As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Anything grey. Houses, walls, clothes, shoes.

And not a day too soon.

Agree.

D0lphine · 01/07/2022 22:53

Stripy highlights.

Biophilia123 · 01/07/2022 22:54

Could not agree more-fashions are socially constructed, if y'a know what i mea'n-if only we conformed to the masses (although it takes some guts not to)😎

It is a thread like this that can change the notions of what is fashionable-let's conspire!

Scianel · 01/07/2022 22:54

I'm just jumping in as I saw this in Trending. It's been quite an interesting read as the whole fashion thing tends to permanently pass me buy, from my perspective some years there are things in the shops that I like and other years I don't like any of it.
If I like something I tend to just keep wearing it till it eventually wears out. A lot of what is in my wardrobe has been there for years.

And it's certainly not classic or capsule, it's things like hoodies, lurid leggings and skull vests.

Scianel · 01/07/2022 22:57

I should add, I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to look current or fashionable if that's your thing, some people are clearly very passionate about clothes, make-up and accessories and it seems almost like a hobby.

However I don't think that those of us for who wearing current trends isn't a priority should be judged. We have stuff that we like. Or we just don't care. And that's okay.

Scrimupnorth · 01/07/2022 22:58

Good grief - those monstrous fanny feet shoes. At best I’d look like Mr Tumnus in those.

Kerensa70 · 01/07/2022 23:00

onlythreenow · 01/07/2022 23:03

I completely disagree. Why do shoes need to be “supportive”? Healthy feet don’t need support, they have an infrastructure of muscles and bones that works perfectly. For anyone else who likes them, M&S are doing a perfect knock off of the Chloe ones.

As someone who walks everywhere, and is out and about a lot, shoes most definitely do need to be supportive. If I wear the wrong shoes when I go for a long walk I can most certainly feel it in my aching legs. Shoes such as ballet flats are fine if you are walking around an office all day, going for a very short walk, or walking from the car to the shops, but they are useless for walking any distance.

Milesty1 · 01/07/2022 23:06

Denim jackets still ok but not a short fitted one - either a longline oversized one or a different style like a denim biker jacket

Juced · 01/07/2022 23:07

here goes
knee high boots
acrylic nails
I think I’d agree about the shrunken denim jacket, what the fuck we will wear on chilly summer nights I’ve no clue on 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣
jeans tucked in knee high boots
leggings
tunics
lips fillers
thick hd brows
contouring
boob jobs
botox
cardigans (still love long line though)
Long loose curls
heavy makeup (however life is always better with a tan)
anything Pandora or argento

CakeFiend8 · 01/07/2022 23:11

Goodness - that’s almost everything then!!

Just wear what you want. Fashion goes round in circles, and why should you have to be dictated to by other people’s opinions. Wear what looks good for your body shape, height, physique, etc. Wear what you enjoy wearing!

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 01/07/2022 23:15

Knee high boots?

Of course no one’s wearing knee high boots, it’s July and 21 degrees.

Come the winter you’ll all be wearing them again. I know I will, I’ve only just found Fairfax & Favor this year and I bloody love them.

britinnyc · 01/07/2022 23:16

Cardigans are also having a comeback with the whole coastal grandmother trend, cream cashmere cardigan, white jeans, big hat sitting outside drinking a glass of wine overlooking a beach. I’m on board for this one!

Benjispruce4 · 01/07/2022 23:21

Coastal grandmother ??😂

For everyone who said that ballet flats are dated www.vogue.com/article/ballet-flat-comeback-2000s

All hideous!

Footless tights?

Agree but OMG I loved wearing these in the early 2000s with skirts and heels.

Thirtyysomething · 01/07/2022 23:29

I think a lot of this comes down to the person. I’ve seen someone say thin eyebrows but these are actually very much “on trend” at the moment, and also fitted blazers? A well fitted blazer will never look dated. I think just stick with what is classic, suits you, weather appropriate (not a thin jacket or loads of flesh in winter) and you’ll be ok.

but agree with dresses over leggings! Or just leggings in general unless for the gym or running errands

SweetMeadow · 01/07/2022 23:31

Onlythreenow, you might find this video interesting about how shoes are sold and designed to be supportive but they are really just covering up problems with our feet (usually caused by wearing shoes that are too structured and rigid) rather than helping them.

Redshell1976 · 01/07/2022 23:49

I don’t give it any thought, I have an executive level job (not a boast at all!) that takes a lot of energy and a toddler with ten times the energy of the energizer bunny. I just try and make sure I have clean clothes that don't have snot or some other stain on them. I’m probably a fashion disaster. 😂

This is an interesting read. I'm late 60s. My knees look awful now so a dress over leggings or skinny jeans feels better for me (I look hideous in maxi dresses, tried many). I sometimes wear long floaty scarves to 'disguise' my big tum. Ballet flats are comfy - may get new trainers though. Cardis? I have many in different bright colours.

Oh well, afrumpin' I will go 😆

Love it 😍 you do you!!!!!

eglantine7 · 01/07/2022 23:58

I keep getting ballet shoe ads now 😅

ImAvingOops · 02/07/2022 00:03

I was in London recently so spent a lot of time on the tube, people watching. What was noticeable to me is that virtually everyone was wearing trainers - very few women wore heels or even sandals. And women of all ages were wearing the same type of clothes - sumner dresses and trainers mostly, or shortish loose trousers! There's little demarcation now between the different age groups. With the exception of crop tops!
I did see one woman wearing ballet flats, who I did think looked very stylish. She was wearing loose cropped trousers and a light loose blazer. She was also young and thin which are the things that make the difference between looking fashionable and looking frumpy. Because, the clothes were pretty universal.
The one woman I saw who had very obvious fillers in her face did look very dated.
DD dragged me to Urban Outfitters and it looked like they'd brought back all the really tasteless shit from the 90s and added zeros to the price. H&M was full of baggy jeans and crop tops and plastic rings it was horrible but she still spent loads of my money in there.

eglantine7 · 02/07/2022 00:09

In Central London you can always spot the out of towners with their high uncomfortable heels and tight uncomfortable clothes. Very made up hair and faces.
Having said that plenty of Londoners have no taste either!
Someone mentioned furry slides, I have no idea why anyone would wear those!
