As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

This is a list of things that looked dated on me (or make me look older).

ballet flats
longer length cardigans
3/4 length sleeves

TheRussianDoll · 01/07/2022 20:59

Oh dear. My body image is shit. Reading this just makes me want to bin everything. Also, have long hair and love EL Doublewear.

im f*cked, aren’t I?

If you've lived as an adult through the 60s 70s 80s 90s and 2000s, as I have, then some of that fashion has or is going to come around sooner or later. If you take reasonable care of your clothes then they'll still be in your wardrobe and there will be no need to buy more...unless you've put on a ton of weight.
I have a cream trouser suit from the 80s that I could wear tomorrow and no-one would know when it was bought, likewise a 3 piece trouser suit (with waistcoat) which will have its' day. Mary Jane shoes, bowling bags, black raw silk straight-leg Versace trousers, M&S Per Una boot cut jeans when they first appeared and Falmer button fly jeans. A navy pea jacket, original Vans, tan ECCO laced shoes and black patent DMs, some lightly or never worn. All still worn when the time is right.

jewishmum · 01/07/2022 21:11

Oh dear, I live in leggings and tunics, so comfortable.

I'd say that modesty where you don't show your knickers through your clothes is dated.

Islandgirl68 · 01/07/2022 21:17

For me personally wear what suits you. Skinny jeans, waterfall cardigans and ballet pumps suit my 5foot 3 frame. Some time I find people wear what is in fashion not what suits their body Frame. When I got married I was probably an 8/10 slim and petite. We went shopping one day to huge department store (in canada) and tried on so many different styles of levis and most made me look huge and shorter. Another day went to small levis store somewhere else and lady looked at me and said you ate a 526, tried them on and they were really flattering. Wear what suits your body not what is in fashion. I don't follow fashion. Wear what suits and is comfortable.

Fanakerpan · 01/07/2022 21:22

Scarves and heels even?

InChocolateWeTrust · 01/07/2022 21:29

Heels
Heavy makeup
Highlighted hair
A lot of jewellry
Fussy footwest

To be honest where I live, the sort of look my mum would describe as "dressy" is now pretty limited to older women.

Teens wear baggy tracksuits
Basically everyone from 20-50 is either dressed in running gear or quite laid back clothes - simple dresses, casual trousers & tops, pumps.

Ortega888 · 01/07/2022 21:46

I just wear what I want and I usually go for classic clothes as they don’t date too much what looks good on one person can look ridiculous on another. It’s all trial and error as fashion changes all the time but I avoid cardigans as they look awful on me but they look great on a friend.

tillytoodles1 · 01/07/2022 21:51

I live in leggings, t-shirts and a cardi. I also wear trainers. Shoot me now.

Knee high boots with jeans tucked in
Knee length wrap dresses
Overly long, overly tonged wag style hair
Skinny jeans
Heels with jeans

I think you've nailed it. All but one of those were my staple looks. Now I'm 52 and a stone heavier they just don't seem to work anymore (and are really uncomfortable 😣).

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 01/07/2022 21:59

Those awful fluffy slides.

FarFarFarAndAway · 01/07/2022 22:11

I still wear my skinnies because they were more slim than skinny anyway- I never seemed to be able to keep jeans particularly tight, even jeggings, they always bag on me. One good strategy if you still like skinny/slim jeans is to change the colour, I've a lovely pale blue pair, not too tight, and I wear them in the summer, my teenage girls think they look ace, also with Victorian type of boots in winter.

I don't think a lot of the things mentioned on here are really that dated. No-one is going to laugh at me going out of the house in slim jeans as opposed to boyfriend jeans aged 50.

I think the most dated thing is probably footwear, not clothes. I don't wear New Balance trainers as they would look ridiculous on me, but on my girls they look great with midi-dresses.

I rarely think people look very dated these days, though, they may not look the height of fashion, but I don't gasp at people wearing leggings and a rain-jacket, walking the dog, or jeans and a t-shirt, it's just not terribly startlingly awful. I'm trying to think of the last time I saw something very dated- my teens would say the heavy-make up fake look has dated quite a bit now, that's not what they aspire to (they prefer the 'clean' aesthetic), but most women a bit older in the public eye still go for it and Love Island is wall to wall fakery!

I still wear low heels though, chunky boots etc, so what would I know! Bought mostly in the past two years, amazing how you can still get this dated stuff everywhere...

What do you think of as classic clothes?

LostAndLonely2022 · 01/07/2022 22:12

The only thing that's dated (IN MY OPINION) is threads like this.

Wear what makes you comfortable.

Wear what suits your shape
Wear what the hell you want

puts hard hat on

FarFarFarAndAway · 01/07/2022 22:13

The only truly frumpy things I can think of would be tan tights with a mid-length polyester skirt and a perm. Sensible clothes at a certain age. That's it. I saw a very old lady with a blue rinse the other day, although she may have been ultra-fashionable, it was hard to tell!

LoisLane66 · 01/07/2022 22:18

How about a return to leg warmers. I think they were de rigeur circa late 70s.

FootieMama · 01/07/2022 22:19

I thought this kind of thread had gone out of fashion.🙄

woodhill · 01/07/2022 22:23

Footless tights?

Craftycorvid · 01/07/2022 22:26

Clutches one remaining cardigan....,

I think it might have been Oscar Wilde who described fashion as something so unappealing it has to be changed every six months to make it bearable.

CambsAlways · 01/07/2022 22:33

Skinny jeans all the way for me, love em! I’d say things that are out are over the knee dick Whittington boots . Crocs that have never been in vile bloody things! Denim jackets cardigans

BluePassportsAreBollocks · 01/07/2022 22:33

Anything grey. Houses, walls, clothes, shoes.

And not a day too soon.
