As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

On the other hand they are very nice, I don't have any scalloped edge ballet flats and they are only £35.

They are lovely but I wouldnt call them ballet flats but pumps 😃
I lived in the ones Boden did a few years back, more structured than a true ballet flat.

Coffeepot72 · 01/07/2022 19:20

If ballet flats are out, what should I be wearing instead?

Reported.
Racist, uneducated, uncultured or all 3!!

The keffiyeh is not worn by Palestinian terrorists!
It's worn by Palestinians and other parts of the Arab world.

I do apologise. What’s the thing that Yasser Arafat wears round his head? The things that were popular in the bought had that kind of pattern - and that subversive “freedom fighter” kind of look. I hate the feel of anything around my head or neck so I pay no attention to what those things are called, I just file them in my head as “scarves”.

Ubiquitous- most over used word of the thread, actually bored of reading it now

I know. Why is it so annoying?

And I just used it.

“Common” would be a useful word of it wasn’t for that pesky double meaning.

namechanged00 · 01/07/2022 19:23

I just bought a Shacket very versatile

Easilystartled · 01/07/2022 19:28

How do you all know these things!!
I’ve never even heard of Vejas…….or half the other brands mentioned. And I always thought that once something’s for sale in M&S, it’s definitely not fashionable.
My friend always wears long flowery dresses with white trainers and a denim jacket. Even walking the dog. She also has shellac nails and lash extensions. I always thought she was super stylish and felt a right frump next to her. But now, thanks to you all, I’m educated and I understand she’s so last year. I shan’t feel so bad now in my trackie bottoms and jumper.

prinnycessa · 01/07/2022 19:34

I don't think vejas are dated!

AnnieSnap · 01/07/2022 19:37

Heavy makeup
heels
please God the scary thick, alien looking eyebrows.

I think a well styled Other Stories type cardigan (eg a wrap one in the right colour) looks great. Traditional cardigans look a bit dated.

Oh dear lord. Just try to inform yourself.
It's called a keffiyeh and is a traditional Arab head covering. The late Yassir Arafat did indeed wear one, as do millions of others.
I have one that I bought in Israel, often worn and so clearly acceptable there.

Phone case that opens like book!

My teen says I’ll know when I’m an old lady as I’ll get one of these 😆

What are you meant to have instead? I didn't understand this comment. One of the plastic ones without a lid?

Maireas · 01/07/2022 19:41

prinnycessa · 01/07/2022 19:34

No, they're not. Some people think popular means dated. (Or ubiquitous! 🙄)

Coffeepot72 · 01/07/2022 19:41

Well it’s official - I’m out of fashion. Along with practically every other female I know!

britinnyc · 01/07/2022 19:44

It’s easy to change up your look to be more current, you will never get me to give up my denim jacket in summer but I switched the white trainer for a flat sandal and it looks much more up to date. I don’t get why some people here think jackets of all kinds are dated, I think jackets are still very much in style, from a slightly boyfriend blazer to a classic denim jacket to a khaki shacket, these are practical and make you look pulled together and can also give you shape.

also I won’t give up heels, I’m loving a chunky platform or clog sandal this summer, easy to walk in, flattering and work with lots of clothing. My only dilemma left is wha to replace my battered Vejas with. I am not sure what the most up to date trainer look is right now.

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 19:48

Heels are back in though hence the popularity of Mach & Mach & Amina Muaddi. Party shoes will likely be big for December although maybe Dec 23, it takes a while for things to filter through.

I don’t remember new vocabulary so well these days, but the name isn’t central to the point, which that it was a crass, derivative trend with an awkward reference point (the millennials would say it was cultural appropriation) and presumably there are thousands of those scarves languishing in the back of drawers now.

I can guarantee you I’m not alone in thinking of it as “the type of scarf Arafat wears”.

Im really not sure why you’re trying to start an argument purely on the basis that I don’t retain the names of obscure textile articles well. I made it clear didn’t like it as a fashion, so you can’t have thought I was posting it support of it.

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 19:55

or trainers that look like running ones eg Asics

You can wear ballet flats.

Maireas · 01/07/2022 19:56

@HinchcHinchcliffeandMurgatroyd - I'm genuinely not trying to start an argument.
This is obviously an area you are not familiar with, but you will have to concede that labelling any garment, particularly a traditional one, as something a terrorist would wear is somewhat crass.
They're nice scarves, widely available. Fashionable? Not sure. Terrorist apparel? Not necessarily.

eglantine7 · 01/07/2022 19:57

Nooo not ballet pumps 😢 aren't they classics?

ReneBumsWombats · 01/07/2022 20:01

Keffiyehs were definitely a fashion item at one point, often made as a political statement on the Middle East but not always and yes, they are very very dated now.

eglantine7 · 01/07/2022 20:01

I can't stand Vejas and I don't know why. Stan Smiths are just as neat/smart and half the price!

ReneBumsWombats · 01/07/2022 20:02

Obviously they're not dated as traditional Arabic wear!

Yes they are. Vogue and The Times fashion correspondent have declared they are back (not that they ever went away) so some posters on here are a bit out of step with current trends.
