As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

I made my old indoor scarves into rag rugs. Just a suggestion if you like crafting. You can make rags rugs with any fabric made into strips. Sorry to go off topic. A way of recycling dated clothes.

Good idea

Thanks! Unfortunately no yellow option 😞

Or anything other than black. They're lovely but I've got plenty of black ballet flats.

sunglassesonthetable · 01/07/2022 16:46

I loved Kate Middleton wearing a VW dress in the new royal portrait. Waiting for all the knock off versions now. The dresses are too expensive to really be ubiquitous.

Yes, I do like a bit of colour with shoes

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 01/07/2022 16:50

I'm sure there were a fair few women who put their VW dress to the back of the wardrobe with a sigh once Kate Middleton started wearing hers.

shinynewapple22 · 01/07/2022 16:52

There are some clothes that will never be 'dated' as they weren't in fashion in the first place. Today I am wearing walking trousers, a fleece (one intended for walking - no wolves!!) and sketchers. Not fashionable, not stylish, but not dated either .

Is this a serious comment?

Not in real life perhaps but in photos of events. It's basically just one dress.

You know what I hate though? When your clothes turn on you.
Oh I know. So many times I've thought I had my look nailed, that fashion was fleeting but style was forever yada yada yada. And then one day I check the mirror and something looks off.

It fascinates me too though - that moment when, as you say, your clothes turn on you and however hard you try, you can never get the feeling back.

I remember in Little women the lovely descriptions of a ball with Meg feeling out of sorts at her best not being as fashionable as the rich girls

yes, they had to wear their ‘poplins’ because they didn’t have posh frocks, and Jo’s had a (mended) burn on the back so Meg wanted her to keep her back to the room! Think they were at their rich cousins’ house.

That’s the one!
Still have no idea what a poplin would look like. Sounds like a cotton dress which I guess might look dull next to silks but much more on trend in 2022.

another one who loved @LonelyPlanetGirI "when your clothes turn on you". I am so suspicious of being sold something as "classic, timeless, investment pieces". Nothing is timeless

this has recently happened to me with my midi dresses, I have absolutely loved them
Since the first lockdown. I recently bought 6 more and now don’t like any of them anymore or feel at all good in them.

microbius · 01/07/2022 17:20

It is very interesting to read through the thread. I once thought my wardrobe to be complete, only to discover that it is complete with things I can't wear anymore. 50-s style dressed with cropped, 3/4 sleeves tight cardigans, tight-ish cardigans, tight-ish everything really. And I have never even bought any tight clothes! All my clothes just turned on me and started looking tight NOTE I have not gained weight. Just the overall fashion landscape swing to the wide loose silhouettes

I've just ordered Hotter walking sandals. Queen of style😀

Feet are sore these days

Yes same here, ballet flats and Havianas have left me suffering. Birkenstock Arizonas provide better support for me now and do seem to have had a resurgence.
Hotter walking sandals are ugly as hell but dear god they are incredible for when it's too warm for walking boots!
I also love the current trend for chunky sandals because they have lovely thick soles.
Can't bear having painful feet, so I'm glad it's all about trainers and flats.

Floisme · 01/07/2022 17:30

I hear you OompaLoompaa with your six midi dresses. It's like falling out of love. You feel so bad because they were good, decent clothes and everyone said they suited you so well and you thought you were going to be together forever, but the feeling's just gone.

maddy68 · 01/07/2022 17:33

Fake leather look jeggins/jeans

Afrodizzyak · 01/07/2022 17:47

An older woman where I live still dresses in original 1980s outfits. Oversized bomber jackets with studs and long flowy skirts with flat boots. Very Stevie Nicks. She stands out and looks great!

Womenandwomenfirst · 01/07/2022 17:51

I thought that might be me… until you said she looks great… I always remember a funny comment on here when someone observed that rather than looking like a rock chick they realised they resembled Suzi Quattro’s fat nan Grin

Jjones8 · 01/07/2022 17:52

Skinny jeans very much out…

Womenandwomenfirst · 01/07/2022 17:58

Agree that fashion/style always changes a little bit, and there is no such thing as “classic pieces”. As pp said you’d look a right plonker in an 80s power suit, however posh the brand. And I highly doubt whether those “I don’t care about fashion” posters are sporting - what was all the rage a few years ago? - yes, the old tunic dress with the Fly London boots eg.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 01/07/2022 18:00

Monsoon has some poplin summer dresses with “poplin” actually in the item name ATM if anyone wants a look at some nice cotton poplin.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 01/07/2022 18:00

Maireas · 01/07/2022 16:47

On the other hand they are very nice, I don't have any scalloped edge ballet flats and they are only £35.

True.
She isn't fashionaable.
I don't know anyone that wants to wear the same clothes as her.
However, the papers are always going on about what she wore, so there must be a group that like her style.
Who is this group? Age wise?
