What now looks dated

As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Your examples aren't a correct analogy Acording to some posters who are authoritatively posting here, everything I'm wearing today is , "not in style", dated/looks odd/nobody wears it.

You appear to be conflating your dismay at some posters opining that some of your clothing choices are dated with the concept that style and fashion necessarily overlap. The thread isn’t all about you personally.

(I haven’t seen anyone denouncing tweed coats, although I’m surprised that you are wearing one in July!)

By all means wear your ankle length skirts and fitted jackets when you can get back into them. It doesn’t alter the fact that when fashions change, or when they changed in the past, you would not be considered stylish. The Edwardian clothes in 1928 example.

There is no such thing as universally stylish clothes that never date. Even the shape of a plain white T shirt or shirt changes subtly over time. A square, double breasted Armani suit jacket from 1987 wouldn’t have been considered stylish in 2000, for example. So whilst not everybody is required to follow fashion, you cannot deny that it influences what is considered to be stylish.

I completely disagree. Why do shoes need to be “supportive”? Healthy feet don’t need support, they have an infrastructure of muscles and bones that works perfectly. For anyone else who likes them, M&S are doing a perfect knock off of the Chloe ones.

Very flat shoes with no support are incredibly bad for your feet, even if they're healthy. Living in ballet flats about ten years ago gave me plantar fascitis and trust me, you don't want plantar fascitis.

I've just ordered Hotter walking sandals. Queen of style😀

Feet are sore these days

I don't disagree @Iamthewombat, but the one thing I really disagree on is colour.

I totally ignore colours that are "in" if they don't suit me. Camel coats might be all the rage one day, but I will never wear one because the colour makes me look ill and washed out.

I won't wear gold because it looks awful on me, nor will I wear brown or tan footwear and accessories as they don't go with my clothes. I am a jewel winter.

I'm an autumn. 🔥🌌🍂🍁🎃

Lass frequently turns up on S&B threads and reminds us all that she can slag off other people's clothes all she wants (the horrors of trousers, trainers, etc) but the things she likes are Objectively Good and cannot be criticised. Nothing new.

Fact check: true

queenofarles · 01/07/2022 14:02

Here's an example-until I put on too much weight so that they no longer fit I had 2 tailored, slightly tulip shaped ankle length skirts which I wore with very fitted and tailored buttoned up jackets up often with button or low heeled lace up boots. And my hair up it sounds nice but I’m having trouble not thinking of costume drama?

sunglassesonthetable · 01/07/2022 14:04

Yep. A bee in her bonnet or knickers in a twist. Or something like that.

CanYouNotReadTheSign · 01/07/2022 14:08

I'm 5'9, athletic and a size 10, so I LOVE my black leggings, midi dresses and denim/leather jackets! Jeans of any kind look a bit scruffy on me and I have a big head so long hair suits me best. I love the chunky trainers and sandals look but I have size 9 clown feet so I'll stick to my adidas Superstars and Gazelles tvm 😉. I wear minimum makeup to avoid looking like my father in drag 😂I'll be 43 soon, so reliving the 90s and early 2000s fashion is not gonna happen for me.

Steakcutchipswithsteak · 01/07/2022 14:33

I love this thread. It makes me feel like a teenager again. Standing around in the schoolyard slagging off all those other wannabe's that are trying to look cool and trendy while trying to look cool and trendy.

Floisme · 01/07/2022 14:35

I like talking about trends. It's facile and shallow but then so am I.

I've noticed my cropped trousers looking slightly 'off' this summer. Full length looking good again.

DashboardConfessional · 01/07/2022 15:28

These threads always have a load of stuff in them which nobody is wearing. Nobody! Like cold shoulder tops. It's not a thread called "trends I remember that I didn't like".

LonelyPlanetGirI · 01/07/2022 15:36

You know what I hate though? When your clothes turn on you.

I've been wearing maxi dresses with cardigans for years in the summer. 70s lurex cardigans (vintage if possible) over a plain black maxi (my 'look' is a bit 70s vintage with a hint of goth). This year I look ridiculous in them for some reason. Maybe I'm just bored with them, I don't know.

Sadly I can see Vampire's Wife style dresses tipping over into 'dated' anytime soon, if they haven't already, which is a shame as I love the look and that silhouette is another favourite of mine. That's the trouble with things that become so popular they reach saturation point - they become associated with a point in time so date quickly. I'll keep wearing mine though because they're flattering and they suit my aesthetic.

Londonbabyland · 01/07/2022 15:57

Bandanas definitely gone

FortonServices · 01/07/2022 15:58

Thanks @sunglassesonthetable

I will have a look 😀

OhMaria2 · 01/07/2022 15:59

Wow those are so cheap looking too!

Vampire's Wife are ubiquitous I don't know if that makes them dated. They are also instantly recognisable. Eponine and Molly Goddard are also instantly recognisable but not in the same "oh there's another VW dress"

Maireas · 01/07/2022 16:15

Thanks! Unfortunately no yellow option 😞

AnnabelC · 01/07/2022 16:22

I made my old indoor scarves into rag rugs. Just a suggestion if you like crafting. You can make rags rugs with any fabric made into strips. Sorry to go off topic. A way of recycling dated clothes.

lightisnotwhite · 01/07/2022 16:23

Even within a wholly dated style like “Edwardian” there were subsets of what was in.
I remember in Little women the lovely descriptions of a ball with Meg feeling out of sorts at her best not being as fashionable as the rich girls. None of us would have any idea if she looked frumpy/ cool or not I guess.

Personally I wore a pretty on trend dress up to London. I was checking into a decent hotel and wanted to look smart. I was on the station with random groups of young girls and felt v frumpy.
One was in a boiler suit. An actual blokes boiler suit like Slipknot would wear.
One had. One had ugly blokes black trainers, long socks, shorts and vest top.
Another was in clumpy boots with a heel and shorts and off the shoulder top 80’s style. .
They all looked fresh and fab.

The sweaters?

queenofarles · 01/07/2022 16:25

No idea why some take these things too seriously , it’s supposed to be a frivolous thread,
I own many things I wouldn’t even consider wearing anymore including some of the mentioned above like VW dress , Zimmerman floral dresses. It was fun for couple of seasons but now they just feel wrong and dated There is really no other way to describe it, 25 years from now they will probably pop back into fashion,

turquoisebuttons · 01/07/2022 16:27

I had a fairly important meeting at work recently and I wore a pencil skirt, blouse and heels. I thought I looked nice in my bedroom mirror that morning but in the office I felt ridiculous. Like I’d time travelled in from 2009.

Today I wore a long floral dress, flats and a denim jacket like 90% of the women in the office. It may not be the height of fashion but I don’t think that looks dated yet, it is so ubiquitous still.

Iamthewombat · 01/07/2022 16:31

yes, they had to wear their ‘poplins’ because they didn’t have posh frocks, and Jo’s had a (mended) burn on the back so Meg wanted her to keep her back to the room! Think they were at their rich cousins’ house.

Yes, you certainly wouldn't stand out!
That first look does seem dated
