What now looks dated

As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Where can I buy nice sweatshirts from?

Where can I buy nice sweatshirts from?

I have a lovely one from M and S. Bought earlier this year.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 11:34

An excellent post @TheOGCCL. I also aspire to wear what Ialready have with something a little more "on trend" without looking like mutton dressed as lamb.

As I said earlier, where is this "skinnies look dated" coming from? They are still very popular in shops and on women (I'm not in London BTW).

Iamthewombat · 01/07/2022 11:37

For everyone loftily assuring us that style is not the same as fashion, you must accept that there is a considerable overlap, right?

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 11:55

I don't disagree @Iamthewombat, but the one thing I really disagree on is colour.

I totally ignore colours that are "in" if they don't suit me. Camel coats might be all the rage one day, but I will never wear one because the colour makes me look ill and washed out.

I won't wear gold because it looks awful on me, nor will I wear brown or tan footwear and accessories as they don't go with my clothes. I am a jewel winter.

Puffalicious · 01/07/2022 12:10

Well, thank GOD 2 of my pumps are pointed! I can go out without fear of being pointed AT.

I only wear them at work (and I drive, so not much walking) I'm in Birkenstocks/ trainers constantly otherwise- same as the last 30 years or so- for, you know, comfort.

For the PP asking. Today I have on a pale blue breton with paper-bag jeans and Birkenstocks. Don't give a toss if I'm on trend. My hair's good today, which helps.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 12:12

I'm in black cargo pants, white T-shirt and a chunky cropped cardigan in a bright green (and slippers Grin)

Not really. Today I am wearing a 50s style , full skirted, belted shirtwaister dress, low heeled , pointy LKB stilletos , a Hermès "indoor scarf" and a tailored tweed coat

I look like something out of the Julianne Moore film Far from Heaven.

Katiepoes · 01/07/2022 12:13

I seem to be in the middle based on this thread, I have dainty shoes and clumpy boots and sandals, jeans from wide leg sails to super skinny black, no floaty dresses as my boobs make me look like a Laura Ashley sofa but I own both a leather biker and a denim jacket. Zero interest in what teens wear - I wore the 90s stuff in the actual 90s and trust me nobody needs to see my 50 yearold wibbly bits in a crop top or a slip dress 😁

The whole thread though makes me think of this (speaking of 90s icons)

Its an interesting thread, but I'd like to know where people go to form their opinions. I was in London this week. Covered a lot of ground, did a lot of people watching, and almost everybody looked quite ordinary, wearing ordinary clothes. Jeans, mainly skinny, or leggings, with trainers and t shirt or sweatshirt. I saw a lot of middle aged women in flowery dresses and trainers, some with cardigans, some with denim jackets. I saw some young women in denim shorts and t shirts. A few office workers in skirts and heels. No noticeable trends one way or the other.
In my own city its similar, though some young people seem to wear more noticeable clothes, bright cargo pants and cropped tops which seem to have appeared more recently.
The only thing that seems a real trend is converse with lift soles amongst the students. Otherwise people seem to wear anything.

Opinions influenced by social media, fashion bloggers etc rather than what I see out and about - surely the latter will be a mix and therefore ‘average’ and anyone aspiring to be on trend will look to the usual trendy sources.

It's the return of the "indoor scarf" 😂😂😂

Puffalicious · 01/07/2022 12:27

My friend's 3 girls were looking at our old holiday snaps from 1992/3 and are livid we didn't keep our clothes for them. It's all one shouldered vests/ teeny crop tops/ cargos/ boot-leg trousers in a myriad of colours. If only we'd known they'd be desirable once again.

There's a big difference between high street trends and catwalk fashion so I think what's considered 'dated' will differ. The high street at best has a watered down version of catwalk trends, reworked for mass appeal and affordability.

But you’re not wearing a crinoline, are you? Or a farthingale. Or a liberty bodice. Or a felt hat indoors. Or a coif. Because none of those things are fashionable. It’s rather facile to say that style and fashion are entirely unconnected. No doubt you’ll now say, “but if I felt like wearing a crinoline and a coif, I would!”

Here’s an example from the last century. Before and during WW1, most women were wearing ankle length skirts, whalebone corsets and long hair pinned up in elaborate styles. By the end of the 1920s most women looked entirely different. It’s unlikely that anyone still wearing Edwardian style clothes would have been described as ‘stylish’ in 1928.

I notice that some posters are doing that reductive thing where fashion is dismissed as ‘throwaway stuff you buy in Primark’, but you can’t ignore that looks and clothes evolve over time, and that’s what fashion is.

It's funny you say that. I have photos of me in 1973 and I look like any girl out there today - long hair, wide flared jeans, flatforms and a tight top. Only difference were the eyebrows 😬

Your examples aren't a correct analogy Acording to some posters who are authoritatively posting here, everything I'm wearing today is , "not in style", dated/looks odd/nobody wears it.

You stuck around then?

Weird, weird thread. Honestly, who cares?

Me. I find it really interesting.

It overlaps a bit with my job. Fashion in all things is a historical fact. And No You Don't Have To Take Any Notice. Cool.

Fashion is one of the largest creative industries in this in this country. Hell you can do degrees in it. I don't feel I should be slagged for discussing trends because posters can't get over themselves and differentiate and take everything as if it's 'judging' them and their lives.

I'm a learner gardener and if I go on the Gardening threads and say "what are the new trends, What looks dated" I can pick and choose or ignore it completely. But seriously? shoot me for asking or talking about it like on this thread ? It's so tedious.

You won't like it probably @TheLassWiADelicateAir but shirtwaister dresses are a bit of a trend.

sunglassesonthetable · 01/07/2022 13:00

not in style", dated/looks odd/nobody wears it.

seriously ?🙄

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 01/07/2022 13:05

Here’s an example from the last century. Before and during WW1, most women were wearing ankle length skirts, whalebone corsets and long hair pinned up in elaborate styles

Here's an example-until I put on too much weight so that they no longer fit I had 2 tailored, slightly tulip shaped ankle length skirts which I wore with very fitted and tailored buttoned up jackets up often with button or low heeled lace up boots. And my hair up. No whalebone corset but apart from that you could have time travelled me back to pre WWI and I doubt anyone would have thought what I was wearing was odd.

I still have the skirts and jackets. If I lose a ton of weight I'll wear them again.

sunglassesonthetable · 01/07/2022 13:06

You sound very put together and stylish. But you also sound like you want a fight.

Of course not everyone follows fashion! God Alive. And of course people hoe their own path and those people usually look amazing.
What on earth are you getting so riled up about?

Yes, the 90s eyebrows were sooooo thin too. Mine have never really recovered 🙈

Why would it make the slightest difference to me? I don't need to have my clothes choices validated as being "on trend"
