As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Haven't heard of autocorrect going rougue?

Is that meant to be rouge or rogue? 🤔

sunglassesonthetable · 01/07/2022 09:22

Thank you for this @sunglassesonthetable. I have added my comments and realise I am not as dated looking as I thought I was, but I still break a few “fashion rules”. I think fashion is mostly what younger people do, and style is what older people who know what suits them do.

I don't think an of these are "rules" tbh. Just general trends which always ebb and flow in fashion. It is undeniable that fashion changes over time, you only have to look at pictures from 20 years ago to know that.

The whole idea that that there is 'a fashion' that suits every age , style and occasion is wild. Of course a 20 year old will want to wear different things to a 60 year old and vice versa. But style is picking and choosing the best bits that feel good for you and ignoring the rest.

Older people aren't consigned to the fashion dustbin anymore either. They rock all sorts of looks. 60 year olds DO wear trainers now. Actually everyone wears trainers now. My 80 year old mother does. Super practical as well as stylish.

Dresses with trainers – I do this, not white trainers. I'm not a teenager
Striped tops – Yes to this
Ath Leisure wear – what is ATH?
Veja Trainers – don’t own this brand
Layered gold jewellery – gold doesn’t suit me. I wear silver
Denim Jackets – Yes to this
Cardis – Yes to this

I think all the above 👆 are what everyone IS wearing and is totally 'now'. ( Doesn't mean you have to !!! of course ) But ironically because lots and lots of people are wearing it you will get arch - fashion types coming on here saying "it's dated". Another example would be the dress/ denim jacket/ trainer combo that has taken off.

Rouge, pinching is dated

faffadoodledo · 01/07/2022 09:25

I'd be lost without my Bretons. Worn them since 1983, a year before I went to university. I was the only person I knew who wore them. I came from Cornwall and bought originals in a chandlery!
These days I go for a bit more 'womanly' shape by buying from Boden and the like.

Ath Leisure = Athletic Leisure clothes =

stretchy athletic leggings and tops

Kind of "I'm just on my way back from the gym"

Same! And I'm from Cornwall.

Cold , dead hands etc for me.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 09:31

60 year olds DO wear trainers now.

I'm 63 and have never stopped wearing trainers. My 3 year old Nikes are going into holes, but I can't find any as comfortable that aren't Skechers (which are a fail in Style and Beauty Grin)

faffadoodledo · 01/07/2022 09:33

Trend setting hicks, @sunglassesonthetable!!

sunglassesonthetable · 01/07/2022 09:33

what do you mean?

faffadoodledo · 01/07/2022 09:35

I consider myself a hick from the sticks (even more so reading this thread!) but we seem to have been ahead of the fashion curve with Bretons!

sunglassesonthetable · 01/07/2022 09:36

😁

SkeletonFight · 01/07/2022 09:52

Ballet shoes are one of those things I have never liked - bought them - several pairs but were sold again. Not flattering at all and I have good legs or so I am told.

JaceLancs · 01/07/2022 09:57

Maxi dresses
Ballet pumps
Ripped Jeans
Cropped trousers
High Heels

Dammit! pinching costs nowt.

queenofarles · 01/07/2022 10:03

striped tops ,denim jackets

its how you wear them that’s dated, stripy tops worn with red Suede ballet flats and ripped skinnies are very dated. Add a leopard silk scarf and that’s really dated.

What would you wear them with then?

Iamnotanowl · 01/07/2022 10:39
  • anything in Royal Blue.
  • yellow raincoats from Seasalt & Joules
  • White converse
But I’m in Cornwall sitting here in my mid 30s, boyfriend fit jeans and a University sweater.

I love the mini checked skirts vibe and black tights - I hope that look comes back.

the students are all wearing lilac and I swear New Look is selling actual clothes that I bought in 2002!!

woodhill · 01/07/2022 10:49

I've got such awkward feet so I hang on to my shoes and new stuff is expensive and not even leather half the time

I love cardis

I wear stuff to work that may be dated but then have some newer stuff as well

woodhill · 01/07/2022 10:51

Billy Joel - it's still rock and roll to me sums up my feelings😀

woodhill · 01/07/2022 10:53

@Blossomtoes

You often find out later in life about your feet's faux pas😀

TheOGCCL · 01/07/2022 10:53

I think there are parallel trends for different ages which kind of makes sense. You can’t compare apples and pears, so to speak.

So for the teens and twenty somethings, I observe baggy clothing, big sports trainers, cropped tops, a 1990s (1970s) revival - but there’s also a completely different mental approach where the girls put on anything and carry it off, either because they have the figure for it OR because they do it with confidence. Crucially, they are not necessarily aspiring to look ‘nice’ and tidy and slim. They don’t necessarily want to wear a bra. They show off their belly rolls if they have them. They also look very similar to each other and often veer between styles, partly as it’s fun and partly as they are still learning what they like. They don’t (have to) worry about what colours suit. Some people look at younger people and think they look a bit of a mess and why don’t they make the best of themselves (what a waste) but this is the circle of life, the younger ones want to set themselves apart from their mothers.

As a forty something, I don’t have to try to copy (we are not really supposed to) but I can learn from all this and maybe channel something slightly more trend led (in jean shapes for example). For my decade and beyond imo the idea is more about looking fresh and vibrant, stylish rather than bang on trend. I am conditioned to still want to look as best I can, aesthetically. The ladies on TV/social media wear bright colours and nice dresses and maybe baggier casual silhouettes. The way to avoid looking middle aged at this age (even if we are) is not to rush to dress like a twenty something (unless you want to), since it’s quite likely to make you look like a bag lady or someone desperately trying to claw back their own youth. It’s more to avoid middle aged cliches like tunics with leggings, practical rain macs, and anything too neat and matchy matchy or overly formal. We are struggling a bit with twin set style cardigans for example as they are a little too neat and fitted, same with skinny jeans and ballet flats. The daughters of our daughters will probably rediscover them.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 01/07/2022 10:59

Someone mentioned cleavage being very much in vogue with the young 'uns. I've noticed that too. Really baggy jeans, oversized shirt or shacket and then a teeny camisole top with bosoms spilling out.

Overthinker19 · 01/07/2022 11:05

Skinny jeans
Tight / fitted clothing except if tucked in/cropped
overly fitted jackets

Think square toe / pointed ballet flats are still fine

5128gap · 01/07/2022 11:15

Its an interesting thread, but I'd like to know where people go to form their opinions. I was in London this week. Covered a lot of ground, did a lot of people watching, and almost everybody looked quite ordinary, wearing ordinary clothes. Jeans, mainly skinny, or leggings, with trainers and t shirt or sweatshirt. I saw a lot of middle aged women in flowery dresses and trainers, some with cardigans, some with denim jackets. I saw some young women in denim shorts and t shirts. A few office workers in skirts and heels. No noticeable trends one way or the other.
In my own city its similar, though some young people seem to wear more noticeable clothes, bright cargo pants and cropped tops which seem to have appeared more recently.
The only thing that seems a real trend is converse with lift soles amongst the students. Otherwise people seem to wear anything.

queenofarles · 01/07/2022 11:17

What would you wear them with then?
the only stripy things i own are an old Chanel beach bag and a striped over sized jumper 🙊
the whole notion is not to wear a look that was popularised a few years ago. That’s why things look dated. Wearing on trend pieces all at once for a number of consecutive years
