As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Yes! Flared Lindybop dresses with huge pink floral prints. Can't remember when I last saw someone in one of those, or saw them recommended on MN. They always looks a bit too 'fancy dress' to me.

Go to vintage fairs, you will see loads of women in them.

Maireas · 01/07/2022 05:29

Thanks for the link to the Vogue article, @DangerouslyBored . I love most of those shoes, although some I think are more Mary Janes than ballet flats. The yellow Chloe ones are gorgeous and I definitely want the glittery Miu Miu ones! Definitely my style.
The Maison Margielas are the kind I wear to work (only less £££). If you're on your feet all day and aren't allowed to wear trainers you have to find comfy flats.
Not everyone is in an office or the "Corporate World" with high heels under the desk!

Spudlet · 01/07/2022 07:10

Ok, so what is the middle ground between skinny jeans and annoyingly flappy jeans? I can’t be doing with wide leg anything, so unflattering on me… skinnies are awesome because they look alright with wellies in winter - which is an important consideration when you have a dog and a school run across open fields. So is there actually a middle ground for jeans?

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 07:14

Straight leg jeans.

Agree, yeah, wearing a watch is naff now.
As is "the curated ear"

Disagree on watch. The Apple smart watch (other brands are available) is defo "in".

Straight leg jeans.

I always think they look nice on other people, but I have no idea what to do with them - how long are they meant to be, do I roll them up a bit or let them just sit over the top of my probably also very dated shoes, what top to wear with them… I have one pair and I hardly ever wear them because I never feel good in them. 😕

Lovinglife45 · 01/07/2022 07:19

Great thread!

I agree that some styles mentioned on this thread are dated. Knee high boots with a skirt showing knees was fine in late 90's, early 00's but not now.

I have a number of floral midi dresses and notice so do a lot of the school mums. With the rising cost of living, my clothes budget is currently zero so I cannot afford to change up.my look. If I had an allowance, I would add variety and quality to my wardrobe.

faffadoodledo · 01/07/2022 07:22

Thing is, a tea dress is easy to wear in the summer. I have two Jigsaw ones in jersey floral prints, bought three years ago which wash and wash and are SO comfy!

faffadoodledo · 01/07/2022 07:23

I've just started wearing a watch again. It was my Mum's and I think it looks ace. It's oversized and an Omega. And I think it finishes my outfits off.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 01/07/2022 07:28

Teenage girls and young women round here seem to be mostly wearing baggy, high neck ‘boy’ T-shirts tucked into cycling shorts or barrel jeans. I’m not going to be following that fashion at 42.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 07:52

I wear a watch because I CBA to take my phone out every time I want to know what time it is.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 08:05

Most of those flat shoes in the Vogue article are hideous. They are too flat and look unsupportive and uncomfortable. The Chloe ones are OK, but how many people really pay three figure sums for shoes they might only wear for one season?

I roll them up to just above a chunky boot. And Wear with a t shirt tucked in, cropped or waist length jumper.
When I'm not sure i usually Google 'how to wear....' and search for images.
Or if you prefer just stick to skinnies!
I think the point is there is now more styles around to try.

milkysmum · 01/07/2022 08:17

Oh gawd, most of my wardrobe is apparently dated ( I think I knew it needed an overhaul but this thread has just confirmed it!) - I'm a bit confused as to what exactly is in style though at the moment if I'm honest!

I completely disagree. Why do shoes need to be “supportive”? Healthy feet don’t need support, they have an infrastructure of muscles and bones that works perfectly. For anyone else who likes them, M&S are doing a perfect knock off of the Chloe ones.

That's all very well but many many people do not have "healthy feet" , don't have the utopian strong muscles and bone structure. They may have inherent weaknesseslike fallen arches, individual differences that can definitely be made worse by unsupportive footwear. Yes you can improve things with exercises yoga etc but tthat's the perfect world. Ballet pumps are dreadful unless you're under the age of 20 size 4-5 feet and very slender

Because people don't wear shoes only for "one season"?

Because people don't actually care about silly pontificating about "ballet flats/ heels/ watches being sooo dated"?

A lot of my shoes are from Pretty Ballerina which are "3" figure prices (although around £170 to £220, so cheaper than Vogue). I wear them until they get too scruffy and worn out to wear. As I've got quite a lot of shoes no one pair gets heavy, every day wear so many of them are years old. Same with my LK Bennett low heeled courts.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 08:52

Thank you for this @sunglassesonthetable. I have added my comments and realise I am not as dated looking as I thought I was, but I still break a few “fashion rules”. I think fashion is mostly what younger people do, and style is what older people who know what suits them do.

Skinny jeans - straight / possibly wide – I have straight jeans

waisted coats - straight or cocoon or over sized – My parka is straight and so is my wool winter jacket

dainty shoes - most stylish footwear has a bit of heft to the soles now - be it trainers, boots, flats whatever - speaks for itself – I really, really dislike the chunky footwear look. It is for young people. At 63 I would look ridiculous and try too hard. Besides chunky boots/trainers wouldn’t go with any of my clothes

Long tops aka tunic style - shorter , wider cut or tucked in or just tucked in at the front ( French Tuck ) – I don’t own any tunics

Fitted items apart from Ath Leisure wear – don’t really wear tight clothes

Heels - trainers – I wear trainers anyway

Overly 'formal' looking - matching jacket / skirts. , handbag/shoes, Everything is more relaxed. (You can stick trainers with just about everything now ) - speaks for itself – I very rarely wear formal clothes these days. Just for formal work dos and funerals now

Matching earrings and necklace -^ just one or the other – I do own some matching sets , but don’t wear them now. Just waiting for them to come back in^

knee boots over trousers - don't – I never do this anyway

thin black polar neck jumpers - thin wool crew necks – I don’t own any polo necks and wear thin (and thick) crew or V neck jumpers

black trousers with a coloured top as default - try colour blocking – Not sure what this means – all one color?

woolly hat with a fur bobble -wool beanie – I will continue to wear my bobble hat. Beanies don’t suit me nor do they keep my ears warm. It gets cold in winter where I live

face full of matt foundation - glowy look with coverage just where you need it – I agree that less is more, especially at my age

Ripped jeans – unripped – I have never owned ripped jeans

zip up fleece top - save for dog walks – I wear mine for pilates

dainty indoor scarf - very ageing, try a chunky chain – I don’t own any dainty indoor scarves. Chunky jewellery doesn’t suit me

Dresses with trainers – I do this, not white trainers. I'm not a teenager
Striped tops – Yes to this
Ath Leisure wear – what is ATH?
Veja Trainers – don’t own this brand
Layered gold jewellery – gold doesn’t suit me. I wear silver
Denim Jackets – Yes to this
Cardis – Yes to this

The watches are so dated comment is just nonsense. Admittedly some "watches" will be smart watches/ fit- bits" but - they are still "things worn round your wrist to give you information about the time"

Iamthewombat · 01/07/2022 08:54

NoNoNoooo · 30/06/2022 22:52

Sorry I disagree. I think long floaty dresses, denim jackets and trainers is a very flattering, versatile and practical look so I’m really hope it’s here to stay for a while.

What are you disagreeing with? The idea that younger women tend to move on from looks that become popular with older women? Hoping that they won’t isn’t going to get you your desired outcome, I’m afraid!

RampantIvy · 01/07/2022 08:57

Ballet pumps are dreadful unless you're under the age of 20 size 4-5 feet and very slender

DD's podiatrist says that ballet flats are the worst shoes to wear for foot support.

I have awkward feet and, thanks to osteoarthritis in one foot and the start of bunions, buying shoes that are a good fit and comfortable without looking too grannyish is quite a challenge for me.

Going back to make up, what are those of us with very few lower eyelashes left (menopause) supposed to do if eyeliner below the eyes is outdated? It's the only way to get any sort of eye definition.

Feel you pain and my eye brows are immigrating as well.
I get my eye lashes tinted at the local college, this really helped. I don't need mascara now

PearlClutch · 01/07/2022 09:11

Just checking - we are to avoid both looks that are 'ageing' and 'mutton dressed as lamb', yes?

Women, after the age of about 35, best just stay indoors where nobody can see you.
