As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Ballet pumps are definitely not dated. They are on trend this season.

God I can’t stop laughing at the wolf on fleece comment. Totally know what you mean 😆

I was on a weekend away with some friends a few months ago and this bloke came in the pub wearing one. We named him Fleeces With Wolves. There was more than one. Wolf that is, not blokes wearing fleeces with wolves, thankfully.

EllaPaella · 30/06/2022 23:34

Spot on @DangerouslyBored
I always think it's hilarious when posters say that. Most teenagers I see wear a uniform of black leggings and air force ones, not exactly imaginative or interesting.
The most stylish women I know are older and have developed their own unique style with an understanding of what suits them and how to put an outfit together. This is the difference between fashion and style I guess.

EllaPaella · 30/06/2022 23:36

This has inspired me to go and dig out my glittery gold ballet pumps from the attic.

blugray · 30/06/2022 23:36

It’s weird, I’m 24 and can see a massive difference between trends in people like 5 year younger vs 5 years older than me.

So many normal “millennial” things are outdated. Kim K’s look in general is outdated, so think big bums, heavy makeup, overdone hair, obvious filler, tight dresses and stiletto heels during the day etc are not in. Some of my late 20s friends look out of place now as trends are definitely more natural/casual now.

Good grief - the Prada ones featured look like Fitflops with the elasticated backs. But 100 x more expensive obvs.

Christinatheastonishing · 30/06/2022 23:39

I'm 50 so have no hope but have been in central London and Paris in the last couple of weeks and EVERYONE was in either the (usually floral) maxi/denim jacket/trainers combo, or leisure wear.

Anyone saying those looks have had their day is wishful thinking!

The Times had a similar, over-excited article about the return of the ballet flat. The below the line comments were almost universally of the "calm down, dear, they never went away" variety.

I see loads of uni students where I live wearing wolf fleeces. They team them with mom jeans and Deirdre Barlow round plastic glasses. It's definitely a look.

I think quite often what middle aged women (like me!) consider dated actually seems fresh or retro in a good way to younger people. A bit like us wearing 70s trainers and A line skirts in the 90s.

In fact under 20s would consider the sort of things labelled dated on this thread - knee boots, tiny shoulder bags, cardigans, etc - the height of fashion!

AnnaFF · 30/06/2022 23:50

When my three Friends turned up in a denim jacket I thought they looked lovely but was glad I wasn't wearing one. I had a blazer on and love a cardi though.

Easilystartled · 30/06/2022 23:53

I went to a school thing the other day. Speeches then picnic on the grass afterwards. 9 out of 10 mums were wearing floral tea dresses. It was like a uniform! I guess they must be on trend right now. But will be deemed passé next year on a thread like this. Impossible to keep up. That’s why I wear black.

apintortwo · 30/06/2022 23:53

These threads always makes me laugh when people say ‘my teenager wouldn’t be seen dead in such and such’. I have yet to meet a teenager with a style I would love to emulate Grin most of them look like they’ve been in an explosion in H&M

Yes. I think there's a difference betwen 'proper' dated as in ankle warmers, or punk, and styles that youngsters or hipsters wouldn't want to be seen dead in - but still very much on trend for middle aged elegant women (e.g. pumps, slim jeans or statement jewellery)

BonjourCrisette · 30/06/2022 23:56

Sorry, haven't R most of TFT but actually, for those of you who love cardigans, I have found one that I genuinely believe is on trend (also works with wide leg trousers).

I can't find it any more on the H&M website, but it is cropped to waist length, a tiny bit slouchy, boxy but not massive, wide sleeves but not with a narrow cuff. It looks brilliant. I have a similar one from John Lewis but don't like it as much because it has narrow cuffs on the sleeves. The wide sleeves on the H&M one really make it look fresh.

LonelyPlanetGirI · 30/06/2022 23:58

That 50s pin up look that was everywhere for a while looks dated now, unless it's done with meticulous attention to detail by someone who dresses like that all the time, especially if the clothes are original vintage. A Lindy Bop dress with matching bolero and fascinator for a wedding, notsomuch.

apintortwo · 01/07/2022 00:09

Gingham fabric. It used to be everywhere and has now disappeared

EmmaH2022 · 01/07/2022 00:10

The pink dress in the Vogue article is dire.

Londonbabyland · 01/07/2022 00:15

Given where energy prices are going and how eager people are to forego heating I'd say fur is definitely staying, especially if it's a heirloom or a lifetime purchase (coats easily last decades).
@Squiff70 also noticing the success of 'grannified' clothes, perhaps a reflection of ageing population. They seem personal and comforting clothes against the nearly identical jeans and white trainers of the crowds.

Sunsetboulevard22 · 01/07/2022 00:21

I don’t give 2 hoots what’s date and what isn’t. If I want to wear it, I wear it. Clothes are too expensive now to keep buying.

Maybe it's just me who considers the cardi 'grannified'. Maybe many elderly ladies would find the style isn't suited to their tastes OR generation (which is fine!) or maybe there are some die-hard young fashionistas out there who'd find my granny cardi the height of fashion and the answer to all life's fashion problems (probably not but still...).

I'll post a photo of my granny cardi tomorrow (taken in daylight) so you can judge for yourselves. Personally though, I love it and find it very warm, comfy and versatile. Shockingly, I'm in my 30s (but only for another few days). Maybe I'm just getting old.

Squiff70 · 01/07/2022 00:35

Stop the press! No need to wait for tomorrow... I just found it on a Google image search. This is my 'periwinkle' granny cardi!

I love it. It's a picture which has turned up in other articles. I think the model looks very elegant but also very comfortable in her style.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 01/07/2022 00:49

The Vogue model is Adwoa Aboah and her dress is Molly Goddard. I think Ms Aboah, her dress and her ballet pumps look fantastic.

Oh dear. This thread, to me, should be titled "things you like wearing and comprise 90% of your wardrobe"!

Haha me too.

I love tunics with leggings.

Luckily around here everyone wears leggings, and leggings with a tank top is a fairly similar silhouette.

Yes! Flared Lindybop dresses with huge pink floral prints. Can't remember when I last saw someone in one of those, or saw them recommended on MN. They always looks a bit too 'fancy dress' to me.
