As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Holy moly! Reading this... I think I might be old?... I love three-quarters length anything and everything. I love skinny trousers, not exatly jeans, made of a black fabric, like chino's, that skims the skin but not squeezes it. I will continue wearing them regardless of what people say so I must be really old.
I love love love high-heels. Hurt my foot so they're off limits but I will continue to hug mine every now and then, and tell them I miss them dearly and they're still loved and wanted.

Littleguggi · 30/06/2022 22:51

I always dress in what I feel comfortable in not what the trends are, however since hitting my 30's I have discovered things that look dated on me:

Skinny jeans and long boots
Rara skirts or gypsy skirts
Anything low waisted
Being overly coordinated colour wise
Big statement jewellery
Bright coloured or overly patterned clothing which don't suit me
Platform or stupidly high heels
Dresses or tunics with leggings
Wearing a watch

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 30/06/2022 22:51

@RampantIvy It would be helpful and constructive if those with long lists of don’ts could suggest what we could substitute for the outdated items.

I started a thread asking this!

NoNoNoooo · 30/06/2022 22:52

ParrotsAteThemAll · 30/06/2022 11:38

I think this look will last the summer but be very dated by next. I still see a lot of young cool women wearing it but as soon as us ‘oldies’ latch on they stop 😫

Sorry I disagree. I think long floaty dresses, denim jackets and trainers is a very flattering, versatile and practical look so I’m really hope it’s here to stay for a while.

Sparkles8912 · 30/06/2022 22:55

not read the whole thread but a quick skim suggests leggings, maxi dresses, midi dresses and jeans are all out of fashion. Along with flats and heels.

Guessing the birthday suit is in 😆

Gutted about leggings though, I love mine.

ChinBristles · 30/06/2022 22:55

I had a dream last night that it turned out I hadn't donate my white cowboy boots to oxfam after all. I was sad when I woke up and realised they are long gone!

Talking of boots, I think those ubiquitous expensive brown "i have a horse don't you know" knee length pull-on boots should be next to be OUT. (Glad to hear horsey-girls' messy buns are already OUT)

ChinBristles · 30/06/2022 22:58

Agree, yeah, wearing a watch is naff now.
As is "the curated ear"

Dominuse · 30/06/2022 23:00

SecondClassmyass · 30/06/2022 10:51

Hair extensions
matte lips and foundation
chunky watch with lots of bracelets on the same wrist
Fitted blazers
lace
wide waist belts

All of these

done eyebrows
fake tan
huge fake nails

high heels just look ridiculous now as do big push up bras

huge oversize bags

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 30/06/2022 21:31

You are confusing wanting to be stylish with wanting to slavishly follow fashion trends.

Couldn’t agree with you more @TheLassWiADelicateAir - style goes beyond what is fashionable and the current ‘trend’.

Style is very much about knowing what suits you, building a wardrobe around that and updating with a few ‘current’ pieces.

Ballet flats, Breton tops, denim jackets are all staples. As are heels - in my own opinion being just over 5ft but if I’m deemed as dated so be it!

littlepieces · 30/06/2022 23:03

Have seen a few posts mention denim jackets... but I have to disagree... what other style of jacket is wearable in the summer?! (Especially when cardigans are definitely resigned to history for now).

Foldingchair · 30/06/2022 23:04

What do people wear to posh dos, like weddings, if heels are put? How do you wear a slip dress with trainers if you're over 21? Or if you did it the first time round? When you were just boobs on a stick, instead of a curvy woman?

TrashyPanda · 30/06/2022 23:05

so glad to see so many agree that ballet flats are out.
apart from Audrey Hepburn, nobody looks good in them, and they are dreadful for your feet.
i only ever wear comfy footwear, usually in bright colours

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 30/06/2022 23:05

I'd really like to see the end of leggings with short tops.

Sorry, but it's just too much.

Craftycorvid · 30/06/2022 23:06

If I followed this advice, I’d be left with a wardrobe consisting of one pair of jeans, one cardigan and a pair of shoes. I guess that’s the capsule wardrobe sorted, then! 😂. I’m culling my kit for no one. Some things get stowed away if I’m bored or even I can see the look is a bit ubiquitous, but fashion is so fickle, it’ll be back round again before long. And where do some of you live to be talking coats in June?

queenofarles · 30/06/2022 23:06

Style isn't the same as fashion.
true , I still look at pictures of Caroline Bassett Kennedy and still think she’s very chic, and not dated, mind you these pictures were taken in the the late 90s , fashion back then was weirdly into cargo trousers and butterfly crop tops.

Lampzade · 30/06/2022 23:11

I like the way Rosie Huntingdon Whitely dresses. Always elegant but stylish

lightisnotwhite · 30/06/2022 23:11

You never see anyone in heels aside from Kate Middleton and Meghan when they are dressed up and award shows. And actually they look ok.
Chunky watches look bad which is a shame as I’ve just replaced mine. Still they last years so I await them coming back for winter 2025.

Twoanklebiters · 30/06/2022 23:13

shedwithivy · 30/06/2022 14:16

I wish I was less of the sheep... I'll see a couple of cool mums at the school gates and think... ooh, they look nice, maybe I should get one of those, I am not a size 8 so it looks less good on me, and a month later that item is on one of these threads Grin.

So then I think why bother, and stick to my charity shop "working with animals workwear" until I get into work and realise that I look like a younger version of my boss who is fast approaching the hiking trainers, trousers with legs that zip off and fleece with a picture of a wolf on it stage Confused

God I can’t stop laughing at the wolf on fleece comment. Totally know what you mean 😆

LesLavandes · 30/06/2022 23:16

Anything goes 😊

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2022 23:19

No cardigan @Craftycorvid it's forbidden

apintortwo · 30/06/2022 23:21

I get the point, but having worn skinny jeans for years, I now only have long, flowing tops so if I move to wider jeans I have to buy a whole new wardrobe

I agree. I think now slim rather than proper 'skinny' jeans are still on trend for the 30+ (and are more flattering than those bagsy 'mom boyfriend' abominations)😆

DangerouslyBored · 30/06/2022 23:22

These threads always makes me laugh when people say ‘my teenager wouldn’t be seen dead in such and such’. I have yet to meet a teenager with a style I would love to emulate Grin most of them look like they’ve been in an explosion in H&M. Teenagers are not stylish! ‘Fashionable’ in an identikit way but definitely not what I would consider stylish. I really couldn’t give a toss if your teenager thinks my style is dated.

notacooldad · 30/06/2022 23:28

If heels are out, what do people wear as a wedding guest or to the races etc?
I've been wearing block heel sandals. I've got a few pairs but my absolute favourite and most comfortable pair is a lemon coloured open toe sandal from Primark.

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2022 23:28

Just watching the Wimbledon highlights and in the crowd milling about outside people were wearing practically every garment mentioned on this thread. No high heels though.

notnownorma · 30/06/2022 23:29

ExtremelyDedicated · 30/06/2022 09:56

Ballet flats, I know they were supposed to be back but I haven't seen much evidence out and about. I used to think they were a perfect classic staple but they do look dated on the odd occasion you see them now.

VERY bad for the feet, so says my physio.
