What now looks dated

As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Skinnies

Overly thrusty bras in a daytime setting

Overly done hair

Narrow heels especially, and heels in general

Ballet shoes

leggings under tunics. I think you get away with them under a shirt dress in a utility wear sort of way, assuming it’s plain fabrics all round

Jersey

I meant who cares whether it's "on trend".
It's just so silly pontificating about other women's clothes being "dated"

I assume the OP is asking for herself.

It’s not silly if you like fashion, or observing changes in style in an anthropological way

If you don’t, then it’s silly to be on this thread

Ahhhh everyone is saying skinny jeans! Wish I hadn't just ordered some new Joni jeans 🙈
Tbh I hate skinny jeans especially in the summer as my legs swell in the heat, but what jeans do I get now??

Penguinevere · 30/06/2022 22:03

I’ve never been stylish and forget keeping up with trends. But I try. This thread feels like the final death blow to my wardrobe.😅

Are messy buns dated now? There, that’s my contribution. I haven’t seen anyone wearing one for a while so maybe they’re out.

Phone case that opens like book!

True Grin

After two broken screens my granny phone case is a necessity! 😂

I always think 'dewy' looks nothing of the sort, more sort of waxy - like something the undertaker would use. Matt or none is loads better.

Nah, you need to REFLECT light, assuming you are any way over 30, and / or not permanently spot lit.

(A bit of) moisture is more flattering, accompanied by a glow: the I have possibly just walked across a field / had a quickie look

I wish I was less of the sheep... I'll see a couple of cool mums at the school gates and think... ooh, they look nice, maybe I should get one of those, I am not a size 8 so it looks less good on me, and a month later that item is on one of these threads Grin.

So then I think why bother, and stick to my charity shop "working with animals workwear" until I get into work and realise that I look like a younger version of my boss who is fast approaching the hiking trainers, trousers with legs that zip off and fleece with a picture of a wolf on it stage Confused

@shedwithivy who cares, your post made me laugh loads and that’s worth a million of these snidey posts saying people ‘don’t know how to dress’, even if they have managed to dissolve their arse cheek fat and wouldn’t be seen dead in Armani 🙃

Gosh. I always have a "book" 'phone case. Possibly why I've never broken a 'phone. Handy for my travel card, library pass and Senior's card. Hang on.........

Disclaimer: 67, not a grandma, and already sneerily by-passed quite a number of the cited fashion faux pas.Grin

Oh dear. This thread, to me, should be titled "things you like wearing and comprise 90% of your wardrobe"!

Ha ha yes I know , I’m like wow I’m so unfashionable 🤣

Yep - what do people wear instead of leggings or skinny jeans 😱😱😱😱 they're soooooo comfy and can be dressed up/down - wearing a dress with with bare legs is a no no unless I'm going "out out" 😂😂😂

Benjispruce4 · 30/06/2022 22:28

Wide leg trousers or jeans @PurpleNebula84 ?

Wide leg trousers or jeans @PurpleNebula84 ?

But then (certainly with trousers, not so much the jeans) they end up flapping around? I hate flappy trousers - maybe that's why I'm firmly stuck in the looking 'dated' queue, with no chance of moving towards the front anytime soon lol

Oceanus · 30/06/2022 22:34

Hmmm... I don't think it was ever in even though it was only bought a few months ago 😜I have this dress which I bought to wear only at home. It looks like a nightgown your great-grandma would wear made of ugly curtains! I bought it because it's comfy and I can hide my legs if I don't shave and it can double as a tent if/when WW3 starts. Anyways, I've now been seen out in public with it in respectable places even though it's mighty frumpy.

Larmes · 30/06/2022 22:36

Skinny jeans 'dressed with a nice top.'

I find skinny jeans - any jeans - less comfortable than most other things. Every time I tried to wear them I felt dull and as though I'd given up somehow Grin I'm much happier in something I can move around in (I'm a fidgety sitter and move around a lot when I'm working).

onlythreenow · 30/06/2022 22:37

Style isn't the same as fashion.

Yes - this is something a lot of people don't seem to understand.

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2022 15:12

I think the question was what now looks dated. There is no need to add "and laughable" - it is unnecessarily snide.

Style & beauty threads can be helpful & interesting without being derogatory.

Absolutely. I am absolutely no arbiter of style / fashion but enjoy this board . I've always thought it interesting in a light hearted way- but the thought that people take fashion so seriously that they think it acceptable to laugh at someone in outdated clothing makes me uncomfortable. That is really unpleasant and not what I thought this board was all about .

ChinBristles · 30/06/2022 22:41

I'd heard being pale and/or freckly is in again. People are apparently once more having freckles tattooed on.

I'd say:

  • that hand tattoo Cheryl Cole has that everyone copied

  • the tattoo behind the ear everyone has

  • visible hair extensions

  • wearing jewellery on the beach (especially beaded "I'm on my gap year" type stuff)

  • multiple silver clangy bracelets (thank Goodness, as I have misophonia)

  • Pandora/Links of london sweetie bracelet

  • Thumb rings

  • chokers

  • big hoop earrings

  • multiple gold necklaces

  • shumpers (one garment that is a shirt AND a jumper)

  • shacket (flannel shirt which is actually a jacket)

  • gypsy skirts

  • trouser suits unless you are Hillary Clinton (sob!)

  • anything that says "juicy" on it esp worn with Ugg boots

  • jeans, a nice top and high heels

  • nude heels

  • those colour blocking neon bikinis (sob!)

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 30/06/2022 22:41

LoudingVoice · 30/06/2022 09:19

Heels, unless it’s chunky boots with a heel.

Dresses with leggings underneath.

I was at a conference today and saw someone wearing both of those!

ChinBristles · 30/06/2022 22:44

Some of these may be obvious:

  • carrying a small dog in a handbag

  • chunky watches on women

  • overdoing the GHDs

  • belly button piercings

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2022 22:46

anything that says "juicy" on it
saw a teenager wearing a juicy tracksuit the other week - the noughties are back

Oh God do you remember those awful Paul's Boutique items? (No I did NOT wear any!) But I did think they looked tacky and chavvy.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 30/06/2022 22:49

fatlazycow · 30/06/2022 19:45

i only see vejas on 50+ year old women round here, I think they look good

I am 9 years too young for them then!

ChinBristles · 30/06/2022 22:49

Haha, maybe the velour tracksuit will be back then! Britney will be pleased!
Ideally the corset top and and hankerchief top will come back too.

Herani · 30/06/2022 22:50

Skinny jeans are never ‘out’. They’re practical and people will suit different types of jeans, so will wear what looks best on them.

High heels are dated in my view. Post-lockdown I’m loving flatter shoes and trainers. I had a bbq recently and three of the women were wearing what I would have previously regarded as stunning designer heels - I spent the whole evening feeling sorry for them as they gradually became more sore. They seem completely impractical for anything now.
