As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Oh dear. This thread, to me, should be titled "things you like wearing and comprise 90% of your wardrobe"!

I honestly wouldn't worry about it in the slightest.

Dummycrusher · 30/06/2022 21:21

@JaneJeffer I haven't rtft but there was an article about dated mumswear in the sun a few days ago which I guess might have been created from this thread.

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2022 21:24

This was only started today though @Dummycrusher so must be The Star Grin

This is the Style and Beauty forum, where we talk about what is in style.

I think you may have got lost on your way to the Policing Other People's Conversations forum.

No, the thread is "Style and Beauty" not "in style" - if by "in style" you mean "what is the current social media approved fast fashion fad for people who lack the courage, confidence or imagination to wear what they want and create their own style"

NothingSurprisesMeAnymore · 30/06/2022 21:29

If it's about looking (and feeling) comfortable and understated, why are leggings under dresses 'dated'? Just asking; in my 70s, so I'm really not that bothered about fitting in. I stopped wearing heels three years ago, thankfully!

Dummycrusher · 30/06/2022 21:31

@JaneJeffer you're quite right! Maybe The Star was jealous of The Sun and wanted to copy its article 😁

notacooldad · 30/06/2022 13:53

Why is it daft? Trends and fashiins are set by clothing companies to make money, not for our benefit.
Because it is on a page where people like to be stylish. Your comment would have been ok if it was in general chat

You are confusing wanting to be stylish with wanting to slavishly follow fashion trends.

Pamlar · 30/06/2022 21:34

I am having flashbacks of the 90s trend of short jumper over a long white shirt. Often it was sewn together as one garment -it was novel when it first came out but looked naff quite quickly as it lingered as a trend

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 30/06/2022 21:34

I wish people would move on from the Charlton Heston NRA conference 'from my cold dead hands/corpse/arse' quote. Find a new way of expressing that sentiment.

It's dated.

woodhill · 30/06/2022 21:36

fatlazycow · 30/06/2022 20:41

tbh I think we will always look back to a decade ago and think ‘ugh why did we dress like that!’ Until the style comes back round again

Definitely

Mind you I'm not keen on the fashion of 2022

Are you living in a box sums it up

Hyvsvaar · 30/06/2022 21:38

Neverendingdust · 30/06/2022 10:23

Maxi dresses with white trainers and a short denim jacket
Balmain type blazers
Knee high boots
Overly done hair
Over done makeup
Gucci Bicester bags

Went to Chelsea flower show and that was 99% what people between 25 and 60 were wearing patterned maxi/shirt denim jacket plexus trainers…was surprised at how much of a uniform it appeared to be

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 30/06/2022 21:38

Pinkwellies81 · 30/06/2022 14:53

What’s the alternative to ballet flats then? If heels are out what do you wear to the pub / meal

Trainers
Chunky boots
Chunky / flat sandals
Brogues

Trainers are ugly and look ridiculous if you're not actually taking part in sport.

If by "Chunky boots" you mean Doc Martens- as dull, boring and ubiquitous as jeans.

Chunky sandals- plain ugly and I'm not a child

Brogues- possibly the least unatractive of your suggestions.

mamaduckbone · 30/06/2022 21:39

Skinny jeans
Knee length boots
High heels
Fitted / shaped t-shirts

None of these things suited me especially so I'm very grateful. I put on a pair of wide legged black work trousers today that I've had for years and suddenly they look current again. I do find that fashion ebbs and flows from what suits me to what doesn't. I'm far better with the baggier, unstructured look that seems to have come back round again. I can actually go shopping and see things that I want to buy.

Glitteryjelly · 30/06/2022 21:40

@KentishMiss @Purplepeopleeaterz agree completely! I've got stuff from 2010 and before I still like to wear, couldn't care less what people think! 😃i don't really follow what's in and what's not and never really notice what others are wearing.

woodhill · 30/06/2022 21:41

My feet hurt so much these days so comfort rules

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 30/06/2022 21:41

Lunificent · 30/06/2022 15:00

This is on the Style and Beauty section. If we took your comment as the maxim, the entire section would be redundant.

Style isn't the same as fashion. I hate jeans. I don't find any jeans stylish, no matter how fashionable or "on trend" they might be. They are just dull and boring and almost nobody looks stylish in them.

You said a few posts back 'Weird, weird thread. Honestly, who cares?'

Well you seem to care. Look at you now, joining in with all these opinions after your initial indignation.

Well done.

RampantIvy · 30/06/2022 21:44

I'm not a fan of chunky footwear either. I will stick to my converse lookalikes or my flat pumps.

ChristinaXYZ · 30/06/2022 21:45

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 30/06/2022 11:30

with foundation I try to tread a middle ground between matte and dewy. Matte is ageing but dewy can just make people look greasy. I like a glowy skin like finish.

I always think 'dewy' looks nothing of the sort, more sort of waxy - like something the undertaker would use. Matt or none is loads better.

DreamloverTealover · 30/06/2022 21:48

Always find these threads interesting. On the first page a few of my staples have been listed 🤣 Ballet flats. Skechers! Leggings under dresses.

Im fall so leggings under dresses have always made sense to me as well as ballet flats as I don't like heels.

OhMaria2 · 30/06/2022 21:49

I'm gutted I love dresses with leggings!

DreamloverTealover · 30/06/2022 21:49

Tall* not fall.

SettingsO · 30/06/2022 21:54

Some real virtue signalling on this thread Grin

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 30/06/2022 21:55

dainty shoes - most stylish footwear has a bit of heft to the soles now - be it trainers, boots, flats whatever - speaks for itself

I have always loved dainty shoes and it's what I wear. My perfect shoes are Audrey Hepburn ballet flats and the sort of neat, pointy , low- heeled stilletos/ kitten heels she wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's. It's what I always wear and shops like Hobbs and LK and Pretty Ballerina always have them.

I hated platform soles in the 70s and every time they come round.

Footwear with a bit of heft is just plain ugly.

I meant who cares whether it's "on trend".
It's just so silly pontificating about other women's clothes being "dated"
