As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

I’m in my late 30s and thinking I don’t have a clue what’s in fashion. Can anyone please enlighten me as to what’s NOT dated and is in trend?

queenofarles · 30/06/2022 20:15

I was watching a reality show and I swear without looking at the year it was filmed I guessed it was around 2012 /2013and I was right.
It was all ripped denim ,
skinnies and going out tops, crepe blazers, bright coloured patent high heels, and scarves lots of silk scarves and lots of j.crew preppy dresses and statement necklaces 🤢.

How on earth did we think it was ok to go out dressed like that?

I don’t like the chunky sandal style at the moment. I just think they look horrible. And EVERYONE has DM sandals. In a year or 2s time they will dated. Will stick to my flip flop.

These 'chunky' sandals/boots/shoes make my skinny ankles look 10 times worse.

If heels are out, what do people wear as a wedding guest or to the races etc?

I have a lovely pair of Chanel style flat pumps. Got them from M&S!

ThatshallotBaby · 30/06/2022 20:22

I don’t like chunky shoes as I’m self conscious about my size 7 feet.
I wear leather flip flops.

I wish I was less of the sheep... I'll see a couple of cool mums at the school gates and think... ooh, they look nice, maybe I should get one of those, I am not a size 8 so it looks less good on me, and a month later that item is on one of these threads Grin.

So then I think why bother, and stick to my charity shop "working with animals workwear" until I get into work and realise that I look like a younger version of my boss who is fast approaching the hiking trainers, trousers with legs that zip off and fleece with a picture of a wolf on it stage Confused

I love those wolf fleeced zip off trousered women, I think they look great, no fucks given is always cool.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 30/06/2022 20:23

@w10mum3 Sounds like peak brunch times. Def no over 35s there, although I do miss my all day boozing days, it's not really compatible with having a toddler. Now we're mainly hanging out on people's terraces/picnicking in the park/descending on anyone with an apartment that can fit more than one family/drinking Mimosas at 10am before the 20somethings wake up.

Red balloons and storm drains are IN

Dressing your age.

LadyIckenham · 30/06/2022 20:28

@Snailsaresweet Clinique do a mascara designed for lower lashes called tight liner. I use that rather than liner because everything I use as liner smudges and I end up looking like I've lost a boxing fight otherwise!

thenightsky · 30/06/2022 20:30

Am I the only one old enough to remember the MN Wolef threads?

They wear heels. They are only out for day to day, and even then I don't really believe that they are. Loads wear them to work in my workplace and most are pretty fashion conscious.

artisanbread · 30/06/2022 20:32

Someone upthread said that fast fashion is dated and we should all be buying a capsule wardrobe. The trouble is that with fashion, everything dates, some of it quite quickly.

I bought some summer dresses 2 or 3 years ago, mostly knee-length shirt style and then by the following year everyone was in midi dresses. This year it's "midaxi" dresses so last year's midi lengths now look out of style. Trouser style has changed a lot from a couple of years ago. So has t-shirt style. It seems to be either you keep up with current trends and update your wardrobe every year or wear perfectly good quality stuff which makes you look dated.

Maireas · 30/06/2022 18:10

Do people wear dresses over jeans, still? I haven't seen that for years. I remember Trinny and Susannah promoting that in about 2002!
I also haven't seen Uggs for years - there was a time they were ubiquitous.
I remember the Headteacher where I worked banning them for staff and students!

Y2K is massively in now, so they might be due a come back! 😂

I have absolutely no idea what the fashions or styles of circa 2012 were. In fact apart from the horrible selfie looks (over thick eyebrows, over thick false eyelashes and trout pouts) I have no idea what the fashions have been for the whole of the 2000s. I seemed to have lost my fashion eye at the turn of the 90s.

Periwinkle blue is a gorgeous colour Squiff70. May saunter round Peacocks.....

I bought a beautiful, slightly deeper than periwinkle one from Fat Face last year and wearing it with pale blue wide leg trousers.

Nope

tbh I think we will always look back to a decade ago and think ‘ugh why did we dress like that!’ Until the style comes back round again

This is nonsense. Botox and lip filler are a huge and still growing trend. Maybe noticable lip filler isn't a good look (I don't think it is) but these procedures in general are more popular than ever before. Fake tan is also one of THE most popular beauty items available, and is fine if used well. I wear fake tan because my legs are translucent white without it and it makes me feel better. If you mean dark orange fake tan then yeah, not a good look, but tanned skin is not 'out' (how could any skin colour be 'out' without delving in to racist territory) and therefore fake tan isn't either.

Gym wear/tracksuits are everywhere too, including all over fashion blogs! Fancy tracksuits to wear with loafers and a cashmere jumper are everywhere on What/How/Wear etc.

Bright coloured hair has always been a micro-trend rather than mainstream and we should be celebrating these small eccentricities and deviation from exact copycat hairstyles, surely? How can self expression be 'out'? And no, this didn't touch a nerve, my hair is dark blonde.

Burberry and Armani are hugely successful British brands. The idea that you wouldn't buy anything from a brand simply because it's 'out' is mad, whether that brand is a designer one or a market stall.

This whole post seems mad, and the statement that people don't know 'how to dress' suggests there's a correct way, which surely contradicts the entire idea of fashion as self expression and suggests fashion exists purely to prove the ability to conform and consume correctly, like obedient little robots. Surely that's not something to be glad of?

I'm very in to clothes and, although I am obviously swayed by the zeitgeist, I much prefer to focus on what I love and what suits me than following the rollercoaster of what is 'in' and 'out'- and anyway, these lists always depend on who you ask!

I'm Asian, so don't call me racist because I think fake tans are dated.

Not only are they dated they are laughable.

Natural brown skin is beautiful - Fake tan is dated, never was in fashion, doesn't suit the person and doesn't compare to the real skin tones.

Just because something is a big brand doesn't make it fashionable or on trend.
Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss - Gross.

RestingMurderousFace · 30/06/2022 20:51

(how could any skin colour be 'out' without delving in to racist territory) and therefore fake tan isn't either.

Well arguably pale skin is 'out', which is why you, me and millions of others feel compelled to get their tans out of a can. It would be nice is pale complexions could be embraced one day.

onlythreenow · 30/06/2022 21:06

Dated and laughable

I would rather be dated than someone who laughs at what others wear.

Most people just don't know how to dress.

Mainly those who slavishly follow fashion, whether it suits them or not!

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2022 21:09

Has the article been published yet anyone know?

I was just thinking cardigans are in, pastel, soft, but chunky striped and patterns.

Maybe it's just where I am !

The comments about cardigans and ballet flats are just weird. They are both so ubiquitous and staple it's a bit like saying clothes are dated.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 30/06/2022 21:17

daisyjgrey · 30/06/2022 11:43

You can prise my cardigans out of my cold dead hands.

And my ballet flats off my cold, dead feet and my Hermès scarf from round my cold dead neck.

Weird, weird thread. Honestly, who cares?
