As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Boris Johnson and the Conservative party are looking very very dated if you ask me.

I wish I was less of the sheep... I'll see a couple of cool mums at the school gates and think... ooh, they look nice, maybe I should get one of those, I am not a size 8 so it looks less good on me, and a month later that item is on one of these threads Grin.

So then I think why bother, and stick to my charity shop "working with animals workwear" until I get into work and realise that I look like a younger version of my boss who is fast approaching the hiking trainers, trousers with legs that zip off and fleece with a picture of a wolf on it stage Confused

Thank you for this - it made me properly LOL 😅

Leggings or tights with shorts, it was never a look but I’ve still a friend who loves it 😂

I wore this look in the late 80s, early 90s and my 13yo does it now. We have the same hourglass shape. My older teen is all about her black skinnies and baggy shirts.

I hate responses like these.

It’s a fashion thread. In a fashion forum. It’s a lighthearted chat. Maybe a few fashion “tips”
get swapped, or new ideas on how to style something that’s been living in the back of your wardrobe.

Politics does not need to be mentioned. It isn’t relevant and your post isn’t even funny, it’s so try-hard. Not every single topic on this website needs to be brought back to Boris fucking Johnson.

Maireas · 30/06/2022 18:32

@puffalo thank you
Bloomin irritating 😡

ThatshallotBaby · 30/06/2022 18:33

I think stars on everything is a bit over now. And lightening and rainbows.
Saying that I have a grey t shirt with gold stars that I wear quite a lot Grin
I am middle aged though

IsThePopeCatholic · 30/06/2022 18:34

Ugg boots
tiered flowery dresses
skinny jeans
tunics
high heels

CruCru · 30/06/2022 18:42

Primatrying · 30/06/2022 12:11

Oh dear. This thread, to me, should be titled "things you like wearing and comprise 90% of your wardrobe"!

And me! I am middle aged though. Perhaps it doesn’t matter.

If I’m going to make a list, I would include:

beards
tattoos on show
heavy make up (to the point where you wonder what someone actually looks like)
lip filler
veneers

sunglassesonthetable · 30/06/2022 18:43

@RampantIvy Done my best here. Just some thoughts.

Def Dated

Skinny jeans - straight / possibly wide

waisted coats - straight or cocoon or over sized

dainty shoes - most stylish footwear has a bit of heft to the soles now - be it trainers, boots, flats whatever - speaks for itself

Long tops aka tunic style - shorter , wider cut or tucked in or just tucked in at the front ( French Tuck )

Fitted items apart from Ath Leisure wear -

Heels - trainers

Overly 'formal' looking - matching jacket / skirts. , handbag/shoes, Everything is more relaxed. (You can stick trainers with just about everything now ) - speaks for itself

Matching earrings and necklace -^^ just one or the other

knee boots over trousers - don't

thin black polar neck jumpers - thin wool crew necks

black trousers with a coloured top as default - try colour blocking

woolly hat with a fur bobble -wool beanie

face full of matt foundation - glowy look with coverage just where you need it

Ripped jeans - unripped

zip up fleece top - save for dog walks

dainty indoor scarf - very ageing, try a chunky chain

Still Going Strong ( so aka 'over' to some people) - fill your boots*
*
Dresses with trainers
Striped tops
Ath Leisure wear
Veja Trainers
Layered gold jewellery
Denim Jackets
Cardis

Babyroobs · 30/06/2022 18:49

I'm not going to stop wearing leggings and tunic tops, something has to cover my huge bum.

weeducky · 30/06/2022 18:52

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 30/06/2022 13:41

Dated and laughable ...
Botox
Lip fillers
Face caked with make up
Fake slug eyebrows
Fake tan
Tracksuits when not in the gym
Leisurewear outside the house
Block colour hair dye
Dark hair dye on older people
Coloured hair - pink etc
Clothes that don't fit properly
Body con dresses
High heels / shoes shoes
Ballet pumps rounded at the front / pointy ok
Burberry
Armani
Matching handbag and shoes
Leggings
Long dresses with thick tights or leggings
Long hair if it is limp
Short hair with no style

Most people just don't know how to dress.

This is nonsense. Botox and lip filler are a huge and still growing trend. Maybe noticable lip filler isn't a good look (I don't think it is) but these procedures in general are more popular than ever before. Fake tan is also one of THE most popular beauty items available, and is fine if used well. I wear fake tan because my legs are translucent white without it and it makes me feel better. If you mean dark orange fake tan then yeah, not a good look, but tanned skin is not 'out' (how could any skin colour be 'out' without delving in to racist territory) and therefore fake tan isn't either.

Gym wear/tracksuits are everywhere too, including all over fashion blogs! Fancy tracksuits to wear with loafers and a cashmere jumper are everywhere on What/How/Wear etc.

Bright coloured hair has always been a micro-trend rather than mainstream and we should be celebrating these small eccentricities and deviation from exact copycat hairstyles, surely? How can self expression be 'out'? And no, this didn't touch a nerve, my hair is dark blonde.

Burberry and Armani are hugely successful British brands. The idea that you wouldn't buy anything from a brand simply because it's 'out' is mad, whether that brand is a designer one or a market stall.

This whole post seems mad, and the statement that people don't know 'how to dress' suggests there's a correct way, which surely contradicts the entire idea of fashion as self expression and suggests fashion exists purely to prove the ability to conform and consume correctly, like obedient little robots. Surely that's not something to be glad of?

I'm very in to clothes and, although I am obviously swayed by the zeitgeist, I much prefer to focus on what I love and what suits me than following the rollercoaster of what is 'in' and 'out'- and anyway, these lists always depend on who you ask!

noormiss · 30/06/2022 18:53

astoundedgoat · 30/06/2022 10:56

Eyeliner on lower lid - gone.

Agree that the cropped cardigan is still fine so long as it is pastel and chunky but also slouchy (see: lilac cardigan from Rouje), especially with wide legged jeans or cottagecore florals.

Oddly with cleavage on show - dated on adult/older women, yes, but all the rage with teens and under 25’s, weirdly. I live in a university town and both the “basic” teens and, unusually, the edgy undergrads are showing a LOT of boob this summer - way more than before. No leg though. Makes me quite nostalgic for my pre-breastfeeding shape!

I hope those youngsters are slathering spf on their cleavage - exposed cleavage at 18 - 25 = red, blotchy, crinkley cleavage at 40 +

Stevie6 · 30/06/2022 19:12

I'm guilty of a lot of these, but also I'm in my 40s so judging what's "in" for me shouldn't be done by looking at what teenagers are wearing - I don't want to look like my DDIL

Birkenstock’s are awful!

Birkenstock’s are awful!

They're not unfashionable though, are they?

FortonServices · 30/06/2022 19:22

@weeducky

You responded to a Seasalt acolyte. Seasalt make perfectly functional clothes but aren't known for being on trend.

TammyOne · 30/06/2022 19:27

So, really, whenever I read these type of threads, what I gather is that anything that older women wear is dated, or anything that makes women look old also makes them look dated?
Hmm. There are styles that used to look fresh that now look a bit tired, like the tea dress/neat cardi combo (I always think of this as a "Chick Lit" look for some reason) but generally, I don't see why young women and older women should ever follow the same fashion "rules" as one another?
I mean, this whole thing about heels being dated. I often wear heels to work; not high teetering one, more like chunky 1940s type ones, or 70s slouch boots with stack heels, and the young women I work with always compliment them and say they could never walk in such shoes. I know they wouldn't wear them, but I CAN walk in them. What is more, I like feeling like a proper grown up lady sometimes, I like that I can look men right in the eye and I feel tall and badass😁
Some things are not FOR youngsters, but it doesn't mean older women can't rock them. I sometimes wonder if older women than me get annoyed at all the young girls dying their hair lilac grey. The cheek of the youth stealing their hairstyle!
When I am 70 I fully expect to be wearing a fur trimmed poncho and diamonds, and that is not a look for the young at all...

LOL, I was just thinking the same!

Frumps Unite!

fatlazycow · 30/06/2022 19:34

i thought cardigans had been ‘out’ for the past few years but were now making a comeback

i notice a lot more teens and younger people wearing them, chunky retro ones but also delicate ones with a little tie at the top rather than bittons

ABBAsnumberonefan · 30/06/2022 19:39

Shackets and “leather” jackets now instead of denim / cardis

Justgorgeous · 30/06/2022 19:40

Kate Middleton still wears her Vejas so don’t think they are dated at all. Lots of women and men wear them.

Badlifeday · 30/06/2022 19:42

@TammyOne spot on

velvetvixen · 30/06/2022 19:43

I feel that I and all other skinny jean, floaty scarf, tunic and leggings wearing outdated style rebels should term ourselves Frumpinistas and claim it as a trend.

So there.

velvetvixen · 30/06/2022 19:45

I was considering Cardiganistas but sounds clunky.
