What now looks dated

As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Agree. @MurderAtTheBeautyPageant It's not making me tetchy and I'm wearing skinny jeans.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/06/2022 17:40

Pleased to say I’m too old to care! I wear what I like, what’s comfortable and suits me. ‘Fashionable’ can just do one - unless I happen to like it.

midsomermurderess · 30/06/2022 17:40

I think because this is trending, more people are turning up to say basically they don’t care about fashion, trends etc (don’t give a shiny shit, all the usual stuff). All well and good. Missing, entirely missing, the point from a ‘style and beauty’ board point of view though.

midsomermurderess · 30/06/2022 17:45

And some of the earnestness you see on Style and Beauty now, Christ alive. It’s as if some women think the rest of us aren’t actually allowed to like fashion, take an interest in trends etc. No, not us, we primarily must fret about the industry, what other women might be going through if they are wearing clothes from several seasons ad nauseam. Maybe we can do both, in the relevant context. There’s a thought.

I'm wearing a cardigan and a side parting and I'm feeling untetchy!

Minnieboat · 30/06/2022 17:46

I am no fashionista but would think twice about a dress and leggings combo.

I think colours are in and boring dark workwear, as a for instance, can look dated.

I think being slim and fit (I am neither at the moment) can make wearing clothes so much easier as you feel like more of a blank canvas and less self-conscious.

MrsRinaDecker · 30/06/2022 17:51

I think denim jackets are ok! For all ages.. I’ve seen them from students in their teens and twenties up to my mum in her seventies and everything in between. I bought one just last week in primark, slightly boxy style, but all the high street shops had them.
I’d say there’s less tight fitting now, lots of looser styles, which I’m really liking. Bodycon would be dated I think, or those little skinny belts to nip your waist in.
I love leggings and tunics for comfort, but I’d have to agree they’re not very “now”.

BruceWaynettaSlob · 30/06/2022 17:52

I used to live in skinny jeans in my teens. Now they look frumpy.

Ah yes, it's top of trending topics. That's bound to invite the indignant.

Fifi0102 · 30/06/2022 17:55

I wear practically everything on this list 🤣🤣🤣

Fifi0102 · 30/06/2022 17:57

If you have awful legs how do you get away without wearing leggings and a dress? I hate showing my legs but I like wearing dresses. I think I'm going to have to wear cycling shorts to cover my wobbly thighs.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/06/2022 17:59

"Denim skirts (shorts seem to be everywhere though)."

I've seen a lot of denim skirts in the shops recently...

I think ballet flats are a staple - they still look good, especially if expensive!
but I agree on knee high boots, little cardigans and high heels

I buy all Primark ballet flats. £4 a pair and have red, mustard, blue, black, white.
I love them.
They don’t last but at £4. I don’t mind.

Thick denier tights. Same look, but not leggings.

People telling you certain clothes are dated just because they can’t get away with wearing them😴

cottagegardenflower · 30/06/2022 18:04

Handkerchief hems
Waterfall cardigans
Floaty chiffon scarves
Ugg boots

This clearly isn’t the case.

faffadoodledo · 30/06/2022 18:07

I fear denim jackets (particularly over dresses) may now look dated. Which is a shame because I find it a very useful summer look!

Zazdar · 30/06/2022 18:08

People telling you certain clothes are dated just because they can’t get away with wearing them

I came on to say that anything I don’t like looks “dated”.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/06/2022 18:08

TheMullerLightOwl · 30/06/2022 12:43

Very tight outfits - e.g. skinny jeans and tight crop top. Either wear the skinny jeans with an oversized shirt or wear the crop top with wide leg jeans.

I get the point, but having worn skinny jeans for years, I now only have long, flowing tops so if I move to wider jeans I have to buy a whole new wardrobe.

Maireas · 30/06/2022 18:10

Do people wear dresses over jeans, still? I haven't seen that for years. I remember Trinny and Susannah promoting that in about 2002!
I also haven't seen Uggs for years - there was a time they were ubiquitous.
I remember the Headteacher where I worked banning them for staff and students!

Lampzade · 30/06/2022 18:10

I am a bit of a fashionista. I love clothes and fashion. I don’t have many clothes , but I have a few staple pieces
I wear a few of the things that are on the ‘dated’ list. It is not what you wear, it is about how you wear it
My sister gave me a denim jacket that she didn’t like anymore. I wore the jacket two weeks later when we went out to dinner and dsis decided that she wanted the denim jacket back
I love leggings , but I like to wear leggings that sit half way down my calves.
I have several maxi cardigans which can be more comfortable than coats or jackets.
I love straight cut rather than skinny jeans, but if skinny jeans suit you then wear them.
l wear maxi dresses in Summer but they are fitted and in one colour. I don’t like the flowery floaty numbers because they make me look enormous.
In hot weather, I wear cotton maxi shirts with cropped fitted linen/ cotton trousers.
I like palazzo trousers but they don’t suit me
I stick to plain colours
I wear what suits me. I don’t give a stuff about what others regard as dated

Blankscreen · 30/06/2022 18:11

I think boxy loose denim jackets are ok but right fitting one look dated now.

BruceWaynettaSlob · 30/06/2022 18:13

AnnaFF · 30/06/2022 15:20

Were yelloe raincoats a thing. I must have missed that one. The little boy in IT?

That little boy was a style icon

RampantIvy · 30/06/2022 18:18

I still wear delicate jewellery, cardigan, skinny jeans, midi dresses with a denim jacket, Skechers, fitted blazers and ballet flats. I see a lot of people wearing these where I live

My phone case that opens like a book means that I don’t have to carry a purse because I can put my debit card, railcard and driving licence in the pockets.

I’m currently wearing this cardigan over a black vest top with black skinny jeans – so shoot me Grin

I’m baffled by the “skinny jeans are dated” comments because the shops are still full of them and I still see plenty of people wearing them.

I like the idea of trainers with a dress, but resisted buying white ones because I didn’t want to look like a sheep, so I have some grey converse lookalikes instead (and they go with everything)

It would be helpful and constructive if those with long lists of don’ts could suggest what we could substitute for the outdated items.
