As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

@Nothappyatwork

tbh I'd call that a little shacket🫣

So much of what is mentioned here is in my wardrobe mainly because I cannot afford to update it. I can't even afford to splash out on a new pair of socks at the moment. So all I live in are skinny jeans, basic tops and cardigans with pumps. My sister very kindly bought myself and DH tickets to a concert in London tomorrow and I just don't know what the hell I'm going to wear, I feel so embarrassed of my clothes, I'd burn them all if I could replace them.

This sounds fine, I’m 29 and wore a basic t shirt with skinny jeans to a concert a few weeks back. Everyone was just in casual and comfy clothes to enjoy the music. still plenty of skinny jeans about. Have fun!

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 30/06/2022 17:19

Ha ha I’m currently wearing a dress with black leggings and ballet flats 😂.

In my defence all my black tights have disappeared and so have my work trousers so this was the only acceptable thing to wear.

You can prise my cardigans out of my cold dead hands.

Same. They'll never take me alive. 🔫🔫🔫

Stylishkidintheriot · 30/06/2022 17:20

You can take the leggings under skirts / dresses/ tunics away from my cold dead hands!

Merlo · 30/06/2022 17:20

Ah shit, this is just like reading through my style diary for a week…….

Discwriter · 30/06/2022 17:21

I used to love a dainty dress over black leggings, a decorative scarf arranged artistically with ballet flats. With or without a cardigan. Also thick belts. No idea what my look is now though, it's slowly solidifying into hoodies and elasticated trousers.

Maireas · 30/06/2022 17:23

I think there's a bit of confusion over "dated", "frumpy" (😕) and what's not to your personal taste.
Pandora bracelets, delicate earrings, tan ankle boots and denim jackets are probably more in the latter

Maireas · 30/06/2022 17:24

Sorry! Pressed too soon
.. category, bodycon dresses in the first category and knee length wrap dresses in the second.
Although it's very subjective.

Solidarity @Stylishkidintheriot - ditto.

balalake · 30/06/2022 17:26

I am hoping that high heels are going that way.

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/06/2022 17:27

LoudingVoice · 30/06/2022 09:19

Heels, unless it’s chunky boots with a heel.

Dresses with leggings underneath.

I WEAR DRESSES WITH LEGGINGS!!! 😠

But yes . . . . I'm very, very dated . . .

georgarina · 30/06/2022 17:28

Ombre hair
Thinking Botox is only for botched/TOWIE types - most people now get it subtly and you wouldn't be able to tell

Gensola · 30/06/2022 17:29

I teach 18-25 year olds (undergraduates) and they all look like extras from Friends! Baggy t shirts, sweat shirts, those camel jackets with the exposed sheepskin lines on, DMs… dungarees. Stone wash jeans. Coloured jeans. Lots of Lucy &Yak.

Onlyaprawninwhitby · 30/06/2022 17:29

You are all describing everything I wear! Cardigans, ballet pumps and leggings under a dress are my favourites for work as a nursery teacher.

WitchWithoutChips · 30/06/2022 17:30

Cardigans need to be longer and looser now, I find. Sort of a slouchy grandad style, ideally with pockets.

Yes, the 90s are very back. Walking past the sixth-form college today I saw floppy 'Blossom' hats, t-shirts under slip dresses, and a vintage Planet Hollywood sweatshirt.

Maireas · 30/06/2022 17:34

Most of the girls I teach have those ginormous false eyelashes. Some are seriously long! I have very dated natural lashes ☺️

clarepetal · 30/06/2022 17:35

I wear loads of the stuff that has come up on this list.

I couldn't give two shits if people think I'm dated. I wear what I like.

tulips27 · 30/06/2022 10:17

Those big floral prints (I think they're mostly smaller these days)

Is the word you're looking for Ditsy? Its my favourite pattern - I can't stand massive floral designs, they swamp me (even though I'm 5ft 6);but I love a nice bit of ditsy 😊

Im surprised people think cardis are frumpy. Ive got quite a few aka I live in them - and I'm always told I wear them well, including a scarf in complementary colours. I expect people will say scarves are frumpy.

maybe I'm completely clueless about what's frumpy and what's in, but in the interests of the environment and my wallet, I'm not swapping out my wardrobe for anything, I love my clothes!

Thank you - that was what I was struggling to say - I don't give a shiny shit Grin

This is an interesting read. I'm late 60s. My knees look awful now so a dress over leggings or skinny jeans feels better for me (I look hideous in maxi dresses, tried many). I sometimes wear long floaty scarves to 'disguise' my big tum. Ballet flats are comfy - may get new trainers though. Cardis? I have many in different bright colours.

Oh well, afrumpin' I will go 😆

Wait for me!

I'll come with you - this is my look, too (I'm 69).

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 30/06/2022 17:37

I'm sure most of us wear at least three things that have been mentioned so far.

Not sure why people get so tetchy about these threads.

Blueberrybuns · 30/06/2022 17:39
