I have been watching quietly for some time, loving this thread and all things fragrance related.
SOTD 4160 Orange Tree, which I really liked until my DS said it reminded him of the scented towels at the end of a meal in an Indian restaurant. I know what he means, citrus and spicy.

Welcome!
I do see what your son means re: the orange tree 🌳 🙂
Sote kayali vanilla

SOTD Byredo Gypsy Water. I bought a replacement bottle of this earlier in the month.

DP is travelling with work a lot at the moment but I have no idea what you can get duty free?

FestivelyScent · 25/05/2022 23:24

Aha! You've hit on what was bothering me in the AKBTF @ChiswickFlo - the cinnamon. It smelled almost oud-y to my nose. Normally I love cinnamon, but this was too close to a sort of skanky oud for me.

SOTD was Shazam - this is true love for me too! A true old fashioned spicy oriental - how often can you say that! Definitely full bottle worthy.

SOTE was Tarts Knicker Drawer. It smelled delicately nuanced on the mouillette, but on me was really one dimensional and flat. Such a shame, as I know from sniffing the paper that this is a beautiful powdery thing, on a lovely incense-y and warm base. Almost definitely a skin chemistry thing.

SOTN is Angel's Share.

FestivelyScent · 25/05/2022 23:29

Welcome to the thread @Kat135 👋😊

Do you know, I don't think I've heard of Jardin Retrouve. But their sample set looks very generous - 3 ml bottles! Will be trying them at some point in the very near future too. 😊

Oh, I'm SO pleased you love Shazam! ❤️

We seem to like the same sort of fragrances 😍

Well...I've ordered the le jardin retrouve discovery set. And I'm not even sorry 😬🤣🤣

Their porcelain stem diffusers look so beautiful 😍 they may have to go on my want list!

Not sure re sotd yet. I've been awake since 5am ☹️ and the weather is SO weird here atm I spray my choice at 8am then by 10am it feels totally wrong! 🙃

Do any of you have a "failsafe" scent no matter what the weather/event/season?

I guess 4160tuesdays SSOTPE is one of mine. Avon lbd is also pretty good for any day.

So many of my perfume loves are autumn/winter/oriental/spicy that I do struggle a bit in summer....

SOTD is the PP version of JM Orange Blossom. Very soapy, not sure about this one at all. I haven't had a great hit rate with PP so far, though the By the Fireplace is very close to the original and I really love their version of Angels' Share (which is just as well, as I am never going to be paying out the crazy price for the original).

I'm still looking for my failsafe perfume, hence all the discovery sets that I keep ordering! I've now got one on the way from Estee Lauder, the luxury collection one. They've all got quite silly names like Paradise Moon, Dream Dusk and Blushing Sands but there was a review of all eight of them on Fragrantica that said there were some really good scents in there, so fingers crossed.

I'm also eyeing up the discovery set from L'Artisan Parfumeur, as I've never tried anything from there. They do a set with Mure et Musc, Passage d'Enfer, Histoire d'Orangers, La Chasse aux Papillons, Un Air de Bretagne and Fou d'Asbinthe. Has anyone tried any of these?

ChiswickFlo · 26/05/2022 11:01

Hello all , I've received my 2ml sample of ROSA de RIO – Eau de Parfum but very sadly I can barely detect it on myself .
If anyone would like me to onewardly transmit it to them ( no charge! ) drop me a PM and I'll pop it in the post .

Oh, that's disappointing 😞
I'm not a rose fan (unless its properly skanky) and I particularly dislike "watery" rose - or watery anything for that matter...

@ChiswickFlo I was only thinking the other night that generally when you recommend something, in more instances than not I do really seem to like it. 😊

I don't think I've found my anywhere anytime fragrance - and tbh I'm not sure if I will. I think choosing my scent for the day (which if its going to be a busy day, I do the night before) is probably the only really instinctual thing I do regularly, I just go with a feeling of what will match the activity/weather and my mood for that day. Anytime I've tried to override my gut choice, I've actually not enjoyed the fragrance my thinking head chose, so now I just try and listen to those feelings.

Gosh, that sounds a bit woo, doesn't it! 😂

I really love the smell of actual roses, but rose scents always seem to turn sour (I mean really sour - almost vinegary) on me. I do like the patchouli/chypre rose combo, but only if there is more patchouli/chypre-yness than rose. Oh, and I like powdery rose too, but again more powder than rose for me, please! 🙃

@CorneliaStreet I have tried all this L'Artisan Parfumeur scents and like them all. I definitely recommend that discovery set.

@ChiswickFlo I have! 😁 I think you recommended it to me last year, I tried the pp dupe (which I did like) then bought a small bottle of the real thing. I don't wear it often, but I really do love it. A wonderfully rich and warm full-bodied chypre (and a spot on recommendation!). 😊

Thank you for all the discovery set recommendations! I have just bought the Jardin Retrouve one and the Kate Timson one. I have also been influenced by Alice DuParq and have bought the new Cochine one! I am also waiting for a sample of Baklava Musk from Rook. It cost £12 so I hope it's worth it!! It does sound delicious though.

I am going through a rose phase at the moment. Sotd is Delire de Rose by Caron which is an unusual pistachio and rose scent and really does smell quite nutty. I have also recently worn Young Rose by Byredo, Rosa by Santa Maria Novella (one of my faves) and Salt Rose from the 4160 Tuesdays January Joy Box. The latter is lovely. I do hope it gets a proper release.

AprilLady · 26/05/2022 21:05

I tend to lurk more than post on this thread, but am always interesting to read everyone’s views on scents. I like a lot of the ambery, spicy scents which @ChiswickFlo likes, but rose is probably my favourite note of all. That said, I really don’t like EL Knowing. I keep thinking I should, and then testing it and realising I really don’t.

@musicmum75 , my favourite rose scents currently are:
Diptyque’s Eau Rose edp: the best straight up rose I have found.
FM’s Une Rose is a wonderful, rich, boozy rose
Ormonde Jayne’s Damask is a peppery, fruity rose which has some similarities to PDM’s Delina, but less sweet.
Papillon’s Tobacco Rose is really, really lovely. Despite the name the tobaccco note is more like a slightly grassy, hay note than a strong tobacco note.

Hello 👋
Knowing is a vintage type chypre and they aren't for everyone....according to Sarah McCartney only about 4% of people like chypres.

4160tuesdays salt rose is lovely. I was surprised I liked it!

Cantonet · 26/05/2022 21:14

@AprilLady I'm in agreement with you.
Une Rose & Tobacco Rose are in my top few Roses along with La Fille de Berlin, Lipstick Rose & Drole de Rose. I'm a Rose grower - to me these are authentic Rose Scents. I also love Marina Barcenilla The perfume garden as a resinous Rose.

Sotd is Le Jasmin by Miller Harris.
It's a Lyn Harris creation & could be a Perfumer H brand perfume.
It's beautiful in spring & one of my best ever Tk Maxx buys. The oak moss in the basenotes is really beautiful.

DramaAlpaca · 26/05/2022 21:16

Ooh, that's interesting. For some daft reason I am ridiculously proud to be one of the four per cent Blush It's only in the last few years though. Maybe I'm finally, at my advanced age, grown up enough for them! I've only recently discovered Knowing and I adore it.

I need to have a think about rose scents, what I have and what I like.

SOTD is YSL Cinema.
