Got my haircut 2 days ago and just feeling awful. I thought it was the shock of the change, but I think I knew really that it was a bad cut. Today my friend confirmed that it really is bad.

I think it is an inverted bob style. I don't blame the stylist for the style itself, as each thing is technically within what was discussed - although it really doesn't suit me. BUT the execution is (in my opinion) pretty shoddy and I am just so sad.

For example, I wanted it below the chin, but because he cut it almost at the nape from the back, the whole length is very short and only 1 inch sections at the front are below the chin. And these 2 pieces are noticeably longer than the rest of the hair, they look like they should be trimmed off. The back and sides are bulky, and don't lay nicely. At the back especially, there seems to be a second layer underneath messily poking out.

When I pin back the 2 long front sections, the 2 halves are different lengths. I assumed I parted it wrongly, but even when doing a ridiculously deep side part the length discrepancy remains.

I cannot lose any more length, the style itself is very unflattering, and I am petrified of getting it rectified and making it shorter. I can just about pull it into a one inch ponytail, sort of.

Any advice of how to move forward? Have some occasions coming up and feeling so sad. Thanks

Photo?

It will feel/look different in a couple of weeks.
Sorry you’ve ended up with something you hate 😞

JillPole123 · 07/04/2022 00:58

Thanks, will try to attach the back view, until I can sufficiently anonymise (?) the other photos

It doesn't look very straight 😕 i don't think I'd be very pleased with that either

Kanaloa · 07/04/2022 01:03

Gosh. That’s not a great cut.

The only thing I can say is bad haircuts grow out. If you sweep it back with a headband it might not look awful from the front and it will soon grow. Would you consider complaining? I get that it’s hard for them to fix it because you wouldn’t want them near your hair again but you could get a refund if you speak to the manager/owner and show them the hair?

Bunty55 · 07/04/2022 01:07

I think you have to go to another hairdresser and let them take a look and see if anything can be done. You need a pair of fresh eyes on it.

Vanillalatteplease · 07/04/2022 01:08

Whilst you're waiting for it to grow in a little I would use a little wax or putty to 'rough' it up a little. It's more noticeable when you are wearing it so straight.

TooManyPJs · 07/04/2022 01:10

No that's terrible. I would call and complain. Ask for another hairdresser to look at it.

JillPole123 · 07/04/2022 01:11

Glad I am not imagining it to be honest. I can't complain for some convoluted but legitimate reasons (owner did the cut, has some personal stuff going on which means timing of complaint would be insensitive).

On balance, should I just wait it out and get a bit of length back, or should I risk letting someone else have a go? I have an event in 1 month, it should be 1 cm longer by then according to Google...maybe I could get it cut in one month?

ABitDrunk · 07/04/2022 01:12

Oh no, that isn't great. I agree, have someone else give you an opinion and meanwhile do as Vanillalatteplease has suggested.

It does look a lovely colour though.

JillPole123 · 07/04/2022 01:12

Sorry lots of cross posting!

That is a BAD cut, you need to ask for your money back and go and get it fixed by another hairdresser.

tiddlywinks2 · 07/04/2022 01:15

Hairdresser here, all I can say is 😨

Did you get it done at a salon? I'd be calling and asking for it to be rectified, obviously not by the original stylist.

JillPole123 · 07/04/2022 01:16

Thanks all - will speak to someone else then and see what they think. Can't get worse Grin... And thanks for the styling tips, I feel a
bit better just discussing it after a strained 2 days

Go to another hairdresser. Honestly. On the plus side you have lovely hair !
Kanaloa · 07/04/2022 01:18

That’s true, it is lovely! A gorgeous colour and looks shiny and thick. No matter how good a cut my hair is fried from bleaching and really wispy! So maybe take some comfort in the fact that you only need to wait for it to grow out then you’ll have beautiful hair again.

Ballsaque · 07/04/2022 01:20

I agree if you can rough it up a bit,or do that wavy thing with straighteners it will look less wonky.

I know bobs are tricky but that’s why we pay the professionals!!

Bear in mind if you get it rectified it will have to go even shorter.

JillPole123 · 07/04/2022 01:21

@tiddlywinks2 Yep salon, but a 2-man band operation. I assume another stylist would know what was wrong after a one-millisecond look, but is there anything specific I can ask for, e.g. for the less obvious problems like the way it lays? Will try to post side views too

Oh don't be! I had an awful cut, funnily also an inverted bob. Concentrated on growing it out and found a new hairdresser who does curly cuts. I left after my first curly cut not wanting to tie my hair up after the hairdresser for the first time in years

Obviously I've only seen that picture, but the nape is completely wonky, not straight at all. That would have to be evened out, which would then affected the whole hair cut, you need to be prepared to go a little bit shorter. Because none of it is even.

If that's the case with the salon, call them tomorrow, state how dissatisfied you are and request your money back, don't go back for them to fix it. Try and book into another salon to get a correction.

I can't believe they thought that was acceptable. I'm sorry this has happened to you Thanks

JillPole123 · 07/04/2022 01:29

Side view, it's the sides that upset me the most I think (obviously because luckily I can't see the back!). The 2 long bits at the front sort of disguise the severeness when I look at it straight on

Not a big deal. You have beautiful hair. The cut needs a tidy up and the longer bits at the front you mentioned cut in proportion. I know the cut you mean - those exaggerated long bits at the front always look an inch too long.
.

Poppins2016 · 07/04/2022 01:35

I'd ask for it to be evened out, I don't think you need to lose much (if any) length if you get it fixed, it's just about making it uniform. I've had inverted bobs in the past and the cuts I liked the most have had layers cut underneath at the back, so that the hair sat nicely.

I second the advice about adding some texturiser and maybe adding some waves as it's growing out.

JillPole123 · 07/04/2022 01:42

One last photo - I have pinned back the 2 front strands, to show the length discrepancy. Will I need cut the longer side to match the shorter side, or is there a clever way to style this unintended asymmetry away? Changing the parting did not seem to help. Thanks again everyone

I've had inverted bobs in the past too and the best ones have had an undercut, which makes the top layer sit better.
Maybe you could get an undercut to help it sit better without losing any more length?
That would sort out the back at least.
