Trainers at a wedding in 2022

Shinyandnew2022 · 30/03/2022 17:42

I have an April wedding to go to - first one in years and am planning to wear a silk midi length dress with some brand new smart flatform trainers in emerald green .

Came a cross a thread on here from 2018 and most posters were appalled at the idea Grin
What do people think - is this ok post pandemic or will I get there and feel judged ?

If relevant I am nobody at this event just a friend of the MoB and I had decided I would liberate myself from the tyranny of aching feet ! It's my first wedding where I have made the generation shift .. but don't want to look too middle aged and past it .

@ilovecherries

I've had a lot of surgery on one of legs and feet. I wear nothing but trainers. I'm very lucky to be able to walk unaided now as for a long time I couldn't. Oddly enough wearing trainers doesn't detract from my professionalism at work nor make my company at social events any less welcome.
This.

Absolutely this.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/03/2022 21:19

Thanks @Shinyandnew2022 They're totally crazy and obviously expensive/fashion. I don't think people would necessarily even notice that they're trainers.

My daughter said something to me recently, when I was wondering if I could get away with trainers in a 'posh' restaurant, that resonated. Her take on it was that as an otherwise relatively well dressed 50-something, it would be unlikely that anybody would even look at my feet. She was right!

Shinyandnew2022 · 30/03/2022 21:20

I can't believe how many comments I have had and thanks so much for all the yeses as they are making me think 'do you know what I just need to go with what I will enjoy wearing ' and I will wear this again and again !
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but we can't all dress the same or this board would be redundant

The dress is gorgeous. I was kind of on the fence until I saw the trainers but they're really ugly and I love trainers.

Towelseverywhere · 30/03/2022 21:28

I wouldn’t wear heels to weddings anymore but I also wouldn’t wear trainers either. I just feel that trainers are too casual for a wedding . I’d wear some comfortable flat shoes, there is a middle ground

Sexnotgender · 30/03/2022 21:28

The options surely aren’t limited to uncommon heels or trainers.

What about comfortable sandals, flats or wedges?

Shinyandnew2022 · 30/03/2022 21:31
@Shinyandnew2022 is the wedding this weekend? If so I am going to one this weekend and my 17 year old DD is wearing trainers. She will look great, be comfy and wear them again unlike any heels as she has rubbishy bad feet!
It's not next weekend no but I very much hope I will spot some fellow trainer wearers at the one I go to !

I was a groomsmaid a few years back at a summer wedding. It was outdoors & covered quite an area so damn right I wore trainers! Brand new canvas high tops, so it went with the 50s style dress, and I was SO glad I wasn’t reduced to tottering round (or sinking into grass) in high heels. Do it. And who cares about what anyone small minded might think. Anytime you feel ‘judged’ wiggle your toes about in your trainers & enjoy feeling comfort instead.

WeddingFavour · 30/03/2022 21:39

Honestly, I think this will look awful. Lovely for a pub lunch, not appropriate for a wedding. The fact there are so many (or any!) people saying it's too casual means it's a big gamble. There are much nicer, smarter flat shoes that would look a lot better. It's one thing wearing trainers under a floor-length wedding/bridesmaid dress after dinner, wearing them for the whole day with a midi dress is a weird statement. It seems too casual and a bit disrespectful to me. I know people will disagree and say how can shoes be disrespectful, but weddings are formal occasions and should be treated that way (disability etc aside).

MrsPsmalls · 30/03/2022 22:00

I wore leather converse to a wedding last year. I gave no fucks and neither did anyone else as far as I could see. Just wear whatever you like.

Kendodd · 30/03/2022 22:00

I wore white trainers at my own wedding in 1996. I actually think the bride has more leeway than the guests though.
Those green shoes don't look too trainery, they're quite smart.

HeadNorth · 30/03/2022 22:15

Those green shoes don’t really look like trainers, which I think of as running shoes. They look like funky green shoes and you will look fabulous & modern. Much cooler than heeled courts or sandals - and comfier too.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 30/03/2022 22:21

Lovely dress. Really lovely.

I think the green ‘trainers’ just look a tad ‘heavy’ for it but I understand the style

I am shit at links on here but what about a pair do flatform brogues? As in, Stella McCartney rip offs? John Lewis (Kin range) do a silver pair for £69. Easily worn with jeans and dresses after the Big Day.

Porthia · 30/03/2022 22:27

Wear what you will be happy in OP! Those aren’t a pair of old Nike running shoes - they look much smarter than that.

For what it’s worth I wore trainers to a wedding in 2018 (I was 6 months pregnant and decided I just didn’t care what people thought- plus they were sparkly trainers). No one said anything!

Flyinggeese1234 · 30/03/2022 22:34

Oh hang on, they’re not trainers!

Queenoftheashes · 30/03/2022 22:37

I usually end up barefoot or in flip flops at weddings no one gives a shit
I start out in shoes for the ceremony
My sister got married last year in DMs and an hour into the reception I was in crocs

friendlycat · 30/03/2022 22:46

My thoughts exactly. Go girl you’ll look fabulous.
Shinyandnew2022 · 30/03/2022 22:48

Thanks everyone I am catching up with all the comments and am keeping an open mind - have told my DM she needs to come over and give me her feedback as she is my harshest critic - and pretty old school.

She was disappointed I didn't want to wear a hat.

Those worried that I will offend the wedding party I genuinely know they won't care and it isn't a church service either.
My concern wasn't really how they would feel more that other guests will
Judge me and I can see quite a lot of you do think it's not the done thing

IrishMamaMia · 30/03/2022 22:51

I really like both shoes and dress! Had seen those trainers in a fashion mag previously and want to save up for them now. I think it's not classic wedding but it's really smart attire and sometimes you just have to wear what's right for you. Everyone will be focusing on the bride anyway.

bjonesreborn · 30/03/2022 22:53

I got married in January this year and wore flip flops!
Wear what you want on your feet!!!

Craftycorvid · 30/03/2022 22:56

I think the trainers look great. I’m the woman who once wore leopard print ‘creepers’ to a wedding evening do. I look about 117 in formal wear, can’t cope with heels and think, frankly, most wedding guest outfits for women look pretty grim - who on earth dreamed up fascinators? Did someone just go ‘hm, that outfit lacks something - I know! A weird feathery thing that makes the wearer look like a cockatoo.’ Go for comfort, colour and a lovely day.

JudgeRindersMinder · 30/03/2022 23:01

The only issue other guests might have is sheer envy because their feet are killing them in silly shoes and yours won’t be,
,

Fab outfit, have a ball!

AKASammyScrounge · 30/03/2022 23:03

Love the dress. It's a lovely shape and it's kind of jaunty.
The model's trainers take away from it though. Yours look nicer though. The colour is great

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 30/03/2022 23:10

They’re not even the type of trainers I’d wear but I think with the dress you will look fresh, modern and stylish. Not in a way that screams you want to be noticed but you will possibly the best dressed guest at the wedding.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 30/03/2022 23:19

Gorgeous outfit combo… though funnily enough I was looking at the Park Up flatforms earlier this evening, and had been thinking of posting to find out if people found them comfy!
I was thinking of the white, but also wondering if I could invest in a different colour every year!
Now, if only I could find a discount code!
