WWW's six week ten year younger bootcamp WEEK 1, 2008

This is week 1 of the first WWW 10year younger boot camp of 2008. Hello everyone.

Anyone can join, we promise it works and you will feel and look better - and maybe younger - if you follow these rules.

This is about being healthy and feeling and looking better as a result. It's not a diet (although weight loss does seem to occur fairly frequently)

THE RULES ARE:

  • Sunscreen at all times, even though it's winter
  • No or little booze in the week. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can. Many of us have an Omron pedometer
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream/foot cream too, we recommend Flexitol, which is fantastic stuff
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

The idea is that at the end of six weeks we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage.

'm still being good, but finding it harder - I haven't yet got into the habit of being good at weekends as well so am seriously missing wine. But I will persevere.

Exercise: 1h15 with evil Janice - she was slightly nice in that she didn't make me box (would have been difficult as I still can't completely close my hand) but it has healed remarkably wel so I could grip weights.

Food: 2 cups coffee, 1l water. 2 poached eggs on wholemeal toast. 1 glass Pomegranate, acai and blueberry smoothie, 2 pepperami, peach, 2 baci (bad - but I decided I should give in to the craving for comfort food on a very small level or risk complete meltdown), leftover turkey curry. And I'm about to go and put te kids to bed and turn on the steam room, and I am going to eat a delicious chocolate praline cigar that was let over from Christmas as I feel a need for comfort food. But it is 65% cocoa

bamamama · 13/01/2008 02:11

Prufrock - hope your hand is on the mend that sounds soooo painful.
Duchess - go on, buy the new car. It could be a little pregnancy present to yourself
WWW - when I was working I used to get terrible shoulder/back ache from laptop work and driving a lot. I found going for a massage really helped sort it out. My aches were also triggered by stress, perhaps this is impacting on you too?
Bootcamping going fairly well. Drinking a minumum of 3l of water a day as it's so easy to get dehydrated. Packing in a few bike rides too. We only had one bottle of wine Sat night between us which wasn't bad although tbh I'm not really into the idea of booze at the moment I'm just not sleeping well and a booze laden system just seems to make it worse. Ho hum.

what a lovely sounding party Sobernow!

Took light bag and no lunch on Friday and it was a lot easier. My back doesn't hurt at all atm so I think you're all right about rsi/bag combination. Must go online and see if I can order lunch to be delivered to work shortly.

Prufrock, hope your dh gets the job, that sounds lovely, a few months together.

Bamamama, why aren't you sleeping well? Poor you, it's horrible when that happens. Agree about drinking making it worse.

We had a v late but enjoyable night, we went to bed with a bottle of Champagne at about 11 and ds and dd gave us a lie in until 9 AND brought us breakfast in bed, where I am still languishing with the laptop . Have just agreed to pay ds £5.75 to put all dry dishes away and wash all new dishes and tidy all of downstairs (which isn't too bad). Our dishwasher has packed up so...
I'm high on happiness, what a lovely weekend so far.

Prufrock, thanks for Laithwaites rec, will look in a minute. V impressed at your training.

I will start a new thread but not until later this eve so feel free to post your transgressions on this one everyone

Glad hand is healing prufrock, and sorry to hear marina is poorly. Glad everyone else has had good weekends so far ...

V nice meal out with DP last night. Went to a restaurant quite near our house that does about three things amazingly well, and had all of them: beautiful warm bread rolls with caraway seeds and delicious steak and chips, followed by chocolate ice cream. And a small glass of extremely tasty red wine, to remind me what I'm missing. God, how I HATE not being able to drink ... Then home to peppermint tea and another episode of The Wire (I am obsessed).

This morning, yoghurt and muesli, slice of wholemeal toast with marmalade, an apple and a slice of cheese. Vegetable soup to have later.

Paying today for yesterday's swimming, alas: very sore hamstrings, which I'm blaming on loose pregnancy ligaments . Most annoying!

OK, really must go and some work: ostensibly transcribing/writing up interview, which has translated thus far into half an hour on MN and an empty word document. Happy Sundays, all.

Prufrock · 13/01/2008 14:05

batters - do try Laithwaires. You can get really wow wines for £11 - and I speak as one who is regularly treated to £80+ (restaurant prices) wines when entertaining dh's clients. Though I have to say that I can never remember much about them except that they were really very tasty. Dh (due to being spoilt with his job - where you have to buy expensive to make clients feel valued ) could be a bit of a wine snob, but he happily buys and drinks wines in £10-15 bracket for at home.

(Does anybody else find it a little ironic to be discussing wine on a bootcamp thread)

Prufrock · 13/01/2008 14:06

Oh forgot - hope you are feeling better Marin, or at least that you are being looked after well.

unknownrebelbang · 13/01/2008 16:45

Ouch prufrock! and hope you're feeling better Marina.

Hello everyone.

We went out for a meal Friday night - an annual event to take advantage of all three boys being at the same place at the same time lol, only it was a bit of a waste really as we were both shattered. Twee decor with an old-fashioned menu, but the steak was excellent.

Did consider going swimming with the lads today, but we were all too lethargic, and DH has had to work over the weekend, which is always a pita.

Still, got to get a grip, and today is my last day of wallowing.

WideWebWitch · 13/01/2008 17:12

Just back from dishwasher buying expedition and realised at 4pm that I hadn't eaten since my 2 pieces of toast in bed this morning so bought, erm, Burger King chips. And just came in and ate chicken sandwich.

Oh well! Off to watch a film, back later to start new thread.

Hope you are feeling better Marina, and that everyone else has had a good sunday.

Took my new motor out for a spin today (only 1 minor traffic infringement as well) so not much walking but ate healthily at lunch out and hardly any wine. Needless to say, no wine til got home as had the car. Made gorgeous choc brownies for FIL to fatten him up for his op but only licked the spoon which I reckon is OK for a Sunday.

Also a fan of Laithwaites, as I find it helpful to have a bit of guidance when spending decent £££ on wine. Also Berry Bros and Rudd is great for advice. You can get them on line (WWW.bbr.com i think) but don't know if that would be as helpful. I love a majestic trip myself as well.

About to go downstairs, express some milk and do some knitting. I have started making a wee cardigan for a friend whose baby is due in a week! Better get moving! It is also quite a good way of me keeping my greedy paws off the crisps as you can't shovel them in quite as fast with needles in your hand. Having said that though, there is some very delicious jamon from borough market in the fridge which I ought to rehome before bootcamp starts in earnest again tomorrow

Kazzia · 13/01/2008 20:17

Have not kept up with thread or bootcamp. As Batters said - things went downhill on Thurs after night in wine bar with friend and then got into slightly "what the hell" metality so booze resolution slipped for Fri & Sat.

In other areas am still also performing poorly - have bought some fruit tea - packet nice, smell nice, taste - not v nice at all. Has anyone got a good recommendation?

Have been swimming and have done cream but still no pedometer.

Will try to start well tomorrow.

marina · 13/01/2008 20:41

Hello all, well I have certainly drunk my quota of water and more this weekend, have had awful cystitis, yuk. But am on mend now as is prufrock's hand I hope.
Not a great deal eaten and a large amount of cantering off to loo has surely consumed calories! Did manage 11,000 plus outdoor steps daily all of last week as well.
Illness is the latest barrier to tragically prevent me from whipping off the cellophane from Erin and Karen
Hope your worries are utterly groundless www
LOL at the cycle pants foxy and the alcohol-free beer PollyDolly - look at the thread woman it is full of old BootCampers discussing sancerre and eating bacon butties! You go STRAIGHT to the top of the leader board!
Kazzia, I hate fruit tea too, it tastes like cheap hot aftershave IMO
Do you like mint tea, or have you tried redbush (rooibos)? You can have the latter with milk or without and it is caffeine free and low in tannins.
Minimus went fine . It is such a relief to have survived the first session My innate respect for the teaching profession has grown still further - 45 mins of meaningful crowd control and sharing of Roman anecdotes not related to lavatories and I was pooped.
But I only have kids who want to be there, none of the ones whose mothers collared me and said they really wanted little Toby to do Latin are there thank god. Head popped in and out and offered some very helpful tips about breaking the session up more. And I got loads of encouragement from the other teachers still about, what a nice bunch they are

WideWebWitch · 13/01/2008 21:15

I will confess to half a Sloppy Guiseppe and then start a new thread

Marina, glad you're on the mend.

WideWebWitch · 13/01/2008 21:16

And am about to have a glass of red wine with it because I want to!

Sounds great marina.

My steam was good - and I needed it. Forgot to note that as well as the session with PT I also tokk kids and dogs for a long walk, which ended up being even longer because I dropped my mobile halfway roud and didn't realise until nearly the end so I had to run all the way up to the top of the highest hill in Cambridge to find it. Last time I indulge in a skipping race with my dd.

Today:Exercise: 20 minutes cardio, 100 sit ups

Food: 3 cups coffee, 1.5l water. 1 peppermint tea. Granola and skimmed milk. 3 cocktail sausages and 10 cubes cheese. (Kids birthday party with ds - but I didn't eat any cakes!) Roast chicken, courgette and broccoli.

And I've just done my weekly weigh in and I've lost 4 1/2 lbs in one week. Woohoo.

PollyDolly · 13/01/2008 23:00

Well done on the weight loss, Prufrock - 4 1/2 lbs is some going! I think you were most restrained at the kids' party as well. I LOVE cocktail sausages and can hoover a whole plateful, esp if there is some wine for the adults!

Marina, I am only asking about the beer as I am such an old lush that I can't take a week without something! I have tried one from Sainsbergs which is german and tastes almost like the real thing. Have never discovered a suitable wine substitute, can't bear spritzers etc so I'd rather go without. Sorry to hear about your cystitis though, but an impressive amount of exercise.

I am also impressed by the minimus class. I loved it at school and would quite like another crack at it. Do they not teach it in schools any more or just not in the schools near you? It is the key to so many languages that it would be such a shame if its teaching died out.

Well, I am off to sleep now as I have an early start on the 6.55 bus. Think of me plodding across Waterloo bridge in the dark... still haven't put the battery in my shiny new moron. Must sort that out tomorrow.

Night all, sleep well

winnie · 15/01/2008 11:08

Lol at Marina and full body work out
Hope things improve for your Uncle soon and yes it does sound as if your mother lives on another planet. Good for you that you can be firm.

Duchess, good luck with the scan

Batters, re coat but you deserve it: wallow

WWW, thanks for disclosing your toilet exploits! Revolting but obviously necessary.

Prufrock, well done on the weight loss.

I should have weighed this morning but didn't as I've not been great this weekend have eaten lots of crisps with ds in front of a movie and last night a dear friend arrived on my doorstep with a chilled bottle of wine and it would have been rude to refuse
Not the best weekend but not the worst either and both my children are making me very happy at the moment Yaaaaaaaayyyyyy
