Short hair but not sensible!

I'm considering going short, but struggling to find ideas that don't look 'sensible'.
What short haircuts are fun and not too ageing?
I've spent time on Pinterest but I struggle seeing hair separate from made up models!

I have fine hair and glasses, I don't want to age myself, kids are doing it for me anyway Confused.

Anything here?

  1. Its your whole look not just hair, your earrings, make up etc are more on show
  2. Styling products make a big difference
PixiePlease · 23/03/2022 13:30

@JaneJeffer thank you, some good inspo! I really love these two.

Can't really wear any jewellery now as baby pulls on earrings :/
Is that a recipe for frumpy?

Honestly cutting your hair off will age you, and you will have to style it properly every single day. If you want to do something which looks modern then a one length mid-neck bob is probably your best best, but honestly I'd just tie it up.

PixiePlease · 23/03/2022 15:24

@LittleGwyneth I have a bob to the bottom of my neck at the moment, I can't say it looks really interesting, more like every other mum! Any nice ideas for tying it up then? Surely there has be more to it than ponytails Sad.

Absolute rubbish. I look years younger with mine short and it barely needs anything done to it at all. All depends on getting a good cut that suits your hair type and face.
Ifeellikedancing · 23/03/2022 15:34

I have very fine hair and glasses. Mine is very short like the number 2 style in the earlier link just now. The longer styles will take a bit more day to day styling, speaking from experience. I still found it easier to style than a bob when it was a bit longer though.

Juniper68 · 23/03/2022 15:34

Cutting hair makes you look younger usually.

Get a consultation at a salon. Also colour can do amazing things for hair and image.

Can't you get some interesting stud earrings?

Coniferhedge · 23/03/2022 15:58

This is very similar to how I’ve got mine - an undercut pixie. I have it shaved to number 2 underneath and then the top about as long as in the picture. In my experience it’s super easy to style. After washing I spray with some volume spray and blow dry it with a small round brush (takes less than a couple of minutes as it’s so short). Then just add some wax or serum to make it a bit more choppy. I even shave it myself - have my own hair clippers. Only go to the hairdressers about once every 2-3 months to get the top trimmed and back into shape.

Just wanted to add, I have very fine hair and glasses too.

This is nonsense. Going to a short back and sides from long hair has taken years off me! @PixiePlease I have hair a bit like Vicky Mclure from Line of Duty, choppy and long on top so I can wax and put a quiff in with hair powder. My hairdresser was super helpful finding the right style so ask yours!
Lovinglife45 · 23/03/2022 16:12

Loving these pixie cuts - modern, edgy and slick.

When I had a short hair cut, I wore lipstick and minimal make up. I endured my eyebrows were well shaped. They really do help to frame your face. I wore studs and allowed my face to shine. I know some women feel earrings have to be big to 'make up' for the lack of hair but I do not agree.

The number of women I see daily with long hair who would look simply amazing with a short cut.

I am almost tempted to cut my hair againSmile

Thanks for this thread - I would love to go really short. I had it really short for a year or so when I was about 17 then grew it out long again, nor sure why, probably just fancied a change at the time. I badly need a hair cut now, it's shoulder length and just looks so frumpy and gets in my way, I don't have time to do anything with it except leave it out (but then baby often yanks it) or put it in the infamous 'mum bun' or ponytail. My eldest is 4 and she has a super short hair cut, it's basically a short back and sides with a bit more length on top and she loves it. I'm sure she'd love it if I got mine really short too, because she's had comments from other kids about having 'boys' hair. The thing that's stopping me, I feel so embarrassed to say it but - I am really hairy. Typically I get my whole face threaded every month or so, but since I've had the baby (5m) I haven't managed to keep it up mostly due to loads of illness/surgery etc in the last few months. I'm worried if I got my hair done really short, if I have any facial hairs etc it will be much more obvious and I will feel stressed about it...

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 23/03/2022 16:34

I've just gone from a bob to short bit like your 2nd picture, I love it!

Super easy, bit of wax and I'm good to go, wish I'd done it years ago. I'm amazed how many people have said to me 'ooo I daren't go short' Hmm it's hair and as long as you have a good hairdresser who does a good cut which suits you, it's all good.

PixiePlease · 23/03/2022 16:42

@SecondhandTable I could write it myself, it's uncanny! Also had a pixie at 17, have a 4yo DD and a baby Grin. Plus hairy chin. I just pluck it but I get spots and my skin isn't great. I also have horrid shadows under my eyes. I have a Phillips Lumea but it says not to use while breastfeeding Sad.

@HelloSpringIveMissedYou I adore short hair, my DH would love me to try it too. Not sure what style.
Do you colour yours? My hair is brown but I'm allergic to some dyes, I think I can bleach and use semis though.

Fancy sharing a picture Grin

Michelle Williams and Sarahb.h are the short hair queens imo.
I do wish people would stop coming on short hair threads to tell us how old we all must look.

VerityPJohnson · 23/03/2022 16:51

I had my hair cut very short a few months back and still can't decide if it's made me look younger or older.... I think maybe older from a distance and younger closer up, the opposite of long hair Grin. It definitely makes you feel more exposed.

The cut is crucial as you want something that would be ok if not constantly cut, at least two months between cuts.

I think the 'sensible' cuts are often those where there are too many very short layers.

That's rubbish! I look far younger with short hair!

The key is colour, whether you style it and accessories- I love big statement earrings and bright lips with short hair.

Dinotruxagain · 23/03/2022 16:59

I got the huff with mine last year and took the clippers to it. Buzz cut all over., I do have thick hair, but wear glasses and have a 4 year old.
As it grew out I went with a Mohawk, certainly not aging!
Currently sporting a long pixie, it's the easiest thing to style ever.
I shall not be going back to long hair or bobs again any time soon!

PixiePlease · 23/03/2022 16:59

@RosieRoww not sure if it goes with my wide face, as it adds width to the sides- slightly longer bobs are good but baby pulls on hair too much atm

PixiePlease · 23/03/2022 17:04

Would you call this a long pixie and is it sensible? Not sure if it would work with dark hair, bleach makes it more fun.

This works well with fine dark hair.
