Short hair but not sensible!

I'm considering going short, but struggling to find ideas that don't look 'sensible'.
What short haircuts are fun and not too ageing?
I've spent time on Pinterest but I struggle seeing hair separate from made up models!

I have fine hair and glasses, I don't want to age myself, kids are doing it for me anyway Confused.

I know what you mean OP, and I think a lot of that is down to the styling, but also the neatness of the cut. That pic has very neat, regular layers with all the ends pointed and thinned out. I think you can avoid that by asking for more a piecey, choppy or blunter style but also by drying it with a styling product to make it more messy with pieces going in different directions.

My "Michelle" cut isn't blonde btw - I'm dark haired so not the full MW effect, but she is one of my style icons!

absolutelynotfabulous · 24/03/2022 18:09

Mine's quite similar to that picture, @PixiePlease but with blonde highlights and a choppier look. It's very thin (thanks, menopause) and fine so I can't go without highlights, which add some body and thickness. I get it cut every 6-8 weeks (or cut it myself, if desperate).

I also like the Vicky McClure look with length on top. Mine won't do that but I think it would suit you.

Wimbunds · 24/03/2022 18:14

I have short hair and love it - really easy to look after d

Wimbunds · 24/03/2022 18:20

Sorry, DC knocked my arm!

I love having short hair, but have to have it cut every 4 weeks which was a shock at first. Also have found it difficult to get hairdressers who are confident with short hair and 'get it'

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 24/03/2022 18:28

I've had a pixie cut on and off for about 12 years now. I always get to bob length and then cut it off again. I've had it super pixie short like Ginnifer Goodwin which was my absolute favourite.

I shaved my hair off during the pandemic mind you so I'm not so fussed about it, currently growing into a chin length bob so I can get an undercut.

I use Pinterest for all my hair inspiration, I usually search for short pixie/long pixie/short bob, those three searches give me the most hits that I like

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 24/03/2022 18:30

Also my hair is a short bob just now, just around ear length and it takes me forever to style it properly, I can't just get up and go anymore like I could with my pixie.

dumdumduuuummmmm · 24/03/2022 18:30

Like a pp said, it's how you style it and you're overall style. A cut can look fresh on one person and like the dreaded Karen cut on another. Generally speaking, if you are not fresh looking and call yourself short hair 'sassy' or 'funky' its probably bad. If you otherwise are pretty cool looking, your hair will also. Look at the models in the pictures in this thread. Cool looking girls = cool hair. Look in your local supermarket. Angry looking practical mums = Karen cut

Mojoj · 24/03/2022 18:33

@LittleGwyneth do you not suit short hair? Does it make you look old? Short hair, if properly cut, and styled, and if you have the features for it, takes years off you. IMO, long hair past 50's ages everyone.

Another generalisation. A quick look on Google images proves that long hair on over 50s can look fabulous and not at all ageing. Even grey hair

dumdumduuuummmmm · 24/03/2022 18:38

Personally I think the two women here with long hair look much younger and cooler than the one with short hair. It totally depends on the whole person and heir style.

I think Vicky McClure and Emma Willis short hair look great.

StCharlotte · 24/03/2022 20:48
@StCharlotte does it work well with a fringe? I think my forehead is better covered
Mine too. I think it works.

KimikosNightmare · 24/03/2022 21:14

@Coffeepot72

Be careful - I posted at length last year, my edgy modern short cut made me look like Nicola Sturgeon.
To be fair to Nicola Sturgeon ( not a sentence I thought I'd ever say) her current style suits her and is a gazillion times better than what she had when she was young.
KimikosNightmare · 24/03/2022 21:17

@PixiePlease

I look ok with volume on top because of my square face. I DO NOT want to end up looking like this though! Any idea how to avoid it?

I love Michelle William's hair but don't know about bleaching mine, I think it makes it more funky.

That really is a terrible look.
EleanorDeCleaner · 24/03/2022 21:20

I currently have a boring, greying, pouffy and hard to manage neck length bob...would love to go shorter but I've got a very podgy face and a bit of a hump, I'm worried my hideousness will be more apparent with shorter hair.

Cocolapew · 24/03/2022 21:30

My face is the size of the moon and I definitely suit short hair better.
🌝 - me.

Cocolapew · 24/03/2022 21:30

Oh that was a yellow emoji Sad

GettingStuffed · 24/03/2022 21:35

I used to see a girl with incredibly short hair that was dyed leopard print , she looked amazing

WalkingOnSonshine · 24/03/2022 21:44

Mine was similar to this, but grew it out last year in the lockdown.

I had an undercut on both sides, and various colours, from rose gold, copper, blonde highlights etc.

Now I have it as a French Bob with a curtain fringe.

FrangipaniBlue · 24/03/2022 22:39

Mines like this but like a dark chocolate colour.

I literally dry it with a towel, rub some wax in my fingers and rub it in while it's still damp.

If I want the style to hold longer then once it's completely dry (usually by the time I've done my makeup/got dressed) I put a bit of texture gum in, quick blast with hairspray and that's it done.

Short hair but not sensible!
LittleGwyneth · 25/03/2022 13:28

@Mojoj I honestly can't think of a single woman I've seen, famous or otherwise, who makes short hair look appealing. It's just so hard to avoid that 'Karen' cut. Kris Jenner's is dreadful.

LittleGwyneth · 25/03/2022 13:32

I think the pictures @RosieRoww posted earlier on the thread are such a good shout - short without being the Frankie Bridges in the late 00s kind of short. I think people might have missed the part where you said you're in your mid thirties, which isn't helping the ageing vs not ageing discussion.

SquirrelG · 25/03/2022 19:29

I honestly can't think of a single woman I've seen, famous or otherwise, who makes short hair look appealing.

And on a daily basis I see women with long hair who would look so much better if their hair were short. Simply being long does not make hair look gorgeous - it needs to be thick enough and in good condition, and to suit the wearer's face. So often it is none of those things.

Lovinglife45 · 25/03/2022 20:50

squirrelg
I agree. So many women wearing shoulder length hair that is unflattering. Fine if thick, healthy and cut professionally, not fine if flat and lank looking.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2022 21:09

Just a word of caution, the Pixie cut means you need to commit to regular hairdresser appointments . Mine was Pixie lemgth , I dyed it -much easier with short hair as minimal overlap and easy to change .
Cut every 5 weeks maximum . It can go from "ok" to "aargh" overnight .

And growing it out when you get bored is an utter balls-ache
I'm at collar length wavy bob now
I don't think short hair aged me but I never went without earrings and I wore make-up more ( or I felt a bit blokey )
