I once had to queue for an art exhibition in the cold. I was wearing one of those polar bear knitted hats with the ears, eyes and nose (and earflaps for my, you know, actual ears).

Bloke I was talking to in the queue was rather censorious when he realised what the hat was.

He was a twat, as it turned out from further conversation. I was in my 50s at this point and didn't give a fig.

(I don't like Disney as a corporation but that's by the by.)

CathyorClaire · 14/03/2022 09:55

Go for it.

I'm way older than you,OP and have bought a Gremlins Christmas jumper and a Snoopy sweatshirt in the past few months. If anyone doesn't like it they don't have to look.

McScreamysGhostPants · 14/03/2022 09:59

I only came on this thread to really "dim and gloom" and suck the fun out of it and hoik my neck-high judgy pants like a bitter lonely Octogenarian , but I see that @Iamthewombat has already taken that role.

Ah well. You can't piss on every parade.

Op, buy what makes you happy. I can't imagine how closed coffin tight it would feel to live your life constantly worrying about what every body else thinks about your life choices. Your dress choices. The colour of your shoes. Your perfume. You lack of perfume. Your bread choices and sandwich filling. That's a road to bat shit misery.

I collect irregular choice shoes ( mostly for display) and Carolina dress room dresses. And snag tights in every colour of the rainbow. I don't give a shiny shit what other People think and as I work in a primary school nobody bars an eye. And if they do? I don't care! Try it, it's liberating!

camperjam · 14/03/2022 10:10

I WFH, am I allowed to buy one or do I need to worry about what my colleagues think too? Bonkers.

Op, buy the bag.

tigger1001 · 14/03/2022 10:16

@Iamthewombat

Oh, you think that nobody will judge you by what you wear? Big mistake. Big. Huge (see what I did there?)
Says more about the person doing the judging than the person with a cute backpack to be honest.
Gonnagetgoing · 14/03/2022 10:19

They're not my cup of tea (certainly for £70!) and with Disney association too but if you like them go for it.

I have a friend who'd definitely get one.

If I could afford one I’d have one of their studio Ghibli bags in a heartbeat! If you can afford it then go for it!

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 14/03/2022 10:51

Nah I disagree with PP you don't need any special air 😅 to 'pull it off' that's some BS..just wear what you like, it doesn't matter.

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 14/03/2022 10:55

@Iamthewombat

Here comes the invective. Instead of throwing insults you could try dealing with the truth, which is that irrespective of your personal taste in glittery disney-based clothing and accessories, you won’t be taken seriously if you choose to adorn yourself with them.

Which is fine if you don’t want to be taken seriously, although your colleagues may have something to say about that. If you make that choice though, don’t cry that you are paid less than men. You don’t see them trying to dress like children or acting ‘cute’ or submissive or childlike. Why do you think that is?

Even if a few men did start carrying kids’ Disney backpacks etc., they would soon be persuaded out of it by their friends instead of encouraged to keep on because ‘life is too short’.

The issue is with the misogynistic people making those judgments based on fuck all, not with the person with a bag. A bag says nothing, means nothing it's a bag.
LubaLuca · 14/03/2022 11:08

I don't know. To me, novelty items scream 'I'm mad/, me!' (or ditzy, cutesy, whatever message you think the bag gives) in a very unconvincing way. It's a bit like a personality prop. I think the fact you're not sure yourself is an indicator that you don't think it's right for you.

I feel the same way about men in 'funny' t-shirts - they want you to think they're a joker. Hmm.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/03/2022 11:09

i used my dd's barbie lunch box in my 40s

Chishnfips · 14/03/2022 11:20

@Lurking9to5

I agree with the others, but could you find a middle ground. Fiorelli do some rucksacks that have flowers on them. They're lovely and not as twee as the cath kidston laminated floral rucksacks which I wouldn't use for work either. ]]

]]

Why should she have to tone it down or compromise?

She didn't say that she wanted a patterened one she wants a Disney one.

WandaThePanda · 14/03/2022 11:27

What kind of bag covers "I'm really judgemental and only respect people who dress and act exactly as I do?"

Quite Grin

OP, if you like it, buy it! Presumably if you have the means to buy a bag you are a grown, professional woman and normal people will judge you as such, rather than on your choice of accessories.

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 14/03/2022 11:37

I don't think the print on a fabric screams anything, sometimes people just like things and buy them. It's not always that deep.

I don't have the money to spend the best part of £100 on a backpack but if OP likes something and has the money to spend then it's not a big deal, it doesn't 'say' anything about her, it's just what she likes.

Did I see the price on that right? £369 for a backpack...made from 'eco leather'? What is eco-leather??

It's nice but not (in my opinion) £369 nice.

The first one is lovely (and I'm off to buy it now, thank you Grin ) the second one would give me nightmares!!! I thought it might be something like Hedwig from Harry Potter but it's the exact opposite.
Iamthewombat · 14/03/2022 11:56

Call me when you see Christine Lagarde carrying a Disney backpack. Or Ursula van der Leyen. Or Nancy Pelosi.

No?

I get that for some people, their ideal is for nobody to judge them by their attire, ever. The problem is, everyone makes those judgments, whether they admit to it or not. Why else is the Style and Beauty forum full of requests like, “is this dress suitable for a wedding?” or “is this outfit frumpy?”.

So if the OP asks for opinions on whether she, as a 30 year old, would be wise to buy a glittery kids’ backpack for everyday use, I’m going to answer honestly. I can’t help it if you don’t like the truth.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 14/03/2022 11:58

OP, do you have aspirations to be President of the European Central Bank?

Iamthewombat · 14/03/2022 12:05

How do you know what the OP’s career aspirations are? That’s internalised misogyny right there.

There are several posts on here from people pretending that you can do a senior professional job AND wear childlike accessories, and that it won’t make any difference to your career or how you are perceived (although there’s quite a difference between a professional man wearing Batman socks and a professional woman carrying a glittery Minnie Mouse backpack)

Or, there are people claiming that how you dress shouldn’t make any difference to how you’re perceived and anyone who thinks that it might is ‘judgy’ etc.

OP, if you like it, buy it! Presumably if you have the means to buy a bag you are a grown, professional woman and normal people will judge you as such, rather than on your choice of accessories.

Why should she have to tone it down or compromise?

Are you seriously suggesting that if Christine Lagarde carried one of those silly bags, her colleagues wouldn’t remark on it?

MaryAndHerNet · 14/03/2022 12:07

Call me when you see Christine Lagarde carrying a Disney backpack. Or Ursula van der Leyen. Or Nancy Pelosi.

If these people love Disney, want to carry a Disney bag, isn't it a shame they can't be themselves without judgement?

If a leader is making the right decisions and leading well, why would it matter if they're wearing colourful clothes that they like? Sounds like a tool to beat people down with to me.

Iamthewombat · 14/03/2022 12:08

You’re confusing the way things are with the way you would like them to be. The OP’s question concerned the former.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 14/03/2022 12:08

How do you know what the OP’s career aspirations are? That’s internalised misogyny right there.

I don't know. That's why I asked. the. question.

See?

But, please do continue throwing a tantum over the OP wanting a silly bag. It's not making you look at all foolish.

Iamthewombat · 14/03/2022 12:12

You are predictable. You’re losing the argument and your response is to claim that I’m ‘having a tantum (sic)’.

No, I’m answering the question and joining the debate. You might want to look at some of the posts on the opposing side of the argument though. Swearing and insults probably fit better with your definition of a tantum (sic).

Flossyhair · 14/03/2022 12:13

Get it and fuck what anyone else thinks.

You know some of the nastiest bullying bitches I have ever met in previous jobs, wore the smartest suits, expensive leather handbags and designer shoes.

You buy it, use it, enjoy it and if others choose to judge you on it (or judge you on what you wear), then the issue is with them. Life is too short not to treat yourself if you can afford it.

Post a photo when you buy it.
