Hello, I bought this Ghost dress on Vinted to wear to a wedding. I've not worn a dress for a few years, and I've put on a bit of weight (and had two children) - and I just don't know what suits me any more.

I'm a size 12/14 and 5ft11. The dress is a large, do you think it's too big? It was a bargain, and I do love the fabric so I was considering having it taken in. Do you think that would work? Or is the shape just wrong?

Thank you!

I can imagine it working at a wedding if you wear it with a pale narrow belt at the waist and maybe some cut away ankle boots and a cream stole.

jessieminto · 12/03/2022 17:17

It's exactly the kind of dress I wear for work. I think it's lovely but not dressy enough for a wedding.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 12/03/2022 17:37
That's nice. I thought I needed a v neck because I've got wide shoulders and small boobs - but perhaps I'm wrong.

I think I need to go to a shop and try a load of things on. I was hoping to save some money by buying second hand, but that's tricky when you're not sure what suits you any more.

@B0J0ker

I think it looks nice as it is, but would look even better if you had it taken in to fit your arms/bust. The extra underarm material makes it less flattering. I think a dressmaker would 'lift' it at the shoulders which would take up some underarm excess and also get the bust part on your bust. My mum used to alter a lot of dresses in this way for me, made them look a hundred times better.

Regarding ironing, you'll need to be really careful and patient with it - I'd be cautious and would place a thin, damp cloth over each part and 'press' rather than iron it.

Shoes - I think it'd look amazing with some heeled Mary-Janes, kind of 1940s style and a bit glam, (maybe in the reddy-brown spot colour. Try Ruby Shoes or Vinted, Ebay etc). However as you're also lovely and tall and slim flats would also work if you don't get on with heels.

You've got a lovely figure - I think a Medium in this dress would have been a perfect fit, and the Large is just that tiny bit big.

Really hope you're pleased when it's all sorted and you enjoy the wedding!

Thank you, this is really useful. I'll see about getting it adjusted. It was only £12, so not expensive even with spending a bit more on alterations.

Wedge sandals would work great with this!

Riverlee · 12/03/2022 17:43

You have a lovely figure (where have you put weight on?!) I and the colour is great on you.

I think it’s a bit loose around your bust.

I think it could work for a wedding with some nice heels, bag etc.

Sisisimone · 12/03/2022 17:51

I dont think it looks too big but I think it's far too casual for a wedding

LetHimHaveIt · 12/03/2022 18:01

It's completely inoffensive and you look 'nice' in it - but not much better than nice. And you could look fabulous at 5 ft 11 ins, and a size 12-14. It looks like a fairly unshowy day dress. You could just as soon be a teaching assistant in it, as wear it to a wedding.

LairyMcClairy · 12/03/2022 18:06

It’s only my point of view but I think a puffy sleeve suits very few people but definitely not those with broad shoulders.
I think small boobs suit high neck or round neck but not v neck and it creates a lack of balance between top and bottom. I’m no expert though!

Loopytiles · 12/03/2022 18:11

Don’t much like the dress for a wedding, bit too ‘conservative day dress’, it’s too big in places and getting things adjusted is v expensive.

Would keep looking, there will be better options!

Loopytiles · 12/03/2022 18:13

Agree with PPs that it’s nice for a ‘day dress’ or more casual occasions.

Was literally going to say this. Nothing wrong with you or the dress but it’s not a wedding guest dress.

It’s a wedding. You are aiming for something that reflects it’s a day of celebration and importance.

Ebay is awash with designer second hand bargains. Sure you can do better especially in the “ off season”.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 12/03/2022 18:15

I think you look lovely but the dress is old-ladyish.

Oblomov22 · 12/03/2022 18:16

It's nice and fits you but is far too casual and daytime for a wedding. Had no wow factor at all.

Dancingsmile · 12/03/2022 18:18

It doesn't fit you very well.
You have a great figure and there will be other styles that will look stunning on you.
The dress looks droopy round the bust, arms. Just doesn't hang well.

I think you’d suit this style too. Sorry- I’ll stop posting now!

LairyMcClairy · 12/03/2022 18:22

To be honest, looking at the photos again you’ve got a great figure and would suit most styles (just not the puffy sleeve).
Go shopping and try lots of stuff on- go for styles you wouldn’t usually pick up just to see.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/03/2022 18:24

I’m quite tall. I think it’s not the best length on you.

Tall people suit 3/4 calf length. That looks too short.

DSGR · 12/03/2022 18:25

Not a dress for a wedding, it’s a dowdy colour and far more of a day dress. Also, you don’t seem that old and the dress ages you! You have a nice figure, find something more flattering.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/03/2022 18:25

I’ve just had another look. Ignore my last post

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 12/03/2022 18:25

It's a bargain for twelve quid though. If I were you I'd keep it unaltered and wear the hell out of it all summer.
You can probably do better for the wedding.

Gardeningcreature · 12/03/2022 18:27

I really like it.
How about teaming it with a hat and sandals?

JofraArchersFastestBall · 12/03/2022 18:29

My sister is going to bring some more options for me to try in the week. She's quite stylish, and a similar shape to me, so that might sort me out a bit.

I'm going to keep this one for casual summer wear. I do like it, but certainly don't feel fabulous in it (if I did, I don't think I'd be asking here, if that makes sense). I dress up so rarely, and thus will be my first ever night away from the children, so I'd like to feel special somehow. Plus I'd like to make the effort for my friend too of course.

It’s lovely but maybe a bit casual for a wedding. You have a great figure by the way.
