I think a man posting to ask what watch to buy would not have other men telling him off, insinuating he's silly etc.

I completely disagree. Spending vast amount of money on watches - just to show off your wealth - is also a complete waste of money. I wouldn't date a man who thought a fancy watch was desirable.

Exactly. The comments on this sort of thread are always:

  1. Reductive (“support Ukraine, don’t buy a handbag!” … um, you can do both)
  1. Misogynistic

By all means show us a link where men discussing buying a discretionary item lay into another man who is asking for advice. I'll wait. Grin

Also, vast amounts? Some perspective: www.atlasmarinesystems.com/most-expensive-yachts/

Time to touch some grass, people.

You’re not on a board about watches ticking naughty men off though are you?

Maireas · 27/02/2022 08:59

The judgement on here is horrible. People are posting images of heavy duty rucksacks, referring to £5 charity bags, insinuations about mental health, and of course, Ukraine!
Her money, her choice, it's Style and Beauty, just have a quick scan through the topics. If you think you're superior, and only spend money on your cats or a beach holiday in Greece, fine. Scroll on.

Polene handbags are very stylish, lots on their site.

I also love Jerome Dreyfuss but not sure they do a bug sized bag.

DoThePropeller · 27/02/2022 09:03

Here you go, plenty to be cracking on with here folks, think you’re gonna raise loads for charity once you let all these people know you can buy a watch for £20 instead of £40k.

I'd go for Strathberry or Aspinal OP- if you're careful you could even just about afford one of each! Or an Aspinal tote and then have about £400 to spend on a pair of designer sunnies, loafers or something.

Motherofgorgons · 27/02/2022 09:05

@JofraArchersFastestBall

I'm not really a handbag person - but I like lovely things and fully understand why people love them.

If I was in the market for a beautiful bag I'd absolutely go for this one. www.margarethowell.co.uk/womens/shop/accessories/bags/music-tote-smooth-saddle-leather-dark-brown

Enjoy your bag, whatever you decide to buy op

I really like this because it looks so bohemian and different from the other bags. May not suit a corporate environment though, but in my creative profession it would look very cool.

For evening bags I have a couple of Bottega Veneta Olimpia bags in small and medium. I think they're the next best thing until I can afford a Chanel

I'm a self confessed Chanel addict (until I can afford Hermes) BUT I will admit, Bottega Veneta leather is just something else. So soft and buttery, the bags ooze class (as according to some on this thread CLASS is so important Grin) and no huge labels etc mean Bottegas are a discrete kind of luxury

Totalwasteofpaper · 27/02/2022 09:12

Yes yes yes to the internalised misogyny
Derailing and Fucking exhausting

@DoThePropeller hope you found some good inspiration on the thread and hope you buy something that brings you joy for many years.
One piece of advice:think carefully before buying one in black.
Something I have found which surprised me is I don't use black bags as much as thought I would and a good neutral (oxblood, taupe, tans, even the right shade of red!) is way more wearable, "pops" more with outfits and looks more special.

Maireas · 27/02/2022 09:14

Good advice about the black bags. They seem practical, but a different colour could be more interesting.

JolieJ · 27/02/2022 09:50

@naanbread2

Spending £1000 on a hobby is totally different to spending £1000 on a bag though. Get yourself a bike or some golf clubs instead!
What am I reading? How is that different? Neither of those things are necessary for surviving minimally so what's the difference? People make posts on mumsnet about other expensive things all the time, why are handbags always the one who being the virtual signally judgemental comments? Confused

Avoid the thread if you don't agree with it?!

ColdCottage · 27/02/2022 10:05

Mulberry Amberley. I LOVE mine (I have a Bayswater too) it's great as I can get enough stuff in it, it looks great for a night out as well as wearing day today and works if you have children and need space for a few extra bits and free hands

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/02/2022 10:23

@Grantingmum

I honestly don't understand the handbag thing. I realise that's not the point of your thread. Is that really want you want to do with your money? Maybe give it to charity.
What makes you think the OP doesn't already give to charity?

I expect she really does want to do that with her money otherwise she wouldn't have posted about itHmm

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/02/2022 10:24

I really like that Chloe Kiss!!

peaceanddove · 27/02/2022 10:29

Perhaps it hasn't occurred to the virtue signallers here that other people might already donate to charity and already have a nice holiday booked and already have plenty of other nice clothes & shoes - but they can still also spend £1K on a handbag as a purely frivolous treat.

clpsmum · 27/02/2022 10:29

I'm afraid I'd be buying a cheap bag and be living it up
In Greece with @Neolara

You want a cheap handbag? Fine. The OP doesn't. Maybe she doesn't want a holiday in Greece either. I certainly wouldn't. We're all different. There's been a lot of judgement on here which has got very unpleasant.
Scoose · 27/02/2022 10:38

I love a handbag thread! I've got a few mulberry bags and agree with other posters that Bayswater's are very heavy when filled. Have you considered an Alexa ? I've got an oversized one which is 10 years old and still going strong! and the standard sided one and they are so handy as you can wear them across body or carry them by the top handle. I also recently got the larger sized lily which is lovely and fits a fair bit in but possibly not big enough for work. If you think black is a bit boring have you considered oxblood? It's a lovely colour and goes with virtually everything!

Sgtmajormummy · 27/02/2022 10:42

I also like the Givenchy Antigona. I even got as far as the shop to decide between mini and medium. But my budget isn’t stretchy enough for now.

Aspinal of London do a very nice Mayfair bag at a lower price.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/02/2022 10:43

If the OP wanted holiday suggestions, she'd have asked I'm sureConfused

DoThePropeller · 27/02/2022 10:46

I’m quite taken with the Givenchy Antigona in ox blood actually. Has anyone purchased from the handbag clinic before? www.handbagclinic.co.uk/product/givenchy-antigona---medium-8767

The olimpia is gorgeous although worry that even the medium will be a bit small, I will try and see one in person.
