Anyone got long grey/white hair?

So.. the time has come when my hair is pretty much snow white under my brunette colour, according to my hairdresser, and I’ve gone a bit lighter in preparation to embrace the white, or at least save roots showing within two weeks.

I’m thinking of aiming for white with a toner eventually. My hair is quite long and I’d like to keep it that way.

Anyone done this, or know of anyone who has?

Mine is silver and about just below shoulder length. I'm growing it as long as possible. Check out annikavonholdt instagram for some stunning long grey hair inspiration.

grannycake · 18/02/2022 12:21

Mine is grey/silver and is just above my shoulders- I love it

Violetmo0n · 18/02/2022 12:24

My mums is silver grey, just below shoulder length.
It looks lovely, she gets a lot of compliments.

CMOTDibbler · 18/02/2022 13:06

I'm white/silver/grey (whitest at front) and have bra strap length hair. I grew my grey in at 38, now 49 and I love it

ArabeI · 18/02/2022 13:44

I'm a member of some long hair community-type groups and there are plenty of people with varying shades of white, grey silver. It might be worth a look, somewhere like that, for some inspiration.

Pangolin44 · 18/02/2022 14:20

Me! Mine is quite a bit past my shoulders, very thick and in great condition since I ditched the dye (about 7 or 8 years ago). I bloody love it.

Pyri · 18/02/2022 14:21

I’ve seen a few people like this and I think it looks stunning, really classy.

The only thing is to keep on top of conditioning treatments so it looks a glossy silver rather than a dull grey, if that makes sense?

WouldBeGood · 18/02/2022 14:29

Thanks everyone!

Yes, @Pyri I keep my hair in good nick and always will, I look witchy otherwise!

Good to hear people have done this.

How amazing does annika van holdt look?! If I could get her bone structure and figure too, please! 🤣

I was going to start a similar thread. I've noticed a lot more silvery hairs in my golden blonde hair. At the front mainly and not really visible to others but I know they are there. It's never been dyed and I'm not wanting to start either. It's lovely to hear women positive about their natural hair.

Giggorata · 18/02/2022 14:47

Shoulder length, grey/blonde, heading towards silver (with a bit of help)

Longfurry · 18/02/2022 14:54

Could I hear from people who started to love theirs even if they didn't at the start?
I'm fully natural now and it's nice, but I still feel a bit washed out and miss the punchiness/ contrast with my skin.
On the other hand I do not want to have to do it all again, it took almost two years.

WouldBeGood · 18/02/2022 15:08

I am planning to do it gradually, with the help of highlights and toners, and probably toners on it when it’s natural. Quite happy with artifice! Just not seeing white roots every two weeks!

I grew my silver in throughout lockdown, I have shoulder length hair. I love it and love not having to colour it but how do you get it a bit shiny? Years ago when I was brown haired I used John Frieda brunette gloss creme and that was great, not sticky . I haven't found anything like that which suits my silver hair yet.

DelphiniumBlue · 18/02/2022 16:54

Yes, I grew it out during lockdown. I had a few lowlights put in to break up the dye line which worked really well, I had those twice over about 18 months. I still have a bit of brown on the bottom, but it's faded and will probably come off in the next trim, and I've got 2 white streaks in the front that didn't get lowlighted, they are really cool.
The back of my hair is darker than the front, and it seems to have natural streaks, so that's good. I've got long layers, front is shoulder length, back is a bit longer.

Dottychickens · 18/02/2022 16:58

I’ve joined silver sister Facebook group and there are some stunning long white haired Women in that group.

IvorCutler · 18/02/2022 20:29

I love long white/grey hair and I especially love seeing long hair on older women. I hope mine is in good enough condition to stay long as I get older. I remember there were a couple of models who used to be in the fashion pages of guardian weekend magazine with long grey hair. They were stunning.

Darklane · 18/02/2022 20:42

Mine is pure white, shoulder length. Wouldn’t swap it for any other colour.

WouldBeGood · 18/02/2022 20:59

This is inspiring. Thanks all.

I’m going gradually lighter … will embrace the white!

Mine is silver grey and longish (past my shoulders). It's in great condition since I stopped colouring it. I've had loads of positive comments and intend to let it get a fair bit longer!

Anyone got long grey/white hair?
leotardrock · 22/02/2022 08:14

I grew mine out during lockdown, basically put a grey toner over the blonde highlights I had.
I'm still very salt & pepper so did have a few new highlights put through the underneath again I use a grey toner.
It's amazing not having to worry about roots anymore!

WouldBeGood · 22/02/2022 08:44

Thanks!

The freedom from roots is what I’m really after.

I went to a new hairdresser and she basically told me it is time!

I had very dark hair which is not silver/grey - a few dark hairs left.

I am used to it - and think there's a level on which it's better than coloured hair which can make people look rather washed out, unless they then slap on bright make up. And even then it tends not to work. (It's like men who have transitioned. However hard they try it's not quite convincing.)

I tend to wear quite muted colours. Also Patti Smith is my style icon - with a dash of Mary Beard.

WouldBeGood · 22/02/2022 08:53

@JennieLee I didn’t know much about Patti Smith til I listened to her reading her autobiography- what a woman!

I worry about the not genuine look.

My style is generally rock hen by choice, so I will channel this 😃

Yes, mine Grin I have never dyed my hair (am now early 60s) and it is naturally thick and silver grey I usually wear it tied back in a 'messy bun' but it looks great when I have it professionally blow dried - twice a year!
