This picture is very unflattering - why does John Lewis think it's a good look? I'd probably look even worse in them by the way.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Commented on the other thread. The model is fine - it's great to see a real body - but the knickers are a size too small for her.
Agree. They need to be a size bigger at least, and the bra probably could be aswell. It would only put me off because they look to tight therefore loo uncomfortable.

[quote Giggorata]@PizzaDays, I corrected my terminology directly after I posted, perhaps you didn't see it.

@oviraptor21

For PP - yes these are pants. See dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/pants

Agree with other PP that the pubeless look is ... dispiriting. Nudity guidelines or not it perpetuates the idea that women should be pubeless. So the good work JL is doing in promoting a wider range of body shapes is partially undone.

The pants themselves look fine. I've never found mesh scratchy, so long as it's not a thong or those ones where the fabric just rides up into the crack

Disagree, I don’t want to see pubes in knicker ads
StarlightLady · 17/01/2022 06:56

I always buy 2 pairs of matching knix when l buy a new bra. I’m a 36F, so to understand the style and fit l want to a model a similar size to me. I’ve no issues with anything being see through though.

Agree mesh is not scratchy, it’s soft if the quality is right.

They can’t show pubic hair in knicker ads, so let’s not go there. Personally, l opt not to have pubic or underarm hair; my choice. But l don’t criticise those who opt to.

Pubic depilation was happening in the bath houses in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, it’s nothing new.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 17/01/2022 07:15

I am afraid I also think it looks unappealing and does not make me want to buy the pants. They look too small unflattering and uncomfortable. Most people are looking to hide their overhang rather than show it off in see through pants.

I had a trawl around the site and oddly they have got the usual skinny models wearing the full brief big granny type pants and the plus size/ relatable models in bikinis and thongs. Anyone can wear whatever underwear they like but I would have thought they should tailor the ads to the people actually likely to buy the products and put the granny pants on the plus size ladies and the thongs on the skinny ones as those are the choices that most people IRL make

I'm not sure that citing two societies that were deeply patriarchal and misogynistic really supports your contention that this is in any way a truly free choice.

Women were not citizens in Ancient Greece. Citizenship was only for men.

Women were controlled by men throughout their lives, subject to strict veiling rules, barely allowed to leave their homes, and very much treated as the property of men.

I am not sure why anyone would want to emulate anything about their lives tbh.

Aphrodite31 · 17/01/2022 07:37

@bedington

Well done JL
Yeah.

Yes it is realistic. It is accepting/to a degree celebrating.

The fxxking misery those perfect abs perfect everything lingerie body pics cause ... brutally undermining any of us with less than 'perfect'. I think this move from JL is GREAT.

It makes me want to cry, that they have actually decided to do this and done the shoot and put up the ads. Cry with a kind of relief.

Thank you JL and thank you MN for bringing my attention to it.

ZoeTheThornyDevil · 17/01/2022 09:02

They look a bit snug, but generally I think she looks like a pretty, happy lady.

I am enjoying the meeting that JL marketing staff will be having this morning over their traffic stats though.

I often wonder this when someone posts a link to an item… would the numbers be significant enough for them to notice and do you think they ever trace the source back to an online conversation ? ( whether here or elsewhere)

Billandben444 · 17/01/2022 09:40

They might be ordering an extra container full of scratchy pants 😁

OP posts:
SirChenjins · 17/01/2022 09:41

On the off-chance that the JL marketing team are reading this..please continue to use a variety of sizes and shapes of models, with fewer in the smaller and larger sizes and more in the mid sizes, as per the general population. A mix of ages and body shapes would be fab too.
And please - no airbrushing or filtering, no soft porn, no borderline fetish stuff (I’m looking at you and your Instagram, Snag).

Mariabombia · 17/01/2022 09:43

I genuinely think she looks great ❤️

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 17/01/2022 09:44

I agree that it's definitely a move in the right direction. Of course slim and 'skinny' women (hate that word) are real women. And they aren't all perfect either. They are different shapes, with different proportions, different heights and have lumps and bumps, scars, uneven skin tone etc just like average sized or bigger women. We need to see more women we can relate to, because those with so called traditional model figures make up a very small percentage of the general population and yet, up until now, they have been modelling ALL of the clothes.

ShirleyPhallus · 17/01/2022 09:53

There are a lot of things that determine the success of a campaign, it isn’t just website traffic but things like how long someone spent on the site, did they click elsewhere on the site afterwards, did they share the link, did they actually buy anything, what are people talking about (ie is it all positive discussion, no). A few extra hundred hits is not going to get the team going like some posters think it will.

I’ve just looked at Snag’s instagram and OMG. It’s almost pornographic in places!

5128gap · 17/01/2022 10:21

@user1641832968632486258

Hang on, why is it ok to use dehumanising language about slim women but not larger women?
Because people who struggle with their weight think its acceptable as its punching up. They fail to take account of the fact that a slim body is not necessarily considered attractive by its owner, or by society, that only idealises a very specific type of slim; that the absence of fat is not synonymous with 'perfection', and that slim women have hang ups too. Referring to women as stick insects is every bit as bad and as hurtful as fat shaming as its still telling them their bodies are unattractive.
Kione · 17/01/2022 10:22

Totally. That's how they would look on me and it gives me a much better idea than seeing them in a fit model where I would think "not buying that as I am not a model and they won't look like that on me"

oviraptor21 · 17/01/2022 17:49

Yes .... they can work out where the click came from.

Disagree, I don’t want to see pubes in knicker ads

Why not? Is there something wrong with them?

Yes, it’s a very intimate part of someone that I have no interest in seeing. If I want to buy a pair of knickers, interested in seeing the pair of knickers not someone’s bush. I also don’t want to see labia or anything else intimate.
JMAngel1 · 18/01/2022 12:47

Gosh no, it wouldn’t make me want to buy them. I prefer adverts to be aspirational - to give me hope that I too may look like that in said item even though I may be deluded Grin
I’ve had 2 c sections and no way would want to look like that model.

Gonnagetgoing · 18/01/2022 12:54

Too tight and all over bikini wax doesn't look comfy... if she'd had a normal bikini wax that I think would look more realistic.

She looks great as a normal sized model but I suppose I'd prefer to maybe see more stretch marks and cellulite.

@StarlightLady - I had no idea they couldn't show pubic hair in knicker ads - really?
StarlightLady · 18/01/2022 13:02

@Gonnagetgoing - That is l understand the rules.

‘Not sure what a “normal bikini wax” is? Most friends l know (l’m early 40s not a teen) who do go for waxing have all off.

No it doesn’t. Most people manage to dress themselves in a much flattering way. I feel sorry for the model.

Women wearing knickers a size too small? I'm not sure that is reality.
