This picture is very unflattering - why does John Lewis think it's a good look? I'd probably look even worse in them by the way.

Because people who struggle with their weight think its acceptable as its punching up. They fail to take account of the fact that a slim body is not necessarily considered attractive by its owner, or by society, that only idealises a very specific type of slim; that the absence of fat is not synonymous with 'perfection', and that slim women have hang ups too. Referring to women as stick insects is every bit as bad and as hurtful as fat shaming as its still telling them their bodies are unattractive.

Sorry but I don't quite agree.

Being fat-shamed involves some implied moral judgement - that you are in fact lazy/greedy/weak/incompetent if you've 'let' yourself get like that.

Stick insect to me means very luckily not prone to putting on weight. No merit due for being so thin. It's just genetics.

Nobody should feel judged because of their body.

PersonCareHotline · 19/01/2022 22:41

I prefer photos that give me a realistic impression of the garment rather than being tricked or cagoules into buying something having being given a false impression.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 19/01/2022 23:13

That photo is horrendous. Why would JL (or the model) do that???

AlwaysinaFlap · 20/01/2022 00:27

@CovoidOfAllHumanity

I am afraid I also think it looks unappealing and does not make me want to buy the pants. They look too small unflattering and uncomfortable. Most people are looking to hide their overhang rather than show it off in see through pants.

I had a trawl around the site and oddly they have got the usual skinny models wearing the full brief big granny type pants and the plus size/ relatable models in bikinis and thongs. Anyone can wear whatever underwear they like but I would have thought they should tailor the ads to the people actually likely to buy the products and put the granny pants on the plus size ladies and the thongs on the skinny ones as those are the choices that most people IRL make

You hear that plus size ladies? Granny pants for you according to @CovoidOfAllHumanity

But most people who are not fat are also not excessively thin, which stick insect implies. Overweight people use the word skinny, instead of slim to describe people who are a healthy weight. It's not acceptable to call someone a stick, twig, skeleton etc. just because they are slimmer than you. Are you OK with overweight people being called names as long as they don't imply moral judgement, so elephant or hippo, maybe?

Stick insect might mean that to a woman who struggles with being overweight and has only experienced the negative sides of that particular situation. But, seriously to compare a woman's body to that of an insect? How is that not incredibly insulting and cruel? Some, but very few, women are extremely slim due to genetics, others due to health conditions, still others because they feel healthier at a low weight. None of these are 'lucky' or necessarily percieve themselves as such, or as attractive, unless they are 'lucky' enough to also have a body shape that fits whatever is the current aesthetic, and to think its OK to demean them by comparing them to an insect because its OK as they are 'lucky' is pure projection. Its not a race to the bottom and you don't uplift one group of women by dragging down another.

@Toddlerteaplease

Bravissimo have lovely models and always have done.

They do, mostly fairly slim but achievable, and quite a few are a bit older too. Bravissimo have always been good at this, I think when they started they had real trouble finding suitable models and put quite a lot of work into it.

I think this is what people mean when they say that they want to see "normal" or "average" women. Bravissimo also show women who aren't models in their bras and do it in a non-porny way (in contrast to snag). A great example.

I like some of the other images from the JL site too, the too small knickers aren't nice but the black lady in the link someone posted above looks incredible whilst being realistic and healthy.

crochetmonkey74 · 21/01/2022 09:08

I like it - I am sick of seeing models who have flat barbie foofs when I definitely do not!

TheVolturi · 21/01/2022 09:34

She's a real woman, it's about fucking time.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/01/2022 09:37

Nothing wrong with the picture.

Slim woman have vulvas that look like those of a plastic doll? Hmm, I don't think mine got that memo. Confused
ExConstance · 21/01/2022 16:08

The knickers don't fit - too tight. Not a good advert for that reason alone.
I think we all want to see models who look a bit like us and as I don't look like her in the knicker department it would not make me want to buy them. The last lot of JL knickers I bought were as a result of DH saying he liked them when we were in the store.

ISpyCobraKai · 21/01/2022 16:27

I'd never look like that no matter what size as I wear knickers that fit!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/01/2022 16:33

What makes her a real woman, as opposed to the other models who are not "real" women?
crochetmonkey74 · 21/01/2022 17:22

Ooh no ispy I didnt mean that. Not connected to her size at all.
I was just saying that often underwear models in that area look very flat and tucked in. (Could be photoshopping etc) I was just approving of a different type

ISpyCobraKai · 21/01/2022 18:58

Lots of women do have flat vulvas without photoshopping though.
After all, they come in all shapes and sizes and most do what they are for, it's not great to read negatives about any.

Thats true, and that's how most underwear has always appeared on that type of body (like most clothing has been modelled on silk body types) My comment was aimed entirely at seeing myself represented.
crochetmonkey74 · 21/01/2022 19:28

Slim not silk

Do you mean the mons pubis as opposed to the vulva?
ISpyCobraKai · 21/01/2022 22:24

Yes, that.
I forget the correct terms, though I know MN don't appreciate fanny!

I didn't even know this was a thing. But then, i remember the time before they invented back fat, hip dips, thigh gaps, and cankles, so I'm probably very out of touch with the latest thing we're meant to feel inadequate about.
CayrolBaaaskin · 21/01/2022 22:38

Good on John Lewis
