This picture is very unflattering - why does John Lewis think it's a good look? I'd probably look even worse in them by the way.

I like the sites that show an item on two models of differing sizes so you can think how you yourself would look in the clothes. I have no issue with clothes on larger models but as I am not that size personally, it means I can’t picture the item on me if the only pic is of a larger model. ‘Real’ people showing how the clothes look is what works for me.

TikTokCat · 16/01/2022 11:16

I think it's great to see a diverse array of women modeling the underwear so well done JL.

On this occasion, the size doesn't look quite right in the photo and the style isn't to everyone's taste. No reason to judge the model or comment on her personal grooming.

I find it quite sad how judgemental we have been conditioned to be of other women.

PizzaDays · 16/01/2022 11:19

No way. I want clothing that makes me look better and covers my insecurities. The ad proves that they wouldn’t, so I wouldn't buy.

Yes use real models, but then make clothing flattering for them (and for those of us who want to buy them).

The issue is not the model, but that it highlights the awful clothing.

It's all about getting us to buy (nothing to do with caring about women). They fail anyway.

PizzaDays · 16/01/2022 11:21

@EinsteinaGogo

Thanks OP - I've just ordered the bra and knickers!!!

I think it's bloody great they are using typical examples of women to demonstrate the products.

I wouldn't have bought the set if I'd seen it on a usual model - everything looks good on them!

Have a browse around the Coralie range - there are some other realistic body shapes modelling.

Well done JL - you literally have my business.

You’ve bought awful unflattering clothing because the advertisers (whose only interest is to get you to buy) used a larger model?

Clearly the advertising works 🤷‍♀️

BestIsWest · 16/01/2022 11:21

Well done JL.

Couchbettato · 16/01/2022 11:22

I can feel the physical pain of that fabric nipping one of my labia when I look at those pictures.

Nothing wrong with the model though, just terrible knickers.

madisonbridges · 16/01/2022 11:29

I don't see the point of this ad. They decide to use an average size model to be inclusive. All good. They then put her in pants that are too small so therefore not flattering. So what is this meant to show? That average size women are too big for good pants? That average sized people don't look good in nice pants? This is not going to encourage people to buy these pants and sales figures might indicate to the company that average sized people aren't good models for pants. So no more average sized models.
For goodness sake, isn't it common sense to put models in clothes that fit and flatter. And by the way, I don't even think shes average size.

Zeflyinghelmetandzevetcelery · 16/01/2022 11:30

I love that the model is a normal body shape. I was shopping the online sale of my favourite shop last night and struggling to imagine what the clothes, beautifully draped over a stick thin model, would look like over my size 14 bust. In the end I didn't order 3 of the blouses I liked because it's a hassle to return things that look good on the very tall thin models but end up looking frumpy and unflattering on me.

To answer the question, I really like those pants and my younger self would have bought them. My mid 50s self is more a cotton midi sort of woman.

celiamary · 16/01/2022 11:35

They look to me to be the wrong size, I don't like the way it cuts across the buttock. VPL is likely.
No thanks.

2022HowDoYouDo · 16/01/2022 11:35

Don't mind the model but don't like the pants, not enough gusset for my liking.

ZoeTheThornyDevil · 16/01/2022 11:40

In the sort-of defence of underwear retailers and modelling, I think there are actually obscenity rules about showing pubic hair, which means that all pictures of see-thru knickers have to be edited or carefully blocked re: model's pose.

LublinToDublin · 16/01/2022 11:40

@Starryskiesinthesky

I'm all for using models of all shapes and sizes but to me they look too small and a horrible fit.

EinsteinaGogo · 16/01/2022 11:41

@PizzaDays

I wouldn't have come across the underwear if I hadn't have clicked on the post.

As i did, I browsed around the other photos of models demonstrating the range, and it highlighted that this underwear can suit a wide range shapes.

Had they all been pictured on the frequent Victoria's Secret-esque models, as a 5'4" size 14-16, I would have flicked on by as I wouldn't have thought I could wear them.

So yes - seeing products on 'women like me' was very inspiring 🙂

EinsteinaGogo · 16/01/2022 11:47

It's worth pointing out, there are hundreds of pictures of models with a variety of shapes advertising underwear on the John Lewis website.

The OP has selected a particular contentious example where the pants don't fit for effect.

I don't know what people want, too thin and she isn't right too fat and it's unflattering and it's not right. This is how that woman looks in pants this Is what a lot of women look like in pants so do we want a proper representation or the fantasy ?

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2022 12:00

@melissasummerfield I'm also a bit overweight. But there was one where the model was wearing a suspender belt type of thing. Omg it actually turned my stomach.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2022 12:01

Bravissimo have lovely models and always have done.

I could understand that IF the clothes looked flattering, but they don’t.
MrsSkylerWhite · 16/01/2022 12:02

Much prefer to see clothes on average looking women, too.
Unfortunately, they appear to be a size too small for the model. They look uncomfortable.

Don’t care what the model looks like. I want to see clothes that look good on whichever model (of whichever size) is modelling them.
coogee · 16/01/2022 12:05

I think most of us would like to see models used that resemble ourselves.

I’d rather have the “fantasy” as it is closer to how I and a lot of other women look.

For models to be shown wearing pants that fit them would be a good start.

If a "lot of women look like [this] in pants" then I have to question why so many women are wearing pants that are too small for them.

Snowisfalling33 · 16/01/2022 12:13

I'm completely in favour of models with normal bodies being used but those knickers are too small for her. Why have they done that??

Oldraver · 16/01/2022 12:15

I'll stick with my Oddballs thanks (cotton, high waisted, no elastic round the legs)

But yes she does need s bigger size
