This picture is very unflattering - why does John Lewis think it's a good look? I'd probably look even worse in them by the way.

@ChiefInspectorParker

No. They look too small and don’t flatter the model.
This

She's beautiful but they should have used this model for different underwear. And by this I don't mean big or unsightly Hmm I think the shape looks good on her

I just think women look so weird without pubes! Unpopular opinion I know. It just looks 'blank' to me. My first thought was deep discomfort at looking at a prepubescent crotch 
It’s not a prepubescent crotch. It’s a woman without public hair.

For the record I have a full bush. I just really hate the way people somehow think a woman removing her pubic hair suddenly turns her into a child or that those who have a preference for that are somehow attracted to children. It’s a horrible attitude.

I think the issue with the pubic hair is that they've clearly been airbrushed out, because they are (of course) offensive, un -feminine, undesirable.....the list goes on. So no great win for Women with that photo.

liveforsummer · 16/01/2022 10:19

It's a bit odd, i completely approve of using a plus sized 'real' model but my guess is these pants come up small, they certainly don't fit the model well and they don't go past a size 18.

KiloWhat · 16/01/2022 10:19

Stop judging women by their pubic hair. It's weird.

Floydthebarber · 16/01/2022 10:23

Absolutely. I have nothing against very slim models, clothes do look better 'advertised' on thin bodies. But I love that places are using different body sizes, I can picture how I would look in the outfits.

KatherineJaneway · 16/01/2022 10:23

I don't like the photo simply because it looks like they've put her in a size smaller than she should be, so it looks uncomfortable.

melissasummerfield · 16/01/2022 10:31

@Toddlerteaplease

Better than the snag adverts. I'm all for body positivity, but don't think that extremely obese models should be used, in the same way that we would be horrified if an anorexic model was used.
So glad its not just me that thinks this! I am fat btw but absolutely hate these adverts!
DietrichandDiMaggio · 16/01/2022 10:36

@MrsLargeEmbodied

you normally get tall very thin models, or size 14 or 16 for the large sizes if you ask to look at them in particular. it is very hard to judge
Surely that model IS about a size 14?
elelel · 16/01/2022 10:38

No, the issue for everyone that commented on this thread was that it 'infantilises' women and makes them look 'pre pubescent'

I take your point about airbrushing, Tobit let's not pretend that's what anyone who posted re lack of public hair was talking about.

liveforsummer · 16/01/2022 10:39

If she's tall she could easily be a 16 vegging on an 18 and seeing that's the largest size of pants that's what I find odd abbot this particular example. The pants are likely too small for her because they don't have a bigger size to give her

WaltzingToWalsingham · 16/01/2022 10:40

She's very attractive, but she does look overweight. I don't think it's any better to use overweight models than it is to use underweight ones. One of the reasons that we have so many overweight and obese people in this country, is that people see others of the same size and larger, and think that their size is ok because Brenda next door is bigger. This type of advert contributes towards the normalisation of being fat, and that's not a good thing.

Wtf this isn't a thread about judging the models body. It's about the pants.
NYnewstart · 16/01/2022 10:43

@whenwillthemadnessend

I like the larger lady but prefer the non see through ones to be better on her. If was slim I cant see me buying them with that pic. And as I'm not slim and also have c section scar I definitely won't be buying them.
Exactly this.

It’s the see throughness.

And tbh it may be real in one way with the stomach overhang but the fact she is shaved still doesn’t make it really real!

borntobequiet · 16/01/2022 10:49

Knickers are definitely too small. Model is a normal looking woman, which is nice.

That's not what I was talking about. Hth.
WaltzingToWalsingham · 16/01/2022 10:50

@KiloWhat I think you'll find it is. In OP's second post, she states, "As to what is the point of this post, it was to encourage discussion on how female bodies are portrayed."
But if you want my opinion on the pants: no I wouldn't buy them because I dont like underwear made of synthetic materials.

astoundedgoat · 16/01/2022 10:55

I think it’s brilliant when retailers take the time and money to photograph several different body types in their clothing. It’s really helpful, which is what these pics are supposed to be.

Forrandomposts · 16/01/2022 11:00

Plenty of people are shaved with an overhang! I think it's wonderful.

How biz are is the world that we've been taught to dislike pictures like this. It's just a woman, it's just her body, it's just knickers.

foxgoosefinch · 16/01/2022 11:00

@borntobequiet

This - the model is nice to see, the knickers less so. Too tight and look uncomfortable. But then I like cotton bikinis, and though I have lots of pretty lingerie as well for special occasions, mesh synthetic knickers are never exactly nice to wear compared to cotton.
user1641832968632486258 · 16/01/2022 11:01

They're quite obviously too small for her. The same style on a slightly smaller size model who clearly has the benefit of the correct size is more flattering - doesn't dig in at the sides, doesn't look like it will all bunch up the moment she moves.

What a strange choice. As a pp has said, why would you use a model who needs a size that you don't stock for the item you're trying to sell?!

Why doesn't JL state what size the model is wearing and her height like other retailers? (Or if they do, where? I can't see that info).

Macaroni46 · 16/01/2022 11:02

Hardly a larger lady! Think the picture is fine but agree the pants look a size too small.

Yes, ordinarily I'd agree. But all the models chosen should actually fit the clothes sizes available for that product.

I don't see how it is helpful to show someone for whom your largest available size is too small (and also not to share what size each model is wearing to help customers assess if it's right for them).

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 16/01/2022 11:04

I don't judge shops that use thin/slim models but I think that the majority of retailers use heavily photoshopped photos to create an unrealistic image of what the ideal woman looks like, which is not good for women generally. That includes shape, skin tone and texture.

onedayoranother · 16/01/2022 11:06

No, not because of the model but because they look scratchy and uncomfortable!
I like seeing women with figures closer to mine - better idea of how it will look in me, though that doesn't really come in to it with pants as I'm comfort over style with those!

Yes

I look very similar to her (probably I’m a bit fatter) and i have an overhang

Like others I wouldn’t buy the see through knickers, but at least i can see how they would look
