No buy or low buy 2022

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 15:57

Ive just made my final purchase of 2021.
I want to have a "no buy" year with regards to clothes.
But I'm wondering if I should make it a "low buy" so I don't feel too restricted and then rebel against myself.
I could give myself a limit to the number of purchases for 2022 say 12 items maximum for the year?

Anybody done this and have tips for avoiding failure on the challenge.

Sounds like everyone doing well.

Week 2 and still no buy. Been far too busy with work to even consider browsing so that's helping.

I'm tracking my wardrobe use on the style app which is marvellously geeky. What if I made a deal with myself to get rid of anything not worn in 2022? Shock

Have you done the coat hanger thing? Where you turn them all the wrong way round and then when you wear something, you turn the hanger the right way round. So anything with the backwards hanger after a certain length of time you have to get rid of!
GranolaHolmes · 15/01/2022 17:02

I haven't no but have heard of it. I'm not sure I'm organised enough for that and sometimes I like to just dress up to make outfits then put them back in the wardrobe, so I'd be getting confused which went on which hangers I think. I think I kind of know which items just hang in the wardrobe looking pretty but don't get worn. Sad

Uh oh, I fell off the wagon.

First purchase made from my 12.

In my defence it was well thought out and something I sorely missed this winter. A maxi length water resistant puffer jacket on sale in the right colour and fit and size after lots of research and comparisons.

I had hoped to wait until the end of January but got pushed by the '1 left in stock' note.

Still may get returned if it doesn't hit the mark perfectly but looks like I'm off the starting blocks a bit earlier than I'd hoped. Confused

I've been a bit obsessed with vlogs on this and they all say that if you fall off the wagon, just move on (or return it if you can do without it?) and just get back on the wagon! One purchase is probably a lot better than usual when January sales are on, (or maybe that's just me Blush)

I've sort of cheated a little bit...but not too bad. I have sold my kindle and then wanted things to read...so I'm allowing myself up to £10 of secondhand books. It's cheaper than Netflix which I've cancelled, so I'm justifying it that way. I've also bought some reusable cotton pads which I was running low on and I reasoned that it was better than buying disposable ones. Also needed new pants this month as the elastic went in mine. So actually have spent circa £50 this month when it was meant to be no spend/no buy. Better than it could be (and better than usual by far) so I'm just KOKO really

GranolaHolmes · 17/01/2022 12:38

It's for sure an improvement on usual January sales behaviour.

It may not be a keeper but let's see.

I suppose my fear is that I will end up getting through my 12 item allowance too quickly.

OP posts:
SarahJessicaParkin · 17/01/2022 12:49

I'm trying to put into savings what I don't spend and I've managed to put I think £400 in this month, which for me is unheard of Blush. I'm a spend it till it's gone kind of gal unfortunately. So really pleased with that

GranolaHolmes · 17/01/2022 13:23

Yes, me too. I have to hide my money from myself so use 'spaces' in my bank account to do that. Literally can't sit on it.

Ok so genuinely properly love the puffer coat.
Joy sparking all over the place.
It's a keeper for sure.

I've bought and worn 3 things from my 22 for 22. But I've ordered 2 things that I think will fill a gap but because from USA won't arrive for ages. My easiest time of year not to buy is the summer tbh as I just wear shorts and a tee. But my resolve is firm

Softpebbles · 18/01/2022 11:23

I know you are on no spend but I can really recommend this book:

www.caitflanders.com/the-year-of-less/#:~:text=The%20Year%20of%20Less%20documents%20Cait%27s%20life%20for,consume%20less%20of%20many%20other%20things%20besides%20shopping.

To be fair I read it a year ago and I have just noticed old habits have started to creep in so I may reread it as a reminder.

GranolaHolmes · 18/01/2022 11:33

I do aspire to a NO buy year but as we've just moved house and have a house renovation project I know 2022 is not going to be that year.

I would love to get to the point that the house is done if that's possible.

Will add the book to my reading list to come back to though.

I bought some antiperspirant, lipbalm and showegel (all essentials)

I saw some nice things on the Uniqlo website but couldn't find them instore so didn't buy anything there .

I'm making notes in my desk diary of any spends

Rocket1982 · 22/01/2022 21:21

I am doing a no buy year for clothes. I bought a pair of cords on eBay last week. I have told myself it doesn't count as I bought a pair (same colour) from Fat Face in the December sale and I preferred the ebay ones so returned the Fat Face ones (net zero buy). Can't have the same excuse for any other temptation...

SocksAndTheCity · 22/01/2022 23:33

After doing really well so far and only buying a couple of bits I needed for the gym, I finally cracked this morning when I got an email giving me an extra 20% off the sale prices if I bought two sale items at Tracey Neuls. Now I have two pairs of beautiful shoes winging their way over Confused.

I am starting again immediately, and hopefully I'll have a bit more luck now the sales are winding up (I don't tend to like Spring clothes that much, fortunately Smile). I intend to spend an hour tomorrow unsubscribing to all the rest of the marketing emails that I kept because I like the shops.

GranolaHolmes · 22/01/2022 23:49

Yeah the unsubscribing is a good plan.
I tend to go down rabbit holes of advertising on social media and newsletters so these are obvious triggers.
When I'm busy I don't have the time to even look at social media but I've noticed this last week I've been constantly adding to my wish list because I'm home isolating.
My isolation period restarted today too so going to have to find something to distract me for the next week.

I’ve been rubbish. Really rubbish.

Went to Dublin to my dads house for ten days. Went to a shop I like and bought a jumper, a hoodie, a fleece jacket and a long sleeved white tshirt. Then I bought pjs and a dressing gown from Tesco.

Have been trying to buy a particular facial mist which was constantly out of stock but managed to nab one. Then a limited edition of a different facial spray launched and I bought four. One for me and one each for my sisters.

I did manage to avoid buying books or magazines going through the airport which was a win as I normally can’t resist.

But I basically failed no buy January. Or one buy January. Or even 12 items in 2022!

Need to refocus!

GranolaHolmes · 23/01/2022 11:59

Back on the horse peridot1.

But you don't need a new horse. Your old one will do just fine. Wink

I just have to say how the 12 purchases a year has already impacted my shopping! I am SOOO much more conscious now of any purchases because it takes from my precious 12. I got my husband to join the challange as well and it's the same for him!

I really urge everyone to consider it!

GranolaHolmes · 24/01/2022 10:25

I agree.
I'm not going to waste the opportunity on something that isn't quite right and I'm so pleased with my January purchase that I want every purchase to feel that special.

DuchessMinnie · 24/01/2022 21:33

Doing really well- 24 days and not a single item of clothing bought. I have done this twice before- when I was 28 to buy a little shared ownership flat and then again in 2020, when I lasted 4 months and had money in the bank at the end of the month.

I adore clothes, bags, jewellery, all of it. But I have enough stuff and I need to build up my savings and reduce my carbon footprint.

Glad there are a few of us, we can encourage each other.

GranolaHolmes · 24/01/2022 23:28

Good work. I'm hoping my resolve will strengthen with practise.

God, I have one pair of Tracey Neuls - the most amazing loafers. Fortunately shipping is very very expensive to my place of residence...
Bex000 · 25/01/2022 08:58

I am on a low buy having moved house 4 times in 5 years I realised just how much crap that I never wear and have accumulated.
Therefore I have depoped all my early 30s nightclub dresses and instead of buying stuff have got an LK Bennett rental subscription so a never ending supply of new clothes that get returned and swapped. Bearing in mind the fortune dry cleaning costs this works out at pretty good value!

moimichme · 28/01/2022 20:55

I've been quite tempted this week with some gifts with purchase and sales, but held firm. It helps that I have not been paid since mid December. Just a few more days (31st).
