No buy or low buy 2022

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 15:57

Ive just made my final purchase of 2021.
I want to have a "no buy" year with regards to clothes.
But I'm wondering if I should make it a "low buy" so I don't feel too restricted and then rebel against myself.
I could give myself a limit to the number of purchases for 2022 say 12 items maximum for the year?

Anybody done this and have tips for avoiding failure on the challenge.

I thought I’d crack once January was over but still going strong!

Peridot1 · 03/02/2022 08:23

Well I am back on the old horse @GranolaHolmes!

Haven’t bought anything since my Dublin blitz.

Have also sorted out a few skin care bits I won’t use to sell or pass on to my sisters.

Am in midst of sorting out my bedroom so a big clear out is planned. I suspect I will find lots of things I’d forgotten I had.

I did Dry January (although it was damp rather than dry!) but saved some money doing that and am going to buy some nice pictures etc for my bedroom. We moved house just over a year ago and I’d like to get my bedroom sorted properly. I have a walk in wardrobe which is a complete dumping ground.

MyGPsurgeryisUseless · 03/02/2022 11:05

Oh no I wish I’d seen this earlier for a bit of encouragement…

I’m trying to do a no buy but then I’ve ended up buying!

I am in the process of having a massive sort out and found things I forgot I even owned! I’ve also sorted a pile to sell.

Maybe I should aim for low buy not no buy so I don’t have a blow out like I did!

I’ve sorted out my skin care and I did throw away lots of old make up and I did spend £15 on some new skin care

Ah I know we are already a month in but may I join? I'm trying to save more (bathroom refurbishment looming later in the year) and to buy more intentionally.

I made a shopping list at the start of the year which tackled the gaps in my wardrobe and I've decided to only buy from it this year. Skincare - I can replace existing products. Books - I'm using the local library which is actually amazing. They can order any book you want

I also have one in, two out rule as I'm trying to reduce the overall amount

My shopping list includes

Winter coat
High-end scarf to go with it (no more cheap h&m scarves)
Leather loafers
2 new bras. I desperately need this - I only have one that fits me properly, and two others which are almost at the end of their lives
Sports bra
Comfy but smart black work trousers
A pair of relaxed jeans in dark blue - my old ones have just worn through
Few new summer tops - either strappy or sleeveless. Up to 3, I'd say. If we are heading towards a hot summer, these would be crucial. I have too many tops but almost none for really hot weather
New birkenstocks, if this is the year my old ones finally give in

That's it! I've bought the coat and scarf in January sales and I love them.

Inthesameboatatmo · 03/02/2022 16:20

Didn't buy anything in Jan. As soon as Feb comes I've bought a uniqlo coat ffs it is in the sale though .
Am back on the no buy wagon for this month.

GranolaHolmes · 03/02/2022 16:45

@Pigtailsandall Your wish list is very similar to mine.

So my January purchase was the coat which I'm really pleased with as it's getting plenty of use already.

I'm not sure February will have any purchases from my list. Let's see.

The more the merrier @Pigtailsandall!

I think I need some new bras but am going to wait until I have a sort out.

Pigtailsandall · 04/02/2022 22:17

I'm very pleased with myself - I went shopping today and got my toddler a few pair of joggers and a pair of jeans (kids seem to only grow in overnight spurts) plus some socks and a book for the said kid. I do have a weakness for too many kids books but we do read a lot so we get a lot of value from them.

I also bought picture frames for some prints I've had for ages - this weekend I'm finally hanging them up - but thats it! I browsed at a few shops but got nada for myself.

OldLadyInPolyester · 05/02/2022 08:21

Bit late to the party here but I'm also trying to do 'low buy' and my new years resolution was to only buy second hand clothes (except underwear!).

January has been pretty good. I did get a John Lewis voucher for Christmas so I spent that on slippers, socks and earphones for running. I then bought a running bum bag and a couple of nail varnishes because I forgot myself. Otherwise it's just been buying birthday presents for other people.

I am in desperate need of new bras though. I have two everyday ones I wear in rotation. They're pretty gross and thread bare now 🙈. Possible Feb purchase!

TheTeaFairy · 05/02/2022 15:40

@GranolaHolmes would you mind sharing which puffa you bought? It sounds just like the elusive one I've been searching for... 🙏🌞

TheTeaFairy · 05/02/2022 15:41

Have been lurking but am also aiming for the (maximum) 12 in 22. Nothing so far! 😊

Mumwithbaggage · 05/02/2022 16:57

I gave up my full time teaching job in December and am currently earning less while I get set up in my new working life - January was particularly bad,as I knew it would be. Great opportunity to stop buying stuff - my wardrobe is bulging!

Have bought nothing in January which is very unusual for me.

36 days down so 10% of the year done with no purchases. I probably will allow myself 12 items throughout the year but so far I am resisting and have found lovely things in my wardrobe to rediscover.

TheTeaFairy · 06/02/2022 13:29

Thank you so much @GranolaHolmes - that's a great coat! Smile

Pigtailsandall · 06/02/2022 20:29

Ok, I bought Sainsbury's girlfriend jeans in black acid wash and I really like them. I'd heard great things about them and the feel very soft and comfortable but just a little bit edgy. Still within my original and intended list, which I'm very happy about. But at this rate I'll do all my purchases within the first quarter of the year.

Nomorefuckstogive · 08/02/2022 20:51

I bought a rather pricy sweatshirt, that I’d had my eye on for ages. It was almost a third off and I LOVE it. Then I saw a perfect dress for work in my size - last one left and £9 (reduced from £45!) That’s it though. No more. I’m justifying, as I had money for Christmas, so used that. Back on the horse.

Peridot1 · 09/02/2022 08:10

Both sound like bargains @Nomorefuckstogive. Love a bargain!

I’m going well. Although have a few items in my Cult Beauty basket. Which I don’t need. And aren’t bargains. So they are staying there for now.

IvorCutler · 09/02/2022 11:24

It’s gone to pot for me this month. I’ve returned what I’ve bought so far but I feel guilty about that too (environmental impact). I have trainers, shirts and a pair of jeans on the way… it’s my birthday soon and I’ve tried to justify it this way. I really hope to do better next month.

moimichme · 09/02/2022 19:51

If it makes you feel any better, IvorCutler, I've bought some beauty products for myself along with DH for Valentine's Day / my birthday this month. We also had some rubbish family news so that may have contributed to my spending. Sad Will all get used, but it wasn't a necessary purchase. But tomorrow is another day, right? Being more mindful will at least help!

lindyloo57 · 09/02/2022 20:47

I worry if I do the coat hanger thing, half of my wardrobe will be gone, I have ten cardigans the short style you find in m&s, which I haven't worn for 5 years since I finish working, but can't part with them, telling myself i might wear them when I am older, I'm 61

GranolaHolmes · 11/02/2022 21:31

@lindyloo57 I used to have the same cardigan habit. It must be a thing.

OP posts:
MadeinSW3 · 11/02/2022 21:40

I cracked at the Zara new in spring colours

lindyloo57 · 11/02/2022 21:45

@GranolaHolmes do you think that style is , I want to say old fashion, but should say not current, don't want to upset anyone why loves this style.

GranolaHolmes · 12/02/2022 18:31

@lindyloo57 it was my go to when I was overweight and wore dresses but hated my arms. I don't wear the short cardigans now as I find them kind of ageing. I don't mind a long chunky cardigan though.

I have kept one short grey m&s cardigan but I haven't worn it for a long time now, maybe 3 years.
