No buy or low buy 2022

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 15:57

Ive just made my final purchase of 2021.
I want to have a "no buy" year with regards to clothes.
But I'm wondering if I should make it a "low buy" so I don't feel too restricted and then rebel against myself.
I could give myself a limit to the number of purchases for 2022 say 12 items maximum for the year?

Anybody done this and have tips for avoiding failure on the challenge.

I’m in. Low buy for me. I tried to do no buy from August to December this year but caught Covid in October and fell off the wagon. I think I’ll allow myself second hand and something lovely for my birthday.

PoshPyjamas · 01/01/2022 22:55

I’m in! Though I keep trying no buys and failing - but something's got to give. I have been in a similar position before and ended up in serious debt and I don’t want to be back there. Credit card debt has been slowly creeping up over the last few years, and it needs to stop. Cant decide between a low buy or no buy though.

Inthesameboatatmo · 02/01/2022 12:51

I didn't spend anything yesterday, so I'm happy with myself lol.

Peridot1 · 02/01/2022 13:07

Same here @Inthesameboatatmo!

Inthesameboatatmo · 02/01/2022 13:55

@Peridot1. Let's hope it continues for both of us

I decluttered my make up stash last night.
Most of it purchased pre pandemic so needed binning.

Make up lasts far longer than two years. I understand getting rid of things you will never use but there’s no reason to get rid of products you use just because they’re two years old.

Nomorefuckstogive · 02/01/2022 14:44

I’m in. I ordered 2 dresses in the sales and am thinking I don’t really need them. I’m a real sucker for a discount. It has to stop!

GemmaRuby · 02/01/2022 14:49

12 items is a good allowance I think.
Is that 12 new items? Just thinking you could sneak in a few ebay items if you start to feel the shopping itch.
Last year I got a beautiful leather handbag and a shearling jacket from eBay.. the bidding does get a bit addictive though - I should just stop buying things.

I have the 3 month rule on mascara and I will never buy one that's on a display unsealed .
Otherwise it's only if they look like the texture has changed , split , or smells off .

My BodyShop Beech lip liner pre-dates my wedding and I celebrated 25 years in 2020 !

About 11 years ago I did a no buy year (apart from knickers, tights and one going out dress), it was actually very easy but then I got to the end of the year and thought why on earth did I actually do it?

Girlintheframe · 02/01/2022 23:46

Ooh nearly got sucked into the Zara sale but resisted.
Tbh there is nothing I actually need but plenty I would like. Clothes and skin care are my Achilles heel. My friend likes jewelry but it doesn't interest me in the slightest. Funny how we all have our 'thing'.

Thats quite an achievement!

I kept make up pencils as I could just sharpen them.
The rest was old and mucky/dried out etc.

I’m in too - this is a great idea!

I’m going to do low but to leave a bit of room for things I actually need, but it should be very little. I filled a lot of gaps in my wardrobe during lockdown as the sales were so good (and I was quite bored).

I’ve also recently done a clear out of make up and got rid of some things that were at much as 20 years old! And I’ve been using up all the various forgotten creams etc over the last few months, so it’s so nice to finally only have what I need. I can’t bear the clutter and waste of beauty stuff I don’t need.

So the only things I can imagine buying this year are the perfect jeans (the holy grail of shopping for me… I live in hope), and maybe a mascara or treat bath bomb.

OublietteBravo · 03/01/2022 00:13

I’m going to try and make it through January without buying any clothes (so far, so good). After that, I’ll allow myself to spend any profit I spend from selling clothes I don’t wear any more. And I’ll probably make a list of permitted items too - for example I will need new trainers (for exercising) at some point.

Pendolino · 03/01/2022 00:16

Second hand only for me. I’ve just stocked up on new knickers and socks so have no excuse to buy anything new!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/01/2022 00:34

I’m trying to do no-spend January. I don’t want to do it for longer than that!

readingismycardio · 03/01/2022 10:20

Low and quality buy here. I only want to buy 1 item a month but amazing quality (this includes underwear). I (unfortunately) already bought the item(s) for january, some beautiful panties.

Daisy829 · 03/01/2022 10:31

No buy for me. I have so many clothes I just need to fit into them again so I’m focused on that. I’ve also started a list of items I’ve considered buying because they were cheap but held off getting. It’s about £200 already. Crazy
I am in the market for a new handbag…I’m always searching for the holy grail of bags so I just have one perfect one but I haven’t found it yet.

Peridot1 · 03/01/2022 12:21

I almost succumbed yesterday! Just finished a book I really enjoyed and there is a sequel. I was very tempted. DH persuaded me to put it on my Amazon wish list for my birthday instead.

Daisy829 · 03/01/2022 14:31

@Peridot1 what book was it? I love reading!

Peridot1 · 03/01/2022 14:47

I’m not sure I should enable you @Daisy829! Grin

It was The Salt Path by Raynor Winn. A friend recommended it a few years ago and I put it on my Amazon wish list and DH finally bought it this year. I hadn’t gotten around to buying it myself.

CalmConfident · 03/01/2022 15:04

I am in for low buy and also 2nd hand. I have been mostly using vinted recently and got some lovely things, plus if my fitness kick goes well I will be able to wear more of the clothes I already own!

Daisy829 · 03/01/2022 15:10

Oh fab thanks I’ll have a look. Not heard of that one & I like books that run in a series.

jay55 · 03/01/2022 15:43

I've ordered some boots in the sales. But am aiming for underwear only, until (if?) we go back to the office.
