No buy or low buy 2022

GranolaHolmes · 31/12/2021 15:57

Ive just made my final purchase of 2021.
I want to have a "no buy" year with regards to clothes.
But I'm wondering if I should make it a "low buy" so I don't feel too restricted and then rebel against myself.
I could give myself a limit to the number of purchases for 2022 say 12 items maximum for the year?

Anybody done this and have tips for avoiding failure on the challenge.

@OublietteBravo great willpower! Did DH go wild in the sales?

NeedWineNow · 05/01/2022 22:24

I'd like to join you all if I may. I got a few bits in the sales but nowhere next as much as I have done in the past. I'm trying to stop the impulse buys and buying things just because they're cheap. And for the three dresses I got in the sales I had another look at my wardrobe and put 6 more in the charity bag (or I might try selling them on Vinted).

I will need some new ballet shoes (proper dance shoes, not ballet pumps) and possibly some new sandals to go with a dress for a wedding later in the year but I'm hoping that's about it. Whether I will hold out with limited buying is another matter Grin

rosiebl · 05/01/2022 22:33

So glad I found this thread. Thought I was alone. I'm doing no clothing or shoes buy 2022, but allowed second hand if desperate. So far so good!

thebear1 · 06/01/2022 07:35

I will join in to as I really don't need anything, my wardrobe has something in it for most occasions. So I am going to set myself the challenge of a low buy, at most 12 items of clothing and no books until I have read the very many I have downloaded but not read. About 15!

MesBob · 06/01/2022 08:34

I'm in as well! I'm sure I could survive several years! We are hoping to make up for lost time and attend some festivals this summer. So my only exception will be if we decide to get group T-shirts printed for any of the festivals. I've also been reading the thread about not saving things for best (not sure how to link on my phone). I think wearing different things from my wardrobe will help me resist temptation!! Good luck - we can do this!!

Sooverthemill · 06/01/2022 10:24

@OublietteBravo 😂

Peridot1 · 06/01/2022 12:47

@thebear1 - if it makes you feel any better I have over 100 unread books on my kindle. And quite a lot of actual books too!

mansaemansae · 06/01/2022 18:21

Totally skint this month so was already planning to not spend on anything other than food, fuel and debt. Think I'll push onto the rest of the year as well. Got a couple of things identified that we really need so that can be my motivation (new fence yay so exciting)

Dancingonmoonlight · 06/01/2022 23:59

I'm going to join too please.

We are spending everything we earn and have absolutely no savings. I spend a couple of hundred every single month on clothes that I can't afford. I bought some trainers recently and spent approx 300 in online sales, I kept 50 worth of clothes and returned the rest.

I think I have to do a no spend because I will otherwise keep looking at clothes online. Its a habit I have to stop completely. I know myself well enough to know that if I allow myself to buy one item a month, I will buy three or four items with the intention of keeping one and I'll start agonizing about them and will keep at least two items.

I am going to start culling my wardrobe this weekend too. Its full of clothes I haven't ever worn or haven't worn in years.
I'd like if I could sell some online but I don't know how to sell on eBay. A couple of years ago I put some barely worn Hush dresses up on Market Place and they are still there every time I open it up!

Sooverthemill · 07/01/2022 07:20

@Peridot1 me too! I've joined #beatthebacklog on Twitter
@Dancingonmoonlight basically it's one step at a time. Selling on eBay is easy, I made £3k last year selling off clothes I no longer wear. Few were high end, most high street. EBay has an app that takes you through how to set up a sale step by step. You need good photos in day light. I so buy it now and use eBay suggested price and add £4 postage for almost everything unless it's heavy. I have a ton of winter things to list now and you've reminded me!

JustJam4Tea · 07/01/2022 07:27

I did this 3 years ago. I was buying a lot on line and realised I was spending a lot of time sending stuff back. I was also frittering money shopping at lunchtime.

I did a bit of a wardrobe clear out ( not a major one) and realised that a lot of stuff I wasn’t wearing.

We also had a financial wake up call with dh losing his job.

I went cold Turkey, didn’t buy anything for a year except a new pair of trainers for running/walking and underwear. It extended into other areas of life too, using up food in cupboards, meal planning, swapping providers, getting shoes repaired, clothes repaired….things mended rather than buying new.

It was no hardship. And I was shocked by how much healthier my bank balance was, I started tracking what I spent too,

I’m going to do it again as I now want to retire early…and a bit of extra savings will help.

Unsubscribe from all email alerts and offers.

Do something else with your lunchtime….other than shop. Read a book rather than browse shopping sites.

ShangPie · 07/01/2022 09:19

@Dancingonmoonlight For savings, I do a thing called “paying yourself first” which means that I pay a set amount into my savings on payday rather than waiting to see what’s left to save at the end of the month. It takes a month or two to work out the right amount, and you can always take some out if you need it, but I find that once the money is put away I just don’t want to take it out for something frivolous. Might be worth a try!

Also, you can try selling on Vinted and Depop as well as eBay. I’d be interested to hear from people who sell on all these platforms to see the pros and cons of each.

Sooverthemill · 07/01/2022 09:57

@ShangPie do a search, there was a thread this year ( summer?) about the pros and cons of each

OublietteBravo · 07/01/2022 15:14

I’ve just been through my email unsubscribing from mailing lists. I’ve definitely been tempted by a few bits and pieces, but so far I’ve resisted! Hopefully it’ll be easier next week once I’m back at work with less time to browse.

I do not need any new clothes. I do not need any new clothes. I do not need any new clothes. Grin

ExConstance · 07/01/2022 15:30

I'm not buying at the moment as I will retire in August and will need a different sort of wardrobe then - less clothes, probably more expensive.
I will be concentrating on finding new homes for my old stuff until then.

BirdFriday · 08/01/2022 00:41

I'm joining!

Will be tough as I have minimal willpower around buying clothes but buying off eBay and really sorting my wardrobe was my lockdown hobby so I really don't need anything for at least this year.

But I'll start with January and see how I go. Anything I don't buy is a win I reckon!

Already tempted and resisted a gorgeous second hand dress on eBay that I know would look great on me. I need to avoid places where I see clothes (because then I always find something I want) and its bit awkward as selling on eBay at mo to gain some room in my packed wardrobes!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/01/2022 01:24

I bought bras , I did a cull of the ones that were getting ropey or the pokey wire .( I will class underwear as essential like soap and toothpaste)

And some shampoo and showergel for DS and DH

Doing well so far !

GranolaHolmes · 08/01/2022 13:50

Well week 1 has been fine. No clothes purchases.

Maybe because I had some things arriving that I ordered at the end of December so I haven't been craving any newness yet.

Also feeling pretty broke after Christmas so don't have any money to spend anyway.

On track so far.

I recommend buy less, wear more, buy better. Started doing this a couple of years ago & I only realised how well it worked last year. Can list the actual clothing items I bought last year - 10 inclusive of underwear. Buy better doesn't mean spending more - for me it has been the opposite - I just spend a lot of time considering whether I need something, will wear it & whether I can find a better option elsewhere. I was helped hugely by fashion styles last year - generally not tempted by endless tent dresses or cropped wide jeans, but I am at last somehow managing to resist my knitwear obsession.

Begonias · 08/01/2022 14:10

I'm trying to do a low buy instead of no buy. So far I haven't bought anything and I am sticking to my budget. This year I am all about building my savings, I've done some calculations and if I stick to it I'll be a few thousand pounds better off in December 🤞🏼

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/01/2022 01:40

I'm watching QVC there's a special offer on Colour Wow
I am talking myself out of it 70 you know you're never going to straighten or blow dry your hair , don't you ?

Bussinbussin · 14/01/2022 01:56

I've just found this thread and am in!

This year my commitment to myself is to only shop if an essential, frequently used item needs replacing.

Luisamadrigal1 · 14/01/2022 08:47

I'm doing this. Actually I'm trying a no buy / low spend year for everything this year as I'm saving.

Only thing I have bought this tear so far, other than groceries and petrol etc, is some organic cotton pants as I got rid of loads of everyday knickers and only had three pairs left which wasn't enough. So I've bought some more.

I'm allowing myself if needed, underwear replacements and sportswear replacements. But don't think I'll need to do this.

ShangPie · 14/01/2022 14:51

I caved and bought some jeans in a charity shop while visiting a new town Blush

They were ‘second pair half price’ so I got two pairs of M&S and Toast jeans for £8. The grey Toast pair filled a wardrobe gap, and the M&S ones will replace an old dark denim pair which have gone a bit saggy.

I know I’m justifying it to myself, but Toast do an excellent swapping system called ‘Toast Circle’ where you can drop off old items to a few stores and get a token for another second hand item dropped off by another customer. Some Toast items are perfect fits and will be worn forever, while others just don’t suit, so I often take a charity shop gamble as I know I can rehome it and potentially upgrade. In the past, I’ve swapped dresses for wool sweaters, jeans, etc. like a sustainable seasonal hire service Grin (assuming you like their look and fit - not everyone does)
