What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

I love my golden goose trainers, I know they are divisive but they are so comfortable

Gonnagetgoing · 30/12/2021 12:48

@AuntieDolly

Who do you think is coolest - Amanda or Liz?
@AuntieDolly - Amanda looks too try hard. Liz looks a bit of a scruff. Julia looks the best and I liked some of Meg’s style too.

What’s the big deal with wearing sunglasses in winter? For those of us with pale eyes, the slightest hint of winter sunshine means that they’re necessary, especially when driving Confused

This is a great question. Liz is obviously infinitely cooler. However, if you just saw Amanda and didn't know her to be the queen of try-hard passive aggression, she would probably look cool.
@allfurcoatnoknickers sounds similar to where I live!

Gucci, Golden Goose and Zadig + Voltaire trainers are definitely popular and I’ve previously posted about the JW Anderson mules. If weather is wet then chunky Chelsea boots (khaki or cream) are popular.

Skinnies are out. Wide leg as are in. Leather cropped culottes are definitely having a moment.
@PegasusReturns - I’ve lived and worked in all sorts of wealthy areas but apart from Canada goose and odd logo I couldn’t tell boot brands one from the other though I can maybe tell Joseph clothes and certain shoes/bag trends but mostly if someone points this out to me!

I think Veja trainers are ugly though and soooo many sheep wear them. They’re not comfy either.

TeachesOfPeaches · 30/12/2021 12:53

Julia and Meg have the coolest styles in Motherland. Amanda looks rich and Liz just looks normal.

I have sensitive blue eyes & wear sunglasses in winter particularly driving. I wouldn't class them as part of my outfit though & take them off at the school gate

If the 90s grunge is in and I turn up wearing exactly what I wore in 1996 (band t shirt, German army shirt, tie dye skirt, docs which are all in my loft) would I be cool, or a bit tragic?

snapsieplopp · 30/12/2021 12:55

it's a fine line 😆

IcedAbstinente · 30/12/2021 12:56

I am not good wsith brand but in our school (independent) it tends to be fashion trainers, skinny jeans and oversixed jumpers with puffer jackets. I did see one mum with Gucci trainers like this and I loved them but they are (I assume) outside my price bracket.

I am dumpy and top heavy so I am not setting any trends anywhere. Grin

IggysPop · 30/12/2021 12:56

I love my Veja trainers - great for my wide clown feet. I struggle with most other brands.

@allfurcoatnoknickers - are the Z&V trainers comfortable do you know?

IcedAbstinente · 30/12/2021 12:56

oversized that was.

lollipoprainbow · 30/12/2021 12:57

it's a lighthearted thread. Jeez

Lighthearted? Making people feel shit about not being the coolest mum in the playground.

thebigpurpleone · 30/12/2021 12:58

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping

Yeah, why is it ok to start a thread asking for influencers to follow on Instagram, but not to ask for examples of what you’ve seen people wearing in real life? Can posters really not see beyond the words “school run”? And obviously everyone’s definition of “cool” is going to differ… just answer the question maybe!

I live in a “Sweaty Betty area” Wink so would say SB leggings, expensive puffer coat, generally athleisure. Trainers don’t have to be expensive, I see lots of Nike and Adidas. Probably a nice bag and nice sunglasses but people generally leave their bags in the car when dropping off at nursery! And of course a lot of people on the nursery run are either working (generally me!) or, shock horror, dads Smile

Agree! So much sneering on this thread. If you don't care about fashion why get involved?
SergeiL · 30/12/2021 12:58

What makes a cool mum is a mum who doesn’t judge other women based on what they wear and teaches her daughter/s to also not judge others.

Surely?

mynameiscalypso · 30/12/2021 12:58

@gogohm

Back when I did the school run (9 years ago admittedly) we laughed at the gym gear try hard mums. We all had pt jobs so dropped kids at 8.45, worked until 3 then straight to pick up, we wore work clothes (depending on kind of job of course) - the gym gear mums were the ladies who lunch crowd who ran the pta.
I think WFH has changed this a bit. I'm probably wearing gym-wear 3 days a week when I drop DS off. I also have a busy FT job but as I'm WFH these days, I'll tend to squeeze in a home workout at some point in the morning (plus on zoom nobody gives a shit if I'm wearing leggings or not).
eggsfor1 · 30/12/2021 12:59

@realhousewifeofmodor

Despite what some posters seemed to suggest, veja trainers seem to be part of that uniform.

Add in some sweaty betty leggings, an overrides black puffy coat and some designer sunglasses and you've got yourself a mum uniform.

Agreed!
doorornottodoor · 30/12/2021 12:59

@gogohm hmm - you sound nice Shock

Cheetosyummy · 30/12/2021 13:01

I hope I look somehow I bit cool, two mums on school run always comment on my choice of cloths 😳😳😳I always was very much into style and fashion, also once upon a time I had a fashion blog with about 960 followers ( that’s nothing to compare with today’s Instagram posts etc) when I was younger and probably much cooler.
These days I live in converse and bikers jackets, cool hoodies, skinny jeans forever.
However this is probably the standard so not so cool really.
Follow with interest if can became cooler.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/12/2021 13:01

@snapsieplopp

I agree that wanting to look cool is normal, just that it's not achievable for most & I don't think you can become it later on in life if that makes sense

Looking stylish is much more attainable.

I think this is true, really.

However I guess a few ideas to take one away from the standard uniform (however nice) would be nice..

Popopopo · 30/12/2021 13:02

Our school run is a sea of leggings and ugg boots...pretty sure people are just dressing for comfort and warmth (sensible)

There is one mum I always think looks 'cool' she's usually wearing hush style joggers, a leather jacket and a bandana type head scarf with short bleach blonde hair. Literally everyone else is in leggings. Including me.

CharSiu · 30/12/2021 13:04

I haven’t had to do a school run for a few years but I had to wear a suit for work so didn’t have any of this angst that I didn’t know existed till I read this post.

doorornottodoor · 30/12/2021 13:04

This thread is a bit mean. Maybe because it’s come up in active it’s got more of a AIBU than the usual S&B tone.

Not nice to be sneering at anyone! I’m quite shocked to see the mean girls comments.

In terms of style - it depends if you want to follow the crowd or be cool (in my mind that’s not following the crowd and doing your own thing). Both fine and up to you. Also fine not to be interested in fashion! I’m into it but lots of my friends aren’t. It’s all good.

I wonder if the gym clothes mums laughed at the ones in work wear?

Why is it funny that someone is wearing gym wear? I wear gym clothes on my one day off work on the school run because I then go straight to the gym afterwards. Why would I get dressed twice?
