What do the cool mums wear?

Jacaranda75 · 30/12/2021 10:36

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

Surely sweaty Betty is worn by people on the way to the gym? I'd occasionally wear gym wear to drop off but it'd be if I was going straight to do exercise, rather than as an outfit.

snapsieplopp · 30/12/2021 12:22

New boot styles that are in & wearable are western boots & welly boots. I bought a pair from Zara the other day.

DrJakes · 30/12/2021 12:22

@AuntieDolly

Who do you think is coolest - Amanda or Liz?
Hoping this is a trick question as have been channelling Julia throughout the pandemic, Grin, but if not, Liz obvs.
snapsieplopp · 30/12/2021 12:23

@Haudyourwheesht athleisure wear is a thing, the exercising bit is optional.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 30/12/2021 12:24

Yeah, why is it ok to start a thread asking for influencers to follow on Instagram, but not to ask for examples of what you’ve seen people wearing in real life? Can posters really not see beyond the words “school run”? And obviously everyone’s definition of “cool” is going to differ… just answer the question maybe!

I live in a “Sweaty Betty area” Wink so would say SB leggings, expensive puffer coat, generally athleisure. Trainers don’t have to be expensive, I see lots of Nike and Adidas. Probably a nice bag and nice sunglasses but people generally leave their bags in the car when dropping off at nursery! And of course a lot of people on the nursery run are either working (generally me!) or, shock horror, dads Smile

@Moonface123

The coolest mums are the ones that wear the hell they like, discard the latest fads and couldnt care less about others approval.
Yep.
fitsandgiggles · 30/12/2021 12:25

Whatever the hell I want, it rarely matches, I'd probably not be called a style icon...but, I love it and don't care :-)

Legoninjago1 · 30/12/2021 12:25

What about skinny jeans? I used to live in True Religion but now they only ship from the US it's a real palaver to return them
If they don't fit. I'm in Seven skinny jeans st the mo but find them quite boring.

snapsieplopp · 30/12/2021 12:26

@nanahey agreed, without causing offence a mum on the school run is unlikely to be the epitome of cool. You can look stylish & on trend though although personally I think it's better to deviate a bit from the "uniform" although it's harder these days as there's so much homogeneity in the shops.

Pinkandpink · 30/12/2021 12:26

I just wear my work’s hoodie and jeans lol I don’t think twice about it.

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 30/12/2021 12:28

@crazyjinglist

Surely you just wear whatever you’ve had on for work that day? Do people get changed into clean outfits for the five minutes you spend standing at the school gate?

Confused Not all mothers work. Some work part time. Some wfh.

Ok then, whatever they have worn all day? Same logic applies to not getting changed.

Look at what you have planned for the day and dress accordingly

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 30/12/2021 12:32

I wear whatever is suitable for work that day, so smart casual if in the office and a suit if I'm in court. If I wasn't going to work I'd just wear whatever I was going to wear that day, might be jeans, a dress, leggings, dungarees. Strikes me as odd to plan outfits for something that isn't an occasion

snapsieplopp · 30/12/2021 12:34

@Legoninjago1 skinny jeans aren't the thing any more, flares are apparently very popular with the youth 😱

PegasusReturns · 30/12/2021 12:34

This is another one of those MN myths presumably designed to make people feel that they are seeking something unattainable.

In reality virtually everyone who dresses well (whether cool/stylish/fashionable/whatever) definitely cares; takes time to consider what they buy and how they put it together and enjoys the process.

If you don’t then this thread is probably not for you Hmm

Kitkat151 · 30/12/2021 12:37

@realhousewifeofmodor

Despite what some posters seemed to suggest, veja trainers seem to be part of that uniform.

Add in some sweaty betty leggings, an overrides black puffy coat and some designer sunglasses and you've got yourself a mum uniform.

I would agree with this description ( I pick up my GD twice a week and see this look a lot)
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/12/2021 12:38

Horizontal stripped jumpers/ lots of
Navy’
@Flickflak I think you might have wandered into Style & Beauty by mistake Grin !

As for me, I wear Uniqlo skinny jeans, Air & Grace trainers and a blue Boden woolen coat on the school run. And gold aviators. Looking for some ideas for spring.
You wear sunglasses? In December?

allfurcoatnoknickers · 30/12/2021 12:40

Where I live they wear Gucci, Golden Goose and Zadig + Voltaire trainers and 80s style high waisted jeans. Plus a lot of Acne and Rag and Bone. Sling on a SAM parka and you're there Grin. Lots of Cartier, Hermes, Roxane Assouline and Lele Sadoughi accessories. Dannijo and LoveShackFancy for the more boho types.

That's for the weekend/non office days. In the week it's workwear or scrubs for the medical types.

I live right on the edge of a bonkers expensive area and the people watching is the BEST. Worth the crippling mortgage.

And I haven't even got started on what the kids are wearing...

Ha! I still have all my flare/boot cut jeans somewhere but I'm wed to my skinnies!

According to my child her friends (all primary school age) think I'm one of the coolest mums on the playground.... According to the other parents probably not so much Grin so depends who you are looking to impress I suppose. Alot of the cliquey mums either seem to wear the same black Leggings, long black puffy coats, running trainers and sunglasses (in the middle of winter Hmm) or tailored jeans, woolen coats and ankle boots so I think those two styles must be on trend at the moment.

gogohm · 30/12/2021 12:46

Back when I did the school run (9 years ago admittedly) we laughed at the gym gear try hard mums. We all had pt jobs so dropped kids at 8.45, worked until 3 then straight to pick up, we wore work clothes (depending on kind of job of course) - the gym gear mums were the ladies who lunch crowd who ran the pta.

PegasusReturns · 30/12/2021 12:46

@allfurcoatnoknickers sounds similar to where I live!

Gucci, Golden Goose and Zadig + Voltaire trainers are definitely popular and I’ve previously posted about the JW Anderson mules. If weather is wet then chunky Chelsea boots (khaki or cream) are popular.

Skinnies are out. Wide leg as are in. Leather cropped culottes are definitely having a moment.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 30/12/2021 12:47

Just do what I did, and stop doing the school run the minute the kids got old enough Grin

Haven't seen the school gates since 2019, tis BLISS.

doorornottodoor · 30/12/2021 12:47

Wearsmymoney is cool I think. She’s funny too.
