I just looked up Luca Turin’s review of By the Fireplace. “Ten foot tall Yankee Candle. The stuff of nightmares.” 😂

He’s wrong!

CorneliaStreet · 06/04/2022 19:06
@CorneliaStreet I'm making my way through the Sana Jardin sample set, but nothing has really grabbed me yet. Which, given the price of a full bottle, I'm quite relieved about Grin

I like MMM Sailing Day, and Fireplace has grown on me.

SOTD is Knowing.
That’s my worry too. Ormonde Jayne is crazy prices as well. Perhaps I should stick to Perfume Parlour!

He's wrong about a LOT 🤣
FestivelyScent · 06/04/2022 20:37

@corneliastreet I was looking at an Ormonde Jayne sample set (classic or signature, I think) the other day too! Easter Smile I was so nearly tempted, but decided against it, as the only one I really really want to try is Tolu - which I could get cheaper from either Bloom or Jovoy as a single.

I'm not keen on any of the Issey Miyake type scents, mainly because I can't stand the smell of calone or melon in perfume. In fact, many of the 90s 'fresh' or current 'aquatic' scents give me a headache. I don't even like freebreeze - it has a similarly pervasive melon-aquatic accord.

FestivelyScent · 06/04/2022 20:42

I disagreed with many of the Turin/Sanchez reviews, but did enjoy reading the books and agreed with some bits (although the second wasn't as good as the first imo). They were both very funny and clever. However, I do think they tried a bit too hard, the snarkiness was entertaining, but some of the negative reviews should and could have featured the same level of brilliant elucidation as the positive/meh reviews.

💯 agree!

Glad your mum is making progress ChiswickFlo and good luck with the siblings.
Judystilldreamsofhorses may the perfume goddess restore your senses!
SOTD Shazam it's so cold and wet this evening it feels like winter.

DramaAlpaca · 06/04/2022 22:40

I do enjoy Issey Miyake type scents, but only on the hottest summer day.

I keep my copies of Luca Turin's books to hand, so I can look up whatever I happen to be wearing or considering buying. I don't always agree with him, in fact I usually don't, but he's certainly entertaining.

FestivelyScent · 06/04/2022 23:23

SOTN is By the Fireplace, for warmth. 🔥

@Form1ess It really is cold, I'm absolutely freezing too. The wind is howling away, and we had a full blown hail storm earlier.

In fact, it's so chilly my fingers are absolutely covered in chill blains, and have swollen to the size of sausages, though bizarrely only on my left hand. Sad

@DramaAlpaca I have a copy of both the Turin's on my phone, and regularly refer to them too! They really are packed with information and most definitely useful. Easter Smile

FestivelyScent · 06/04/2022 23:37

"even if I don't agree with everything they say" that was meant to read at the end of my last post. Glitchy phone. Easter Smile

CorneliaStreet · 07/04/2022 07:48

Turin is very funny but he does seems quite biased towards certain perfumers. He definitely likes Christine Nagel, who I think did both of the Jo Malones I like (Wood Sage & Sea Salt and Peony & Blush Suede). She’s also done a rhubarb one for Hermes I really want to try as I love rhubarb. I like the 4160 Rhubarb & Citrus but it has a definite whiff of skunk about it so I would have to be careful where I wore it! The only other rhubarb sample I have is Floral Street Electric Rhubarb, but that is too sweet for me so I am on the hunt.

Just popping my head in the door - I still can’t taste or smell! People who have had Covid, how long has it taken to come back?

Ds2 had it last year (delta) He couldn't taste or smell for 3 weeks (sorry) Apparently high dose vitamin A helps
ChiswickFlo · 07/04/2022 21:04

Mum now needs a USS on her bladder so may not be discharged tomorrow...

Sigh

FestivelyScent · 07/04/2022 23:26

SOTN is pp Ambre Orient.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses sorry to hear your sense of taste and smell hasn't returned. Sad I've also heard that vitamin A is helpful, and zinc supplements are supposed to be useful too.

@ChiswickFlo Hope your mum's bladder ultrasound comes back clear and she can go home soon. Flowers

DramaAlpaca · 08/04/2022 21:48

How's your mum doing @ChiswickFlo?

SOTD Chanel No 19 EDT.

SOTE Guerlain Insolence. An interesting violet/rose/iris concoction which I'm trying to decide how much I like. The bottle is so pretty, violet coloured juice in a traditional Guerlain bottle.

ChiswickFlo · 08/04/2022 21:49

Home today
She's not too bad considering what she's been through
Thanks for asking

FestivelyScent · 08/04/2022 22:54

SOTD was also No19, from a new bottle that arrived yesterday. Easter Smile

I got a quite wonderfully realistic hyacinth note after a few minutes, and after a couple of hours a beautiful perfume-y sort of smell every now and again. After a while this reminded me of the smell of my bag after a day shopping in London or other place with lots of dept stores - the mingled smell of all the perfume tester strips together with the rich dry smell of the leather. I haven't had one of those shopping trips for a very long time, so that was a lovely olfactory memory. Easter Smile

Guerlain Insolence had a sort of waxy note I wasn't too keen on iirc, but after that dissipated I loved the powdery-ness of the violets and iris.

Glad your mum is home and doing better @ChiswickFlo.

FestivelyScent · 08/04/2022 23:27

SOTN is Hypnotic Poison, which smells like candied aniseed and a faint almond-vanilla accord to me. Hmm... I smell like my chemist's (must be the anise), and sugared almonds, and I'm not sure how I feel about that... Easter Confused

One to try again on another day, I think.

DramaAlpaca · 08/04/2022 23:55

Guerlain Insolence had a sort of waxy note

Yes, that's what I'm unsure about, it's sort of a waxy vintage lipsticky note that I can't decide whether I love or hate, but I adore the powderiness.

CorneliaStreet · 09/04/2022 17:05

SOTD Tocca Florence. Gardenia again.
