What do you really wear on Christmas Day?

We always spend Christmas with my sister in law. She’s no fashion slouch, but she’d never wear a velvet trouser suit (I imagine as much as anything else because between cooking and serving Christmas lunch it just wouldn’t be feasible). And yet I’ve just seen one touted in the national press as just the thing to wear for Christmas Day!!! I’m mad about clothes so am not advocating wearing onesies or PJs (although we’re all free to make our own choices) but I was just wondering what people who make Christmas lunch happen by cooking and dishing it up IRL rather than on a fashion page actually wear - and if you do it all super dressed up, respect - and how do you manage it?

A christmas jumper and stretchy leggings Blush

I do enjoy wearing nice dresses and sparkly skirts for all the events in the run up to Christmas, the work do, meet ups with friends etc but Christmas day itself is all about the comfies.

A580Hojas · 18/11/2021 21:09

Slightly smarter version of what I always wear - jeans and a top. Might put a bit of makeup on and some earrings in, but then again I might not.

marsdon · 18/11/2021 21:11

I get dressed up on Christmas Day
When I've had ppl over and cooked Christmas Day i have cooked with a nice dress on I've just put a apron over the top

TheChosenTwo · 18/11/2021 21:11

Leggings and a scraggly tshirt usually! We host for a houseful of 20+, I’m literally on the go all day as we then have another 6 join us in the evening for a buffet and drinks.
I’m wearing something comfortable and practical for being busy and getting covered in food splatters etc.
If I was being a guest elsewhere I’d probably wear a dress and make a bit of an effort Grin

Suzi888 · 18/11/2021 21:13

A Mrs Santa suit (not a sexy one) Grin

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/11/2021 21:16

We’re not hosting this year, and DP does the bulk of the cooking when we do, really. I have worn a gold sequinned midi skirt (a kind of stretchy tube style) with a black jumper for the last few years - same skirt, different jumpers. Black opaque tights and either black Stan Smiths or DM boots.

brambleon · 18/11/2021 21:16

Christmas PJ’s or trousers and a Christmas top

SockFluffInTheBath · 18/11/2021 21:17

Sparkly jumper and nice jeans, add an apron and a ponytail for the cooking.

expatmigrant · 18/11/2021 21:19

Something comfy for opening presents and breakfast. When I'm done with most of the cooking I get dressed up. Velvety combo last year.
If i'm going to somebody else house I really make an effort and get proper dressed up. I am mad about clothes too.

SoMuchToBits · 18/11/2021 21:19

Last year mostly my work uniform ( I was at work from 7 am until 19.30 pm) then whatever I could find to put on after coming home and having a shower. Can't even remember what I put on, was so tired and stressed...

Purpleberet · 18/11/2021 21:20

I always get a Christmas Day outfit. But OH does most of the the cooking Grin if I was cooking id just put an apron on.

Pheasantlysurprised · 18/11/2021 21:21

We are a small family, not many left and I dont have children so it is always fairly low key. We usually either go away to a cottage (myself and DP) or spend with a siblings (parents sadly no longer with us).

So, if just the two of us in a cottage or at home, i honestly wear pyjamas. If visiting or having guests, a comfy dress and wool tights (avec slippers!!). We dont do xmas themed stuff, and unless there's an actual party, no dressing up.

So a sort of 'boring-but-happy' kind of theme.

Blackmagicqueen · 18/11/2021 21:24

Christmas jumper that can be taken off when I get hot or sparkly top and nice leggings with a little jewellery! I like to make a little effort Christmas day but still be comfortable at the same time.

MintyGreenDream · 18/11/2021 21:27

Xmas t shirt and jeggings

PoppyMonth · 18/11/2021 21:27

Something nice. I have a tulle skirt and a jumper from Hush I'm going to wear. I don't do any of the cooking though.

broccolibush · 18/11/2021 21:28

Pyjamas or sports kit. It’s just the two of us and I cba to dress up, and you-must-dress-up-it’s-Christmas is one of the things my family pushed on me and I reject as a result (complicated relationship).

If it’s not raining we get wrapped up and play tennis on the local courts for a while before coming home for lunch. Makes us feel a bit less gluttonous and I love how quiet the park is.

imstilljenny2 · 18/11/2021 21:30

I wear my PJs for as long as possible then go way over the top and change into a fabulous sequin dress or skirt/top combo. I love dressing up on Christmas Day. I usually host but we get all the food from Marks so just bung it all in the oven really and I'm not in a hot kitchen for ages.

MollysDolly · 18/11/2021 21:32

Are you hosting, is the key.

If I was turning up to someone's, with the luxury of Christmas all laid on for me, then I'd look all done and. Hair, makeup, lovely outfit.

I however, host. Parents. Grandparents. DH, teen DC and DTwins aged 2. At what point in the day (between very early influx of DC opening stockings, Christmas breakfast, starting the dinner, family arriving at 10.30, fizz and canapés) I am supposed to have found the time to do my hair nicely and makeup, is beyond me. I'm not getting up at 5am just to do this. I'll still wear something a bit festive, as it takes about the same time to get dressed regardless, maybe a sparkly top, but again, it's more what I'm comfy in and won't roast in, as I hustle and bustle from room to room to kitchen etc. I also think (just personal opinion) that it looks a bit wrong to be wearing something fabulous, with hair quickly (messily) scraped up and no makeup. It just looks a bit odd and half finished.

Boxing Day. That's always hosted by another family member. That's my day to dress up.

MargosKaftan · 18/11/2021 21:33

If we are hosting other people or going elsewhere, then yes I'll dress up, usually a new dress. At home with just the 4 of us, less dressed up. But a lot of those "what to wear on Christmas day" articles cover people who go to church or the pub / a restaurant on Christmas day. As kids we went to church on Christmas morning and yes, everyone was dressed up.

Kite22 · 18/11/2021 21:34

I like to put something a bit smarter on for Christmas day.
I don't go "out out" that much and we can dress very casually for work, so it feels nice to make Christmas day an occasion to put a dress or skirt on.

merryhouse · 18/11/2021 21:34

My favourite dress suitable for both a Feast Day Service and a family party.

Normally somebody else is cooking. However the first year we stayed at home I cooked, dressed up fancy with a full face and dangly earrings.

Hoesbeforebroes · 18/11/2021 21:34

This year I'll be wearing an entirely impractical bright red midi dress with balloon sleeves. And dangly Christmas earrings.

During the worst of the cooking I might change out of it, or wear an apron, or just have another drink and not care. I'll see how I feel on the day!

whattodo2019 · 18/11/2021 21:35

My family are really formal so we wear black tie on Christmas Day when we sit down for a very late lunch.
Earlier in the day it's chinos and shirts for the men and dresses for the women for church. The women out in jeans or similar for the Family walk. Present opening back into dress for drinks and presents.
Late lunch around 4pm ish Black Tie.

Sounds a faff but we love to dress up!!!

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/11/2021 21:35

Yep this.
MargosKaftan · 18/11/2021 21:38

Oh and this year I'm going to wear either red velvet trousers and a white jumper, or black coated skinnies with a brown sparkly jumper. Or a green jumpsuit i saw recently that I might need to treat myself too.
