What age is Seasalt aimed at?

ChampagneWorries · 08/10/2021 21:11

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?
@SirChenjins there are plenty of waterproof coat options which are not anoraks Hmm
Really? Maybe you're defining the word "anorak" differently to me, but I'd disagree.

I live in a northern national park, a wet area of the country. In the winter, I live in walking boots and warm/waterproof gear (anything else would be ridiculous round here tbh). I have never come across a genuinely waterproof coat that isn't something that I'd call an anorak.

There are showerproof fashion coats which look more stylish, but they're not waterproof.

RampantIvy · 09/10/2021 23:07

Can you give some examples of waterproof jackets that aren’t anoraks and that are forward fashion?

What do you wear in wet weather @SirChenjins?

CSJobseeker · 09/10/2021 23:08

(I dont wear Seasalt btw. Not really my thing.)

SirChenjins · 09/10/2021 23:10

@RampantIvy - in wet weather when I need a waterproof coat or jacket I wear an anorak or a parka. What waterproof coat or jacket do you wear in wet weather?

RampantIvy · 09/10/2021 23:13

A properly waterproof anorak from Decathlon. Bought for the inclement weather where I live rather than for its fashion credentials Grin

Pinkplums · 09/10/2021 23:14

I’m 31 and on my 2nd seasalt coat. It’s like a waterproof duvet and fits me beautifully. I love it and don’t give a shit if it’s aimed at me or not Grin

RampantIvy · 09/10/2021 23:16

Something very similar to this

SirChenjins · 09/10/2021 23:22

@RampantIvy

Something very similar to this
So not forward fashion then Grin I used to have one similar to that, it was great for walking in the rain up here. I got a Columbia down filled coat from DH last Christmas - waterproof, warm and with a hood. Definitely not forward fashion either. In lighter rain I have a couple of waterproof anoraks from various places including Seasalt and North Face.
HoneyDewMel · 09/10/2021 23:28

I have to say when I'm battling a hurricane the last thing I care about is what anyone else is wearing let alone what I'm wearing so long as I end up dry

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/10/2021 23:36

Age 50-80, it’s not a fashionable brand at all but the quality is ok.

Doorhandleghost · 10/10/2021 00:59

I love Seasalt but I haven’t bought anything much this season as I think their current colour palette is dreary and frumpy. I tried on one jacket last week and it gave me Waitrose freezer section uniform vibes…..

But generally over the years I find their silhouettes nice and the fit good for me. Fabrics are hit and miss quality wise. Had some a few nice things this summer and last spring.

If you want a properly waterproof coat though - Seasalt is the place to go.

CrispyCold · 10/10/2021 06:39

Anyhow, I ended up buying another similar length rain mac from Uniqlo which I wear regularly and is warm and highly waterproof.

I’d originally bought the Janelle coat from sea salt.

neveradullmoment99 · 10/10/2021 06:52

@AnnieSnap

Like all brands, it’s about your style, not your age. I’m 62 and find most Seasalt stuff doesn’t have any edginess - a bit tame and as a PP said most of the colours are too muted (for me). That said, their coats are fabulous (grey haired model or not 😳), as are their scarves, hats and some knitwear.

Just know your own style/taste and select items from various brands accordingly.

This. Its not the clothes, it's how you style them.
neveradullmoment99 · 10/10/2021 06:55

I wear the sea mirror dress with docs! It's a lively dress.
The problem with some people on here is, they have zero vision with funking things up . The models are styled badly.but if you have any style, you can make some items work.
What a sad ageist thread.
One day you will all be old. So sad the way society views older people.

PattiPritell · 10/10/2021 07:05

Do young people as a whole, say 18-25s, do things that require standing and walking regularly in the rain. Surely theyre at work or jumped on the bus or at college.

Blueberry40 · 10/10/2021 07:05

I would agree with you OP- late 40’s/50’s. I’m 41 and wouldn’t wear one. One of my relatives who is almost 70 has one though.

NotresDames · 10/10/2021 08:13

The perpetually offended on this thread are laughable!

Frumpy is a valid word. It's not ageist. It refers to style- or rather lack of it.

In real life I have never met a single person who would take offence at an outfit being called 'frumpy'. Yet on MN, WW3 breaks out at the mention of the very word.

I think if you can't cope with reading the word frumpy, and get all in a tizzy over it, you don't read the S&B posts.

I wasn't the first or only poster to use it BTW! It crops up in around 50% of the comments here.

On another note, if you want a waterproof jacket, look at some of the outdoor suppliers, like HellyHansen, North Face, even Rab etc.

EllaPaella · 10/10/2021 08:20

@EllaPaella

This model works for Mint Velvet, Jigsaw and always looks stunning. I'd give my right arm to look like her.
@SirChenjins Where did I mention her clothes? 😵‍💫
EllaPaella · 10/10/2021 08:23

It is absolutely ridiculous for someone of 38 to say she wouldn't buy and item if clothing just because someone in their 70's has it.

AmanitaRubescens · 10/10/2021 08:27

Having said that, I find it very frumpy and I am a (young) early 60s, often taken for being 50

No you're not. You're deluding yourself.

The perpetually offended on this thread are laughable

Women calling out ageism isn't aughable, it needs to be done and I'm glad to see more women on here doing it. We are growing older on this forum and refuse to be sidelined or diminished.

BridgetGetTheGin · 10/10/2021 08:28

Never heard of it. I'm 33. Link please?

pictish · 10/10/2021 08:31

Just looked up the meaning of frumpy. It says “dowdy and old-fashioned”.
To my mind, old-fashioned doesn’t equate to ‘clothes that old people wear’ but rather ‘dated and unstylish’.

I don’t think we should do away with ‘frumpy’.

AmanitaRubescens · 10/10/2021 08:34

@BridgetGetTheGin

Never heard of it. I'm 33. Link please?
You're 33 and don't know how to search a fashion company?
pictish · 10/10/2021 08:36

And I’m going to say it, at the the risk of seeming like a braggart…but fuck it, it’s anonymous here…I’m 46 and in my personal opinion, I am more stylish, edgy, well-dressed and modern than many young people I know and see. Some of them are frumpy. Some of them wear dowdy clothing I wouldn’t entertain for a second.

Let’s not make frumpy an age-related thing. It’s not…why start?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/10/2021 08:49

People posting pictures of raincoats - you do know that they are anoraks too, right?

Some people on here are so blinkered. NO item of clothing is in itself frumpy, dowdy, mumsy or whatever other offensive word women shouldn't be using about other women. I don't like many things on the Seasalt site, but that doesn't mean I have to dismiss everything because I'm too blind to see beyond labels stupid women have chosen to give it.

We could take a dress from literally anywhere and get a dozen MNers to style it their way. Their age and the dress will be only part of a much bigger picture.

I'm frankly astonished how stupid some of the comments on here are.
