Beauty Advent Calendars 2021 Thread 3 - Decisions Decisions! (Spoilers included)

Hope it’s ok to have started the thread as we seemed to run out of the last one a bit quickly! And I was really enjoying the thread and reading everyone’s thoughts.

I started reading the first one determined not to buy one this year.

Currently I have the Rituals one and have just ordered the Origins 12 Day one for the 12 days of Christmas!

Let the chat and decisions continue!

Regarding sorting and sorting like others I have my stash sorted into bags of cleansers, toners etc. Now that travel is back on the cards I will use them up that way.

No they wouldn’t. Though I’d just put some of the AA oil straight into my bath, that’s what I do with deep relax!

Stuff that I haven’t used:
Any hand cream and nail products - I rarely use them.
The Elemis body oil - this is solid and melting it before use seems like too much of a faff. I’m lazy as it is when it comes to moisturising my body!
Lipsticks/ glosses that are too dark.
False eyelashes.
Non waterproof mascara
Eyeliners
Acid toners

Though I usually get rid of things straight away if I know I won’t use them - no point in having them hang around.

Is anybody excited about the Liberty advent calendar this year? I was going to treat myself but when I looked at the products, there was nothing much that I felt excited about. Think I'm going to save my money this year but just wondering if some of the products are amazing and I'm missing a trick...

@babysharkdoodoodood Ah, thanks for replying, I don't have a "vertuo" machine, so that makes sense. The calendar looks so fancy, very jealous!

@plantingandpotting

These threads prompted me to look through my stash and see which calendar items are rattling around untouched:

Margaret Dabbs Cuticle Serum Pen (DGAF about my nails)

Surratt Lid Lacquer in a taupe shade (I assume only supermodels look good in brown wet-look eye shadow?!)

Aromatherapy Associates Forest Therapy Bath & Shower Oil, which you're meant to apply before getting in the shower/bath. A hurdle too far, IMO.

...and those strange Dr Sebagh Vit C Powder Cream test tubes.

Out of interest, would any of these count as a good drawer day for any of you?

I’d use most of these!

My drawers of disappointment tend to be
  • nail varnish
  • false lashes
  • liquid eyeliner
  • nude lipsticks
  • body butters
  • tools (brushes/bobbles/rollers/gua shua thingys)
  • neutral eye palettes
  • bronzer
  • dry shampoo

I still buy multiple advents and beauty kits and just gift or sell the bits I don’t like.

I hate tools and lashes, only like decent brushes.

Love make up, fragrance and candles. Skin care I'm just a bit meh about as my skin is a bit fussy. ( bloody menopause!)

@toffeeshock Agreed on the dark lip shades. It's a shame that a deep red is seen as a festive essential.

I'm going to try being better at regifting things I don't like/won't use this year.

@babysharkdoodoodood ...and order complete! Thanks for guiding me through that, I'm not usually so useless at online shopping, I swearGrin

I really liked the AA forest oil from last year's Liberty's. It was a bit of a faff but smelt lovely. I've got loads of masks and toners. I never use the toners and even if I use a mask every week, it still takes ages to get through them.

I'm dithering. I was waiting for Fenwick's but no real stand outs and the blooming pillow spray. I'm not going for Liberty's again so not sure. I'd quite like some perfume but don't think I'd use F&Ms room scents. I think I need a spreadsheet!

@anonomouslyusing Body butters! The sight of a pot of bum bum cream is enough to put me off a calendar now 😂 I don't know why they all keep pushing it so relentlessly during advent. In winter I want to smell of patchouli and pine, not a Pina colada.

@stokey loving the idea of a spreadsheet. One with graphs showing the distribution of haircare/skincare/make up etc...

Opens Excel

@Stokey - I think I need a spreadsheet!

I have one Grin. And it's colour coded with DoDs, "a bit meh" and "yes please" highlighted. I've also totted up the number of certain types of items that I don't want too many of, such as serum, lipstick etc.

I freely admit I am sad but I do like a nice, colour coded spreadsheet.

@plantingandpotting - now I need to add graphs (even though I've pretty much already decided).

So pie chart or bar chart?

Report
plantingandpotting · 08/10/2021 12:51

@ochonagusochonoh chants Pie pie pie pie

Also, which one have you landed on buying?

Thanks for the new thread.

I had sort of decided to go for Liberty this year, on the basis I hadn’t had it before and that I have vouchers to use which reduce the price, but once I saw the contents I changed my mind. Actually more tempted by the Men’s calendar which includes a unisex FM perfume and the Venn all in one concentrate I really like.

Cult Beauty and Harrods are pick of the bunch for me still though, but not getting too excited about CB as it may be as difficult to get as it was last year.

Bum Bum is my favourite thing ever and DS finds the name SOOOOOO FUNNY :)

I'm dithering over Lumene. It's gorgeous of course but I already have full sizes of my two favourite products. And it's 90 quid, which would buy a whole lot of 'bundles' on ebay.

@OchonAgusOchonOh Grin, beats my messy paper lists trying to do the same thing…

Pie it is then Grin

Also, which one have you landed on buying?

I've decided to go with 2 of the upcoming CB boxes and filling an old empty calendar. There was nothing that really excited me that would also ship to the EU so I'm improvising. I did the same last year and it was great. Less choice of beauty edits to choose from this year though because of brexit.

Might get M&S too.

@OchonAgusOchonOh I'm so jealous of your spreadsheet. But interesting that after said data extraction, you've decided not to bother. I'm feeling a bit meh about the whole thing too. Just looked at the JL again and the lipstick colours, 2 toners and yet more pillow spray are all No's for me.

Maybe Selfridge's but I already have a virtually unused Le Labo Santal. It's annoying all the shops seem to put in the same scents.

@Stokey, it’s the Le Labo Santal which put me off Selfridges too. They stock so many interesting perfume brands, you would think they could be more original. I actually really like PdM’s Delina, so the biggest draw for me in the Selfridges calendar was the hand cream; but much cheaper just to buy it if it’s all I want!

Harrods are similarly disappointing on the perfume front. Something like the Thameen perfume in their GWP earlier this year would have been much better than Floral Street.
