Is this coat stylish or dowdy?

Found this coat in a local outdoorsy sort of shop at a bargain price. As well as keeping me dry through the wet winter school runs (we walk in all weathers) I thought it looked quite nice. DH violently disagrees and think it makes me look like I'm 'terribly middle aged' (I'm 40, but perhaps he doesn't like to admit that!).

What's the Mumsnet verdict?

I’m 47, and would say no personally but that’s my opinion. If you like it that’s what matters. I’m still a parka girl lol

TuftyRusty · 05/10/2021 20:24

It might be practical but I personally wouldn’t wear it. I think there are much more stylish waterproof coats out there to be honest!

workshy44 · 05/10/2021 20:24

Something my grandmother would wear - unless you are that age, hard pass from me

waybill · 05/10/2021 20:25

For outdoorsy stuff it's quite cool, I like it.

Beyondword · 05/10/2021 20:26

I'm with your husband on this.

OxanaVorontsova · 05/10/2021 20:28

My mum has similar, she's 80

Theredjellybean · 05/10/2021 20:29

Well I love it

SeanMean · 05/10/2021 20:29

V frumpy, sorry! 😔

tolerable · 05/10/2021 20:30

which colour?

ThankYouDebbie · 05/10/2021 20:31

I'm with him.

pictish · 05/10/2021 20:32

I wouldn't wear it but I can see the angle you're coming from.
Honestly? It looks reasonably stylish on the model but would make most of the s look like Columbo.

Starlightstarbright1 · 05/10/2021 20:33

No its awful imo

EssexLioness · 05/10/2021 20:33

Sorry I agree with your husband. I’m 43 and my nan is in her 90s. She wears a similar coat

Stuckandinamess · 05/10/2021 20:33

Sorry, its a no from me. If the weather is that bad I would rather go a waterproof coat - Berghaus sort of one and some waterproof trousers.

And I say this as a woman who has just been for a walk in exactly that outfit and I am as dry as a boneSmile

Longdistance · 05/10/2021 20:33

That reminds me of Vera.

BiscuitLover09876 · 05/10/2021 20:34

I think if you look like the woman in the photo you can maybe get away with it. Any vaguely normal non model would probably age a lot!

Idontlike · 05/10/2021 20:34

I had one in blue when I was mid 30’s. We had a dog & I thought it would be good in the rain. I didn’t care what I looked like particularly.

In reality the rain ran down the coat, dripped off the ends and made my shins sopping wet! I still kept it for years though ‘just in case’ because I couldn’t bear to send such a little worn expensive coat to the charity shop!

bananaboats · 05/10/2021 20:37

My first thought was also Vera - sorry!

blablablafoghorn · 05/10/2021 20:38

Yeah it's very ageing

bluerecruit · 05/10/2021 20:42

I don't like it at all.

And I'm not remotely stylish, though I'm also a Parka girl.

Get something decent and practical from North Face or Jack Wolfskin it will last you forever and still look reasonable.

BinDayTomorrow · 05/10/2021 20:44

Fastened up it would look different. I think there's better, practical choices to be had

inmyslippers · 05/10/2021 20:47

Looks very practical

DukeofEarlGrey · 05/10/2021 20:47

I think if you are tall, willowy and insouciant you can get away with it... Anything else and it's a tricky one to pull off but I might well take that trade off to stay warm and dry!

gaggiagirl · 05/10/2021 20:48

The queen has one very similar, I'm sure I've seen her photographed on a walk wearing it. If it's good enough for her majesty!

CathyorClaire · 05/10/2021 20:51

I wouldn't wear it and I'm old.

Bear on mind there's usually a reason things are being sold at a bargain price, OP.
