Is this coat stylish or dowdy?

Found this coat in a local outdoorsy sort of shop at a bargain price. As well as keeping me dry through the wet winter school runs (we walk in all weathers) I thought it looked quite nice. DH violently disagrees and think it makes me look like I'm 'terribly middle aged' (I'm 40, but perhaps he doesn't like to admit that!).

What's the Mumsnet verdict?

It's not very nice. It's probably very practical though.

Redcrayons · 05/10/2021 20:54

I wouldn’t wear it, but I don’t have an outdoorsy full length coat kind of lifestyle.

bluerecruit · 05/10/2021 20:57

I also don't think it looks suitable for 'all weathers' it looks flimsy and flappy to me, rubbish for high winds.

MeredithGreyishblue · 05/10/2021 20:59

It's very Duchess of Cornwall

DocAutumn · 05/10/2021 20:59

I really like it! I'm in my early 40s.

Onlinedilema · 05/10/2021 21:05

I think if you wanting a practical coat then it's fine.
You can't be ultra fashionable and warm and fully waterproof and all those things.
What is your husbands style like? Is he a Brad Pitt doppleganger? Or bus had quite plain and ordinary? I'm which case he can hardly call the shots.

Aprilx · 05/10/2021 21:08

I’m 51 and I would not wear it. I don’t think the issue is it looking middle aged and dowdy as such though, I think it is plain horrible and looks like it has been made out of a bit of cheap plastic sheeting. I particularly dislike the half circle feature in the back of the shoulders.

Lweji · 05/10/2021 21:10

It's not stylish, but I'd buy it to get about comfortably in the rain.
Particularly if it involves taking children to school.
It's not a fashion show (for most people).

Kenworthington · 05/10/2021 21:13

I think the olive one is ok but others are awful sorry

PinkSyCo · 05/10/2021 21:13

I am 10 years older than you and I think your DH’s comment is an insult to the middle aged! Saying that, if you like your coat, who cares what he or anyone else thinks of it?

ichundich · 05/10/2021 21:16

It's a bit Vera.

This is cooler

DameMaureen · 05/10/2021 21:17

The blurb that goes with it :

This is a coat that is designed for country pursuits: horse riding, fishing, hunting and the like. We reckon that the vast majority of sales are to dog walkers - those that have to brave the elements (or have the dog go bonkers and wreck the joint)

It's a wannabe country/county look .

MintyGreenDream · 05/10/2021 21:21

Dowdy

CommanderBurnham · 05/10/2021 21:23

I'd make that look frumpy. Depends on your build and style I guess

loafcake · 05/10/2021 21:23

I'm 26 and I really like it 😂 it is super practical too!

I do agree with other people and say you'd have to have the right outfit underneath though or it might come across a little dowdy. I'd wear with skinny jeans and some lace up ankle boots with a nice jumper perhaps.

quinin · 05/10/2021 21:25

I'll go against the grain here. I'm outdoors a lot In all weathers for work, so brought something very similar for practical reasons. Didn't have the shin problem. I was amazed about how many people commented that they liked my coat. Loads of compliments. Slightly baffling but true!

Was 40 when I got it.

Siennabear · 05/10/2021 21:27

I’m 39 and there is no way I would wear that and my taste can be questionable at times.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/10/2021 21:33

Fine for dog walking to keep you dry. Otherwise no.

FlyingDandelions · 05/10/2021 21:39

@Embroidery

That doesn't look at all waterproof and even if it is it has no hood, is really open at neck and bottom so I would get soaked in proper rain!

I'm checking out North Face and Jack Wolfskin but I'm not likely to find anything so affordable (though paying more not to look like Queen and/or Duchess of Cornwall might be worth it!).

bigbeautwoman · 05/10/2021 21:45

Have you looked on eBay? You might find a North Face or Jack Wolfskin coat on there? Just a thought

3luckystars · 05/10/2021 21:47

Stylish on the models.
Real people, especially short ones might not be able to carry it off.

LivesinLondon2000 · 05/10/2021 21:51

No sorry wouldn’t wear it and I’m 43. It’s just a bit old fashioned looking.
For waterproof coats, something like Ilse Jacobsen or Didriksons or similar would be much cooler. They’re expensive but you can get them in the sales sometimes and there’s loads of cheaper versions on the high street.
Or as a pp said try one of the outdoor brands like Jack Wolfskin, Berghaus, North Face too. Also Joules have loads of lovely warm, waterproof coats

wombforanotherone · 05/10/2021 21:55

I think that a 25 year old could wear it and make it current despite it being an old lady coat. A 70 year old could wear it and it would look fine because they're 70. If you're 40 it will just look frumpy
