Is this coat stylish or dowdy?

Found this coat in a local outdoorsy sort of shop at a bargain price. As well as keeping me dry through the wet winter school runs (we walk in all weathers) I thought it looked quite nice. DH violently disagrees and think it makes me look like I'm 'terribly middle aged' (I'm 40, but perhaps he doesn't like to admit that!).

What's the Mumsnet verdict?

I have one of these in navy. Bought for wet Saturday afternoons on school rugby touch lines (quite close to Malvern). Worn with Dubarry boots it’s totally practical and stylish. I wouldn’t wear it for anything other than rugby or dog walking in the rain though.

Alloutofglove · 06/10/2021 19:59

I'm 42 and I'm onto my third (Target Dry) version of this coat in a decade. My then 6yo DD convinced me to buy the first with
"You look like a female Doctor Who should look" I've never found anything better for Dog walking.

Whatsitbeen · 06/10/2021 20:03

It is very frumpy. I do like the purple colour though.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 06/10/2021 20:29

if you like it , it keeps you warm and makes you feel good who cares what dh or anyone else thinks.

Liz1tummypain · 06/10/2021 21:02

Very sensible looking but it wouldn't appeal tome, sorry.

SionnachRua · 06/10/2021 21:18

I think on a leggy supermodel with shiny boots, subtle makeup and artfully tousled hair it'd look stunning. On mere mortals it'll look like a grey sack.

TertiusLydgate · 06/10/2021 21:21

It's really dowdy. Like something the queen would wear with a headscarf.

Miseryisabutterfly · 06/10/2021 22:02

I wasn’t expecting to like it but I do! Although I’m not sure about the lining. It reminds me of Driza-bone coats (which are an Australian institution!), fast becoming cool with Justin O’Shea at the helm.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 06/10/2021 22:55

I think this could be cool, actually, in a retro way. However, I have a Jack Murphy dog-walking parka and a) it stopped being waterproof in its second year and b) it has really short sleeves and I’m only 5 foot 2, so what can they be like on tall people? Hence I’ve decided I need a proper outdoors brand that will last years instead of paying £100 for a coat every couple of years.

NCkitchen · 06/10/2021 23:10

I bought a coat from Jack Murphy and it's terrible. Not waterproof at all, frumpy, bad quality too

liveforsummer · 07/10/2021 07:05

Pretty stylish in the equestrian world with a hat and a pair of country boots however although waterproof, not very warm.

borntobequiet · 07/10/2021 08:13

So much disapproval on here probably means the style will be on every catwalk in the next season or two.

Naaaaah · 07/10/2021 08:18

@Embroidery

That's a totally different style of coat though. It's like someone saying they want some wellies and you suggesting they get flip flops instead.
Naaaaah · 07/10/2021 08:22

@Janaih

My nan would love that. Tbh you'd be dry as fuck in it though so fair play. Rainwear is very rarely "trendy". Which, I'm informed by my dd, is not a cool word.
That coat wouldn't keep you dry. They're horrible coats. They rustle and leak and stick to you and tip water down your legs and make you feel like a boil in the bag cod.
Naaaaah · 07/10/2021 08:25

This is horsey and still not the height of fashion but better than the original one, great price, loads of colours and would defo keep you warm n dry. equidry.co.uk/collections/all-rounder-collection_all

Standrewsschool · 07/10/2021 08:34

I like it. Certain colours I prefer to others. It looks quite thin though, although says it’s waterproof. Good for dog walks etc.

Looks like Vera meets Columbo.

In fairness to the coat it did not rustle and seemed quite breathable. Obviously I didn't get to test it's waterproofness.

Years ago I was given once an awful Peter Storm jacket that was as you describe - so rustly, and instantly made me sweat so much I was wetter than if I hadn't worn anything, so I know the exact thing you mean!

I want to see that show!
Watched a columbo re-run a couple of weeks ago, it was brilliant!

lolliwillowes · 07/10/2021 13:33

Im not sure why we ought to avoid something an 80 yr old would wear - if I reach that age I will be very particular about what I wear, unless I am without choice.

What we need to see are more and more older models - like the ladies at sea salt and white stuff, and perhaps even older. Many of them add such a new dimension to the garments and are a pleasure to look at.

I wanted this coat for a long time but it always buried me at 5'4. It does have the tendency to shine like a bin bag too, sadly. I do love them though (I am 47).

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 07/10/2021 13:42

I’m past 60 and I wouldn’t wear it, personally. I have a bright coloured waterproof trench coat, and a Didrikson’s parka.

QueenBee52 · 07/10/2021 14:05

I have one similar.. I love it ..

but I live rural in west coast Scotland.. wind and rain... beaches and woodland are my haunts with the dog 😂

Nothing I wear is a fashion statement ... 🤣

TheTeaFairy · 07/10/2021 15:21

I have a similar one, from a charity shop.

It keeps me dry (same hatred of wet knees as you, OP), but I can't say I love it. Does the job until I stumble across something better Smile

zukiecat · 07/10/2021 15:37

I'm 54 and I like it, would be perfect for when I'm out with my pagan group.

My only problem would be deciding between Claret, Blackberry or Smoke Blue.

I can't afford those prices anyway, so not likely to be buying one, but if I found it at a cheaper sale price.
