Spotted in M&S yesterday. The pullover alone is a crime against taste, but the overall styling - what were they thinking?!
Am I missing something? Does anyone actually dress like this? (Bar Alice from the Vicar of Dibley!)

It looks like a character in a Barbara Pym novel. And the beanie?

Onlinedilema · 29/09/2021 18:04

I quite like the dress and boots.
I also don't mind the vest but with plain, dark trousers.

ThePlumVan · 29/09/2021 18:09

Someone put that hat on for a joke… surely!

*Goes back to see hat Grin

Groovee · 29/09/2021 18:10

The hat is amazing. The rest is a crime against fashion 😂

Noogar · 29/09/2021 18:11

The hat doesn't even look good on a smooth headed model

Billandben444 · 29/09/2021 19:55

Visual merchandisers? Gosh, I didn't realise this creator had a proper job title.

WhoppingBigBackside · 29/09/2021 20:00

The hat doesn't go but the rest is on trend

Noogar · 29/09/2021 20:01

@WhoppingBigBackside

The hat doesn't go but the rest is on trend
I guess the energy prices are going up
GoWalkabout · 29/09/2021 20:02

I'm so going to put a sweater vest on over my and other stories star print maxi dress now, and dhs red beanie. It actually looks really comfy and like I could muck out the ponies in it (if I had any)

WhoppingBigBackside · 29/09/2021 20:08

Don''t you people keep up with us fashioistas? Tank top over tiered dress in in.

PumpkinCrumble · 29/09/2021 20:11

I kinda like it!

They've just copied photo 3 from here.

Whoever set up the whole AW photoshoot needs the sack IMO. They've tried to out do Zara with the stupid poses.

I did wonder why so many of the photos had models in a Using A She-Wee position. Then I saw the TV ad.

The whole advert has definitely got a Surreptitious Piss at a Literary Festival vibe.

IncessantNameChanger · 29/09/2021 20:17

I have never snorted my tea out my nose at any post on MN. But this is hilarious. I laughed so hard. Thank you op.

Imagine walking into M&s for your staple Jeggings and bras and thinking "wow. I could really turn heads in that outfit?" ...

.... for all the wrong reasons of course 😂

MargaretBall · 29/09/2021 20:21

Tanks over dresses in , but it’s just that tank, that dress, those boots and that hat all together that doesn’t work

fiorentina · 29/09/2021 20:23

I’d wear a similar outfit, I have tank tops and wear them with dresses but that combo isn’t great.

BodgertheJogger · 29/09/2021 20:23

Do they wonder why they have low sales figures??

ScoobyDoobyDooooo · 29/09/2021 21:27

My sister and I always take a photo of the mannequin next to the door in M&S. It's always ridiculous but this takes the biscuit.

Supersimkin2 · 29/09/2021 21:33

I love the whole look - seen it arriving on the London streets and it’s surprisingly flattering to all.

arrangeyourface · 29/09/2021 21:34

Not at all being one to defend M&S generally because they have mainly been awful but some of their autumn stuff is actually not bad this year.

I wore the orange knitted vest being mocked in this post with a cream silk blouse and black wide leg trousers and it actually got compliments, believe it or not!

PurpleDaisies · 29/09/2021 21:36

That tank looks like a hi vis jacket. Extraordinary look that genuinely made me laugh out loud.

nordica · 29/09/2021 22:00

See, I actually don't mind any of the items - I might not buy those exact ones but knitted vests are great (I wouldn't choose a v-neck in that colour personally though), the dress is pretty average but not awful, the boots are everywhere at the moment and it's just a normal beanie hat.

I think it looks a lot worse as the mannequin is grey and has no hair or face, obvs. But I can totally picture that combo looking great on someone on Instagram - long hair, make up, a nice bag, and no one would laugh.

BumblePan · 29/09/2021 22:02

Thanks posting OP! I really needed a laugh tonight

EishetChayil · 29/09/2021 22:16

Looks like Anne from Little Britain.

Scrowy · 29/09/2021 22:32

I spent quite a bit of money in M&S yesterday on some really nice good quality stuff.

I just don't understand why they do stuff like this. It's like self harm.

I used to be a visual merchandiser by trade & I worked for M&S- I can tell you from that very first photo by the OP exactly what is going on in the head of the creative director from that alone. Here goes:
  • “our main customer base is 35-50, female, likes florals” : hence the black & white dress.
  • “we don’t want to alienate young people because we’ve been through that in the last 5-10yrs and need to keep it young at heart & trendy- what would the 35-55yr old core customer buy fir their trendy daughter, probably either late teen or university student? This seasons must-have item: a sleeveless knit.” : cue orange jumper..
  • “it’s transition of seasons time so what can we add with dress & jumper, that also could be bought for youngest teen daughter of vote customer? What are they selling on Boohoo? Chunky beanie hats; straight out of the American Varsity trend bible. Also core customer could wear beanie hat with down jacket to walk dog at weekend? Great!” Cue chunky beanie hat in neutral colour.
  • “Footwear- should we do A) a white trainer (bit too summery? Let’s change for boots 1st September. Could do B) a brown mid heel ankle boot? Great for work looks or lunch with girls. C) worried we are still too middle aged & not cool enough to be featured in Cosmo. Let’s do a chunky military style boot and add some grunge.. feels more runway/editorial to me.. “
…that’s a wrap!!!! 😂😂😂
