I’ve really been wanting one though never owned one before. How do you style yours? Also fake vs real ?

You’ve got to find the right leather jacket you. There are so many different styles. I have a couple, an All Saints one which is edgier and I style it with maxi dresses, knitted dresses etc and a Rick Owens one (absolutely beautiful but a proper investment piece) which I wear with jeans, jumpsuits or trousers. They are both my go to without thinking throw ons. If you get the right jacket for you, you’ll rock it with anything. I couldn’t be without mine!

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/09/2021 11:31

Hell yeah, I love mine. Goes with everything - love mine with dresses, skirts, leggings, trousers…. Buy the best one you can afford and keep it forever. Mine is real but the fake ones can look great too.

MrsMaiselsRedCoat · 26/09/2021 11:36

No, they don't work for me. I tried every style, I mean hundreds over a couple of years as I was convinced by all those articles that say everyone needs a leather jacket in their wardrobe. I bought one eventually, a Rick Owens. But it just didn't look right on me, no matter how I styled it. I'm just not a leather jacket person.

I definitely think you need to try them in person, or be prepared for a lot of returns.

nearlywed21 · 26/09/2021 11:44

Any recommendations for ones where the zips/metalwork is also dark or black rather than silver and shiny ?

Do you mean biker jackets? I loved them and was planning to buy one for my 60th and was so excited when I found one in a charity shop instead. But I ended up redonating. I was really surprised but it felt fussy and busy (even though there wasn't that much hardware compared to some) and I just didn't like it at all. It probably didn't look that bad to an observer but it didn't feel like me - so kind of the opposite of how Remus feels about hers.

So no, I don't think bikers are for everyone. However I've since found a leather blazer (again in a charity shop) which isn't perfect but I feel much better in it so that might just be my next big investment.

I have got a 'vegan' one from EMP atm. It's got a fleecy lining and very nice. Before that I'd had my old one for about 25 years. Do it!

@floisme excuse my ignorance, what is the difference between a biker jacket and a black leather jacket?

Hamster1111 · 26/09/2021 12:12

I love mine. But I bought a cheap fake one first to try for a while, see if I liked it with outfits etc and if I felt comfortable. I loved it and then bought a beautiful real one as I knew I'd wear it.

Cheap ones can be a bit stiff and squeaky (just me?!) but it was worth testing it out for £30 quid before spending £300 on a real one

nearlywed21 · 26/09/2021 12:14

@Hamster1111 where did you get your cheap one from and what style? :)

nearlywed21 biker jacket is the current style: slanted zip, shortish in length and often with extra zips and studs etc - originally worn by 'real' bikers who I imagine are heartily sick of their jackets being appropriated. They've been in fashion for so long it's easy to forget there have ever been anything else but there are other styles too e.g. bombers, blazers and short, single breasted coats. (I've got one of them too.)

I think bikers worked really well with skinny jeans but now there are other styles hitting the high street and I think it's worth having a look at them too if you can.

Hamster1111 · 26/09/2021 12:16

It was from dorothy perkins... I'll see if I can find a similar link (it was years ago now)

QueenBee52 · 26/09/2021 12:20

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

QueenBee52 Don't be so fucking ridiculous.

🤣😂

sorry but its true

Durbeyfield · 26/09/2021 12:23

For me that question is like asking ‘can anyone pull off jeans?” A black leather jacket is such a basic item (I think) that you can style however you want and suits almost everyone. Ive just got a new one from Hobbs and this is probably the fourth I’ve owned. I have bikers in a range of colours, love them.

It's the styling. Biker jackets are a specific thing. Leather jackets come in different styles too though. I've got a black leather oversized bomber jacket which I wear with slouchy things eg oversized jumpers and wide leg trousers. I've also got a fake leather biker jacket in an unusual colour which I wear with everything else eg skinny jeans, dresses, skirts.

MissSmiley · 26/09/2021 12:33

Look on eBay for real leather in a good brand, they come up, Karen Millen so really nice ones

CMOTDibbler · 26/09/2021 12:37

No. For me, the same issue as with denim jackets. No matter how many I try on, my tall, strong shouldered body makes me look like a glam rock band member of the late 80's, or alternatively a russian shot putter of the same era. When, as it happens, I did have a fringed leather jacket which I loved, but it is def not the 'throw it on with anything' garment others describe it as

MummyJ12 · 26/09/2021 12:37

This is Taylor Swift wearing one like mine

QueenBee52 I reckon she looks pretty damn good wearing it!! So I absolutely think people can look good in a black leather jacket 💗

I like Taylor..

but I genuinely loathe leather jackets ... 😩

I'm 39 and short, a stone overweight and look fabulous in a leather jacket.

I just treated myself to the Dalby from All Saints, its going to be my forever jacket. Beautiful soft leather that looks and feels amazing and has that great expensive leather smell. A bit dear but it will last forever.

I went for the dark navy in the end as I liked the slightly 'softer' look over the black.

I have a very dark navy (it was called midnight navy) as well. It looks black most of the time but is slightly warmer and more flattering and since I rarely wear black and wear mainly navy it works for me. Can't wear it with black jeans or black leather shoes or bags though.

nearlywed21 · 26/09/2021 12:44

Thank you all for clarifying. Gosh, just so spoilt for choice! Are there any "cheap" / high street ones you'd recommend for trying it out first?

There's a few on sale in asos too:

Gorgeous jacket magenta82

goose1964 · 26/09/2021 14:10

I can't wear one, I'm busty and short waisted so I have a tendency to look like boobs on legs. A leather jacket reinforces that impression.

Isabelle70 · 26/09/2021 14:18

I would like to try one. I did have a pale pink one years ago but I always looked a bit busty when it was done up. Maybe the idea is to wear them undone?
I would also like one without zips in the sleeves as my arms are short and I would need them to be shortened.
