Dungarees: yes or no?

ShanghaiDiva · 12/09/2021 18:28

Alyson Walsh in the Saturday Telegraph is extolling the virtues of dungarees. So wise mumsnetters should I take the plunge?
Yes or don’t be ridiculous you will look like a toddler...
I am slightly younger than Alison and also have grey hair, if that makes a difference.

Yes! I love dungarees. So practical and comfortable. I would say give them a try and see if they work for you.

IrishMumInLondon2020 · 12/09/2021 18:35

No. Only suitable for toddlers.

DramaAlpaca · 12/09/2021 18:37

A big no from me.

I used to wear them in the late 70s as a skinny teen, but no way would I go there again. Skinny teens and toddlers only.

brittleheadgirl · 12/09/2021 18:38

I'm 50 and have recently bought myself 2 pairs of dungarees. I have had so many compliments from people and even my 16 yr old ds said I looked 'really cool'

More importantly they are super comfy and easy to dress up or down, I bloody love them!

MsWalterMitty · 12/09/2021 18:41

I love the idea them and actually own some lovely Lucy and yak green cord ones.... but! I’m torn my head as I do agree with those who think Big Toddler!! So far I’ve only ever worn them the house as they are so comfortable!

Also, I’m a size 8 with no boobs and in my opinion I think they look better on bigger figures as they just hang off my shoulders

ShanghaiDiva · 12/09/2021 18:41

Opinions spilt so far.
Am not skinny, average build and height.

@IrishMumInLondon2020 and @DramaAlpaca
Ridiculous comments and I feel sad for you (and your friends!)
Women are allowed to wear whatever they want, surely we've moved on from dictating what is 'acceptable' and should be supporting and encouraging one another to wear whatever we love or feel great in?

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 12/09/2021 18:42

I'm 45 5 foot 6 and have several pairs. , size 12/14. Love them and don't care if I look like a kids tv presenter!

I'm the same size as you and actually have a Lucy & Yak pair too! I felt odd wearing them outside the first time, they're so comfy I felt like I had pjs on but so many people commented on how great they looked that I've never looked back. I actually think they look great on all shapes & sizes and are very flattering.
IrishMumInLondon2020 · 12/09/2021 18:46

No need to feel sorry or me or my many friends @brittleheadgirl Hmm The OP asked for opinions and I’m quite happy to share mine. Halo

ImInStealthMode · 12/09/2021 18:47

I'm 37 and have bought 2 pairs in the last year; one plain black denim and the other mint green shorty ones for summer. Love them both and couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks of them. Do and wear what makes you happy OP Smile

nellly · 12/09/2021 18:48

It's a no from me purely because I think jumpsuits and dungarees make toilet visits too stressful Grin

Howshouldibehave · 12/09/2021 18:49

I have Lucy and Yak pinafore dresses-I feel that they suit me much more as a short person than dungarees but think they look fab on other people!

MsWalterMitty · 12/09/2021 18:51

@brittleheadgirl

Yeah I think my actually worry is that other people will think i look like a toddler 🙈

But yes they’re so comfy it would feel like wearing pjs outside 🤣

Frazzledd · 12/09/2021 18:52

Ooo, interesting! I'm eyeing up some black ones atm, saw someone wearing a pair teamed with a short sleeved white top and white trainers and looked really smart.

God but I really do! Thank goodness for my open minded, supportive friends (who don't have the attitude of someone from 50 years ago) But I imagine you've found your tribe, so I guess we're all happy Grin
KirstenBlest · 12/09/2021 18:52

Alyson Walsh does middle-aged dressing well.

I'm in my 50s and wear dungarees a lot - very bright print baggy ones, body skimming denim ones, cord ones. I have greying hair.

I probably look more 'Barbara Good's maiden aunt' than 'oversized toddler'

highwoodwitch · 12/09/2021 18:53

I love them and I am old! I love denim but jeans are so uncomfortable.
Dungarees are great and who cares what anyone thinks as long as you like them.
Next have a good selection. Worth a try.

Howshouldibehave · 12/09/2021 18:55

They look excellent wear for gardening, I always think!

KirstenBlest · 12/09/2021 18:56

I get lots of compliments too. I've even had a young shop assistant ask me where I got a particularly bright pair from

I am shortish and towards the lower end of normal on the BMI scale.if that helps

annacondom · 12/09/2021 18:59

Yes, I.bought some recently and I really love them (black denim but not terribly thick). I'm old enough to remember Dexy's Midnight Runners and my bf and I having matching denim dungarees! So they take me to a happy place and I love them. Mine are quite slim, more like fitted jeans with a bib than looking like a babygro. So it's worth looking at the silhouette before buying.

KirstenBlest · 12/09/2021 18:59

The loose Lucy& Yak ones are great, you just slip straps off your shoulders to go to the loo, and pull them back up when you're done.
NoYOUbekind · 12/09/2021 19:01

My NDN is in her 70s and she wears dungarees - and looks absolutely fantastic in them. I always have a wee smile when I walk past her washing line, she has loads of them in different colours. It's going to the loo that puts me off to be honest.

YvesEveEave · 12/09/2021 19:02

I've got some shorty ones. Probably won't wear them through winter though. I've seen people wearing them with tights, but not sure I can pull it off.

I've had a couple of pairs of L&Y ones over the years. Much as I love them, they have to really be styled well, not just chucked on, for them to work ,(on me this is). I found them weirdly high maintenance for this reason.

That said, there are so many about and I've seen women of all sizes looking amazing in them.

I did see a young woman yesterday walking along in London, with her friend. She had on, printed, oversize, puffy dungarees, bright converse and her hair in bunches. She was very petite and her friend was tall. I legitimately thought they were mother and daughter till I saw them up close! So yes, if you go for the whole toddler look, you can, well, end up looking a lot like a child.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 12/09/2021 19:02

I have some light cotton ones from Kit & Kaboodle which I love.

The dungaree bits aren't metal clasps, you just tie a knot in the end of the straps once you've fed them through the holes.

They're very baggy, soft and slouchy
