anyone else still prefer skinny/slim fit jeans?

Or is it just moi? Grin

Im not too arsed with trends, but at 5'4 and slender I look like a chump in wide/mom/ even straight jeans. If slimmer jeans vanished off the market I'd probably just wear skirts.
We are all different so I know we all suit a variety of styles, but im wondering if there are more of us who still prefer a skinnier fit. This thread is for us!

Also would love to hear how you plan to 'update' the slimmer leg look this winter! Anyone have tips on how theyre making their skinnies stay 'current'?

I'll definitely still wear my skinnies. Bootcut/flared jeans look so dated imo.

MilduraS · 19/09/2021 23:35

It took me ages to finally get out of my bootcuts and brave skinny jeans. Now I can't imagine wearing anything else. I'm sad that 90s mum jeans are back in style. Currently rewatching Friends and even the flawless Jennifer Anniston doesn't look good in them.

ZednotZee · 19/09/2021 23:38

According to my teenage DD they are a 'flex'

Ie; supposed to look shit on 99%of the population.

@TheWindow

Slim fit (not skinny) blue jeans or black skinnies til I die!

I don’t care if they’re not ‘on trend’. I’m in my 40s, I know what suits my shape, and I look ridiculous in loose or flared styles. Even straight jeans just remind me of 501s the first time around. No.

I’m a teen of the 90s, so I just cannot wear the 90s-inspired looks that the bright young things are wearing now. It would just be sad.

Argh! 501s, I never got the appeal. They gave everyone a square bum.
ellyeth · 20/09/2021 00:31

Yes, I do. I'm short and I don't think wide trousers are flattering. I did buy one pair this summer, thinking they were cooler and healthier when it is hot, but I never actually got round to wearing them.

Pheasantlysurprised · 20/09/2021 02:56

I love how people keep saying boot cut and flares make them look better - they are the exact same fit as slim fit jeans apart from a wider ankle. This wont affect anything from the calf upwards.

But I am sure the MN 'expert' who will tell us slimmer fit jeans are not a classic will be along to order us all into submission soon, because theyre... expert after all.

ShrikeAttack · 20/09/2021 04:13

I think you may be talking bonkers @Pheasantlysurprised.

Nobody says that.

Monty27 · 20/09/2021 05:28

I've had to leave my skinnies in the drawer while I lose my lockdown midriff
I'm wearing anything but for now
Not to say I won't be wearing them again I've nothing against them personally 😂

groovergirl · 20/09/2021 07:14

The really interesting things are happening in the way older people are dressing.

Oh, yes, this. Here in Australia, Sarah Jane Adams is the current alt-style icon, and she's in her 60s. I also like Iris Apfel, who is almost 100 and wears slim-cut jeans.

As for skinny jeans, I've never seen anyone who looks as good in them as my neighbour -- and she's in her 80s. Body type and personality are more important than age when it comes to jeans ... or any other clothes, really.

EllaPaella · 20/09/2021 07:38

@brokenbiscuitsx

I love this silhouette, a shirt like that just doesn’t work with baggy jeans IMO.
I agree, a slimmer leg jean or trousers lends itself well to a baggy or oversized top. Wide legs need a neater fitting top to balance them out, that's why I can't see myself wearing them - I don't want to wear tops that are too tight over my tummy and I would also have to invest in a whole load more winter knitwear as nearly all my jumpers are looser fit.
MsTSwift · 20/09/2021 08:07

Yeah you were quite rude about older women wearing non tight jeans (46 love my bubble jeans but have young teen girls who love fashion so have had to up my game!)

lindyloo57 · 20/09/2021 08:53

@ZednotZee I'm your shape but petite 5ft2 and have just brought some bootcuts which balance me out much better than skinnies, I will still wear skinnies now and then but definitely prefer the bootcuts.

lndnbrdge91 · 20/09/2021 08:57

I won't be giving up my skinny jeans but as per the previous for me at 5"2 bootcuts are can be flattering. I just struggle wearing them because I was there in the 90s so if anything it makes me feel old Smile

myfacelookslikeatoe · 20/09/2021 09:38

Bootcut for me..

Ohhh baby baby ohhhhh

But seriously I look awful in skinnies as my legs are like windy pipe cleaners so straight cut or wide (not the les battersby jeans)

MrsMaizel · 20/09/2021 10:06

It's very odd that all these tiny young girls are going about swathed in acres of cloth right now - the big baggy tracksuit bottoms eg . This is the age when you can flaunt it . I look back lovingly at my 19 year old self in photos and tight flares . As regards the jeans you should wear what you suit and is flattering to you . For me this is slim/skinny depending on the brand . My favourites are Levis shaping slim .

MsTSwift · 20/09/2021 10:09

If you are 19 and slim you look good in anything though 😁

MrsMaizel · 20/09/2021 10:16

No I don't think you do but I understand that part of the tracksuit bottom thing is to give a big arse where one doesn't necessarily exist .
StarlightLady · 20/09/2021 10:37

As much as l love fashion, l am still the boss and l won’t give in to wearing something that l feel is not right for me.

Although it would great party fun to step into a pair of jeans with someone else, it is not for me.

Neither do l want jeans that come so far up to my bra that wearing a top is almost superfluous.

boogiewithasuitcase · 20/09/2021 11:24

Yes. I am short and look boxy with any bulkiness around my waist and hips. Maybe one day I will find the right fit of Mom jeans but I didn't look great in them the first time around!

Pheasantlysurprised · 20/09/2021 12:16

slimmer fit jeans make me look taller - wider fit and even straight leg make me look a bit shorter and wider. Not that there's much wrong with looking short, or wide, but hey ho!

Pheasantlysurprised · 20/09/2021 12:19

@ShrikeAttack

I think you may be talking bonkers *@Pheasantlysurprised*.

Nobody says that.

oh yes they did, on nearly every skinny jeans thread posted on here in recent months. Not only a self proclaimed expert, but a crew of sycophantic nodding donkeys in agreement.

'apparently' the rest of us are just slow to catch on, we are fooling ourselves with outdated perceptions of a non-classic silhouette!

Bonkers is a silly word, perhaps express yourself more clearly and we could better understand each other. I don't take this so terribly seriously, do you?

LimpLettice · 20/09/2021 15:54

Also me! I keep posting on these threads as a die hard skinnies wearer. Diastasis, lost 1.5 stone since May, been pregnant or horribly fat for 3 years. I'm short, hourglass with a 5 month pouch. Tight or cropped tops are just horrible on my stomach, and longer line or loose fit tops look ridiculous with acres of leg fabric. So there it is. I shall have to be the 20twenties equivalent of the blue rinse, high pencilled eyebrow, polyester slacked older ladies of my youth. It's either that or I spend my forties looking like Andy Pandy. I may be horribly dated and past it, but at least I won't look like a Weeble.

AuntieStella · 20/09/2021 16:05

I'm nowhere near skinny enough to wear jeans with extra fabric!

Skinnies all the way - not the ultra squeezey type, just something that follows the normal leg silhouette. It looks terribly sturdy to add fabric in places where the outline should be less wide, and I'm just not willowy enough to carry off looking like tree-trunks on my lower half. If you're tall and have willowy thighs you might pull it off though

DrCoconut · 20/09/2021 16:15

Bootcut looks awful on me. As do wide legs. I'm short and plumper than I should be and having big baggy trousers flapping about is not a good look. I have no plans to abandon skinny jeans.

BitterTits · 20/09/2021 16:16

I'm really pleased that skinnies are dead. My legs look like sausages in them.
