anyone else still prefer skinny/slim fit jeans?

Or is it just moi? Grin

Im not too arsed with trends, but at 5'4 and slender I look like a chump in wide/mom/ even straight jeans. If slimmer jeans vanished off the market I'd probably just wear skirts.
We are all different so I know we all suit a variety of styles, but im wondering if there are more of us who still prefer a skinnier fit. This thread is for us!

Also would love to hear how you plan to 'update' the slimmer leg look this winter! Anyone have tips on how theyre making their skinnies stay 'current'?

I find skinnies not as flattering as wide leg or flared styles. I'm big busted and skinny jeans just emphasize how big my too half looks compared to my bottom half. Wider leg balances me out

lolliwillowes · 11/09/2021 19:40

What intrigues me is how so many people say we are just not used to picturing a different silhouette, and that eventually we will 'get it', as if we are somewhat slow Grin

im pretty ok with adapting to new ideas and styles, I notice them and absorb them when they appeal to me, but I can't be arsed wearing stuff that makes me look like crap for the sake of trends. There's a lot of middle aged women on here way too wrapped up in what schoolgirls are wearing. I guess I don't want to ape teen fashions now, in the same way I didnt want to look like a 'scene' kid when I was 30.

I can relate to why many people love high waisted mom jeans though, even though they look dreadful on me.

I know what you mean - proportions are a thing! This is why trends are tricky, they only ever cater to a few of us at any give point.

I am really short and size 8 but not particularly skinny, with no waist (small bust, thick waist, smallish hips) Wide legs make me look square. Cropped wide trousers are horrendous for me.

BippityBoppity87 · 11/09/2021 19:59

@Almostwelsh I understand what you mean. I think if you have quite a lose v-neck style top on, it can kind of balance you out a bit more and draw the eye downwards. I have quite a large chest, and I've noticed if I wear skinny trousers with a slim fit cotton scoop neck top, for example, it just them look like Miss Trunchbull bigger, which isn't the look I'm going for----

Ipanemama · 11/09/2021 20:03

Moi aussi! I’ll never give them up Smile

Lifeisawillow · 11/09/2021 20:05

I like slim, straight and boyfriend jeans. I never really got on with skinny jeans as my calves are quite muscular so I gave up on them a few years ago. I've tried bootleg but I just feel dated in them.

I loathe mom jeans, they're hideously unflattering on everyone, I think people will look back on them in a few years and shudder.

Almostwelsh · 11/09/2021 20:10

Yeah, mom jeans are no good if you're actually a mum!

But wide legs and flares look good on older women if they have the right body type. (All those women who have not been flattered by the skinnies trend)

BrilloPaddy · 11/09/2021 20:14

I bought some wide leg cropped Levi's last week. DH took about 20 minutes to stop laughing Hmm

Skinnies all the way here.

lolliwillowes · 11/09/2021 20:16

flares on older women always remind me of Rachel Zoe!
this is not a bad thing, just a ...thing.

ShrikeAttack · 12/09/2021 00:39

I think you're being a bit ageist and dismissive of older women in your desire to wear skinny jeans @lolliwillowes, I'm very keen on people wearing exactly as they please. Want to wear skinnies? Wear skinnies!

You don't have to accuse middle-aged women of 'being overly invested in what teenagers wear' to justify your choice, or talk about 'older women in flares'. The vast majority of high end clothing is bought by 'older' & 'middle-aged' women, they have the cash to do so and the confidence of their choices. They're certainly not influenced by what teenagers are wearing.

Teens are certainly about fashion 'churn', fast fashion and new looks, but that's top down these days. Very few designers now look to the youth and underground for inspiration. There is no underground anymore. The really interesting things are happening in the way older people are dressing.

So wear your skinnies and enjoy them, fill your boots, but don't make it an age thing.

bridgeofslides · 12/09/2021 00:42

I'm wearing skinny jeans. I think mum jeans and all that tack are very unflattering. Why would you want to look like that?

Bobsyer · 12/09/2021 00:46

I'm too fat at the moment but I love my skinnies. I dislike how wider trousers and jeans are more likely to drag on the ground.

I do like high waisted boyfriend style - but again, too fat at the moment Grin

Once I've dropped a few pounds I will be putting my skinny jeans and biker boots back on, I aspire to look like I'm off to fight in a zombie apocalypse - of the bad ass style rather than covered in blood and brains style!

ShrikeAttack · 12/09/2021 01:05

Why would I want to look like what @bridgeofslides? A woman wearing different clothes to you?

ShrikeAttack · 12/09/2021 01:09

And what's with a the 'dragging on the ground'? Do people not buy clothes that fit? Jeans are available in different lengths.

Jeans didn't drag on the ground in the 70s, or the 40s. It was a very late 90s early 00s the too long jeans thing. It's not an inevitable and perennial style with non-skinny trousers.

Bobsyer · 12/09/2021 01:14

Well if I buy a pair of bootcut jeans that fit on the length for heels then they'll be too long for trainers. And vice versa. And I don't want to have to buy multiple pairs of the same jeans and have them hemmed.

I think it was probably much easier and more expected that you would hem your own clothing 50+ years ago. Plus jeans in the 40s at least were likely to be turned up.

MrsMaizel · 12/09/2021 01:14

Jeans did go down to the ground in the 1970s .

TreeSmuggler · 12/09/2021 01:17

What intrigues me is how so many people say we are just not used to picturing a different silhouette, and that eventually we will 'get it', as if we are somewhat slow

I think there is something in this though and it's not about being slow. I know I was probably the last person to stop wearing boot cuts as to me skinnies looked awful and felt uncomfortable. Of course now I think the same about boot cuts! So uncomfortable with all that extra fabric and my calves feel unsupported Grin.

I compromise and wear slim straight at the moment, I think slim straight and straight are so timeless they look normal in any era.

bridgeofslides · 12/09/2021 01:26

@ShrikeAttack

Why would I want to look like what *@bridgeofslides*? A woman wearing different clothes to you?
Unflattering. Mum jeans are unflattering on everyone IMO. Whereas though I don't like them, bootcut can be really flattering.
Bobsyer · 12/09/2021 01:31

Key words there though @bridgeofslides are 'in your opinion'.

ShrikeAttack · 12/09/2021 01:33

OK

We all have different ideas of what looks good.

And that's brilliant. What's not so brilliant is ascribing it to age.

Women of every age can look stupendous.

Or bland.

It's not age related.

lolliwillowes · 12/09/2021 02:22

Not sure how observing trends on MN relates to agism, but consider my naughty little wrist well and truly slapped!

Im sure many here have noticed a lot of talk in recent months about millennial and zoomers and skinny jeans. I wont be the first to have read statements about skinnies being 'out' because their teenage daughter said so. Other than that I havent even mentioned older women in a negative way, so dial in the police work, it's tedious.

I have definitely noticed S&B becoming more like AIBU recently. It's like a fucking minefield in here. If someone suggests a preference for something they're torn a new arsehole. Sad really, it used to be a great, more lighthearted section.

OP posts:
ShrikeAttack · 12/09/2021 02:34

@lolliwillowes I've not torn you anything.

Stop being so silly.

RIPIgglePiggle · 12/09/2021 03:31

I like the comfort and more casual style of the mom jeans but I’m 5’4 too and baggy jeans drown me.

Stradivarius slim fit mom jeans are perfect for me, feels more current but so much more flattering. Not sure you could tuck them into a long boot but I’m planning on wearing ankle boots with mine in winter. There’s loads of slim fit mom styles out there and I think it can sometimes take a bit of looking to find some that suit and fit you well but these are great IMO. I think ASOS do a version too
