anyone else still prefer skinny/slim fit jeans?

Or is it just moi? Grin

Im not too arsed with trends, but at 5'4 and slender I look like a chump in wide/mom/ even straight jeans. If slimmer jeans vanished off the market I'd probably just wear skirts.
We are all different so I know we all suit a variety of styles, but im wondering if there are more of us who still prefer a skinnier fit. This thread is for us!

Also would love to hear how you plan to 'update' the slimmer leg look this winter! Anyone have tips on how theyre making their skinnies stay 'current'?

Surely skinnies are a classic now, not a trend.

They are far too useful to go away.

Sittinginthesand · 12/09/2021 07:54

Fizzboss - I’m exactly the same shape as you! In some clothes I can look quite decent - slim and neat, in others I look stumpy and matronly. I have found some joules slightly looser fit jeans that look a bit more modern without making me look stumpy - what trousers are you wearing - I love my navy skinnies still! Just above the knee pencil skirts suit me but they are hard to find atm.

sanityisamyth · 12/09/2021 07:56

Nope. Bootcut for me. I don't have slim/skinny legs!!

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 12/09/2021 08:03

Almost no one is slim enough with a pert enough butt to look good in skinny jeans. For every one person who rocks them, I see a hundred that look awful. Which is how I look in them. Bloody awful.

That said I absolutely adore the fact that all these women have higher self-esteem than I do and I am immensely jealous. I'm working on it.

ShrikeAttack · 12/09/2021 08:34

I'm not sure @Greencharge, people on this board speak about 'how will we get dressed without them' in horror. Which is fine, I do believe women should wear what they please.

I don't own a pair of skinnies though, so it is entirely possible to build a very stylish wardrobe that doesn't include a pair of skinny jeans. They didn't even exist for about 20,000 years of human history so I'm sure people will be fine without them.

This sort of talk reminds me of an argument I use to have with and ex-boyfriend many years ago who was quite convinced that every possible human thought had ever been thought and would not accept the counter-argument that I couldn't give him one. When the only answer is, 'I dunno', just because you have difficulty conceiving it doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

Cakeandslippers · 12/09/2021 08:37

I'm always so confused about jeans. Don't think any styles actually suit me. I have got quite chunky legs in comparison to my body which means no jeans really fit. I find skinnys really tight and uncomfortable and mom jeans don't have that baggy look they are meant to (also can't stand cold ankles). I have no idea what the difference is between slim and skinny, they all the look same to me when I try them on.

I'd kill for a pair of actually comfortable jeans that I could comfortably sit down / crouch down in but aren't so big that they fall down.

nearlywed21 · 12/09/2021 09:03

Me too!

But out of interest can anyone link me to these newer trendy jeans that everyone is wearing please?
(As I’m not sure I’m buying the right thing, looked hideous on me and returned immediately)

FizzyDibdab · 12/09/2021 09:03

I'm short so baggy clothes swamp me or make me look as wide as a bus even though I'm a size 10. So I wear relaxed fit skinnies or slim legs rolled up.

Coffeepot72 · 12/09/2021 10:05

I am a walking parsnip so I never wore skinnies unless it was with a very long top. I will be staying with slim fit jeans. But I am also interested in boot cuts too, can we wear those this autumn/winter? And if so, what would I wear on my feet?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 12/09/2021 11:43

Me! Slim and 5ft 3ins tall. I don't do 'volume' anywhere, and loathe anything high waisted as I find it so uncomfortable. All the shops I've been in recently and had lots of skinnies and slim leg jeans - 'fashion' may say they're out but I've seen lots of people wearing them 🤷🏼‍♀️

Boots!

Just bought some new black skinny jeans from m&s this weekend. I'm a size 12 and 5' 10". I normally wear straight legs which suit me in warmer weather with slides/converse. But skinny's just work better in autumn and winter with my jumper and ankle boot uniform. And who gives an af about trends anymore???? Not I Smile

EllaPaella · 13/09/2021 19:14

I will definitely still be wearing my skinny jeans this winter. Both black and grey ones with my DM's and oversized baggy chunky knit jumpers. And I have a pair of skinny coated jeans that I will be wearing.
That said I do also love my Mom and boyfriend jeans.
I am not a fan of the new fad for flares though.. I've tried them and they are too reminiscent of the 90's (my teenage years). I don't like the look of them with trainers, it just feels like a very dated look to me. Maybe I will feel different when everyone starts to wear them again (which they inevitably will) and I get used to that look again - I just think that wide legs need a very neat or cropped top, they don't look good with the majority of warm winter knitwear imo.

TeaAddict235 · 13/09/2021 20:06

I'll still be wearing my slim and skinnies this autumn & winter. They suit my figure and I used to find them easy to style for work (with shirts/ jumpers/ jackets etc) as well as for casual.
I don't particularly like wide cropped (ankle swingers??) trousers as they make me look shorter than I am. Mum jeans do no favours for anyone with an athletic backside, what a waste of a hide IMO. And I don't find them very versatile apart from for casual wearing. And I am yet to find a good pair of boyfriend / girlfriend jeans.

kennycat · 19/09/2021 22:21

It took me ages to feel ok wearing skinnies and now I wouldn't wear anything else! I ahve some that are allegedly skinny from Next and they are anything but. They are very baggy around the calf and would look stupid tucked in to knee high boots. Which means I only have one pair of jeans for the winter when I live in my Fly boots.

brokenbiscuitsx · 19/09/2021 22:53

@Fluffycloudland77

I’m the same as you op, baggy stuff makes me look big. I’m still in mid-rise skinny jeans.

Dh saw some youngsters wearing baggy jeans and said they look awful, why are they wearing 90’s stuff. If you’ve never seen those styles before I suppose they look very new and different.

I agree, these baggy bootcut or wide leg jeans (usually frayed hems dragging on the floor) and oversized baggy sweatshirts etc just looks scruffy and dated to me not current or fresh at all (maybe it’s because I wore it the first time around)

ZednotZee · 19/09/2021 22:55

The mom jeans suit me, but I have an unusual shape.

5'9 with very long, slim legs, short torso, broad shoulders, large breasts.

The baggier jeans balance me out in a way skinnier never did.

brokenbiscuitsx · 19/09/2021 22:58

I love this silhouette, a shirt like that just doesn’t work with baggy jeans IMO.

TakeMe2Insanity · 19/09/2021 22:59

I’m a lot bigger than I was when I last regularly wore boot cut/wide trousers and frankly they don’t look as flattering as they used to.

SecretKeeper1 · 19/09/2021 23:10

I’ve just bought bootcuts, I think they look best with a tshirt / fitted top and trainers. I do feel a bit studenty though Hmm so not sure if I look the today equivalent of ‘ageing hippie’. Will be back in my faithful skinnies as soon as boot season happens.

Zenithbear · 19/09/2021 23:15

Me. I only have skinny jeans. I'm slim with toned long legs. I love them and they look good on me. I get the super skinny ones and expect them to be that.
I'm a bit rock chicky and have a motorbike and these baggy jeans just aren't me.

Titsywoo · 19/09/2021 23:16

I bought some slim flare jeans last week and wore them this weekend. They suit me SO much better than skinnies and I'm very glad there is now a better selection of non skinny jeans available.

Titsywoo · 19/09/2021 23:19

My dd wears wide leg and mom jeans and looks great. She tends to wear them with fitted crop tops. I like that fashion is changing again in a bigge4 way as it seemed a bit stuck for 10 years or so.

Fattedthesecond · 19/09/2021 23:19

@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels

Mumsnet threads have been declaring skinnies as dated and out of fashion since 2012! yet River Island, Primark etc are full of them and in fact in my local store that is all you can buy. I don’t know why some people on here are so desperate to declare skinnies as dated, thread after thread, yet here we are in 2021 and skinnies are still holding strong.
Are river island and primary high end fashion now?
Ikeameatballs · 19/09/2021 23:25

My dd wears wide leg jeans and looks really good in them. She’s got an amazing bum and wears jeans which really fit and flatter her bum whilst being quite baggy through the legs. One pair I’ve noticed is slightly too big on her waist, the jeans sort of stand proud of her. She wears these with a crop top and it makes her waist look tiny, when really it’s a normal size 10.
