Knee length skirt with knee length boots

Is this a dated look? I believe is what suits me best. I am short and curvy, and midi/maxi skirts don't look right on me. I am 50 and won't wear a mini skirt. Anyone seen plain black knee length skirts? Admittedly, what's knee length for me is probably short for most women...

It's not dated it's classic. Yes it has 70s overtones but in the best possible way! I love a midi skirt...cut on the bias and with knee high boots.

Darklane · 18/08/2021 12:29

What shape do you want?
This is a nice pencil skirt though I got one in Asda of all places for £8!
pencil

This is in the sale!
skirt

I’m 5’1” short, size 14 hourglass shape so know what you mean. Midi length makes me look like I’ve been hammered into the ground.

MrsFionaCharming · 18/08/2021 12:33

I think if the skirt is long enough to tough the top of the boots then it’s fine. If the skirt hits at the top of the knee and the boots just under then it’s quite dated.

SummaLuvin · 18/08/2021 12:36

I think it is dated and dowdy personally.

Mini skirts - over the knee boots, knee length boots, or ankle boots.
Knee length skirts look - ankle boots.
Midi/maxi skirts - knee length boots or ankle boots

This has made me laugh so much!! I know exactly what you mean. I am the same height, size 10 from the waist up, size 12 from the waist down. I don't think I want a pencil skirt, I want to feel comfortable if I have to sit on the floor (this can happen).

I think if the style suits you you can just update it slightly with the boots style IYKWIM. Classic black skirt (I saw a few in the charity shop this week) and then boots with a lower chunky heel maybe?

You are 50 and won't wear a mini skirt. Why? because you are 50?

Knee length skirt with knee high boots probably will make you look 50 if that is what you want

dressupinyou · 18/08/2021 13:03

I think knee length/over the knee boots all look really dated now. I know lots of people like and wear them but I hate them.

Ankle boots look great.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 18/08/2021 13:39

I have not worn a mini skirt in my life because they don't suit me, not because I'm 50.

I cannot pull off the dress/skirt with ankle boot look, it just doesn't suit me.

Sorry but that is what you said OP

It depends upon you and your body and what looks right.

For me the knee boot and skirt thing is a no because it looks so seventies and old ladyish, but then that is me.
Try a midi skirt with the boots - actually with any boots and see.

Darklane · 18/08/2021 14:19

That John Lewis skirt is lovely
Just me I know, but ankle boots with long or midi skirts always look like they’ve come off the set of some Victorian period costume drama.
.
I envy you being able to sit & get up off the floor Smile .....joint problems Confused

DGFB · 18/08/2021 14:33

Really dated. Knee length skirt and Chelsea boots would look better

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 18/08/2021 15:15

Ankle boots with skirts make your legs look stumpy (unless you're tall and thin). You may look fashionable, but you'll also look stumpy. I think knee-high boots are the most flattering length.

Floisme · 18/08/2021 15:28

Almost-old lady here. Admittedly I don't wear skirts very often but I reverted to knee boots - with either midi or on-the-knee hemline - a couple of years ago, when I needed new boots and realised I was bored with ankle high (and fed up with the opaque tights that bobbled after a couple of washes). I'm happy I switched back.

Midi/maxi skirts - knee length boots or ankle boots

Agreed - whoever I've seen wearing this in the past few years they haven't stopped and looked very dated.

I'm lucky - I have worn ankle boots with a teeny heel from Top Shop and wear with skirts or dresses and I'm only 5ft5 but don't look stumpy. Have longish legs though.
Ozanj · 18/08/2021 15:42

Mini skirt with black tights and knee length or ankle boots would look nicer

lindyloo57 · 18/08/2021 16:38

I prefer knee high boots or calf length with midis or maxis, love ancle boots on others with a shorter skirt but because I have short legs, if I wear a knee length skirt,(which I never do) with ancle boots I look stumpy as my legs are short from knee to ancle. I don't wear a mini skirt now I am 61 today, mind you on my short legs they are only two or three inches above my knees. I have three winter minis left which keep surviving the cull, If I don't wear them this winter they be past on in the spring

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2021 16:44

Oh ffs. Wear what you like OP, if you like it and it suits you.

This shit on here about things being 'old lady-ish' and dowdy makes my blood boil.

Very slightly over the knee or just on the knee with a small gap between the top of the boots will be fine. Honestly it will. It's a look that lots of people wear in Autumn/Winter whatever the fucking fashion police on here think.

A skirt and boots won't make you look 50. Being 50 is what makes you look 50.

JurassicPark101 · 18/08/2021 16:49

Knee length boots paired with a knee length skirt is pretty much impossible to look anything other than a pensioner. Do you define any skirt as even slightly above the knee as being a mini skirt? Even if it’s just slightly above the knee the look is salvageable.

SummaLuvin · 18/08/2021 16:55

This shit makes my blood boil.

OP has asked in a style forum if something looks dated, presumably because she wishes to avoid looking older than her years and cares about looking somewhat stylish, so is using mumsnet to garner a range of objective opinions. Of course she can wear what she wants and if she feels most comfortable in the knee boots then go ahead. I wouldn't judge someone for it or mock them in anyway (which I think is why people get so defensive) but this is the style board and this is my honest opinion on the aesthetic.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 18/08/2021 16:59

Wear what suits you!

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 18/08/2021 17:06

Thanks everyone. I don't want to look younger. I just want to look good.
Ankle boots with skirts don't look good on me, so I won't be wearing that.
Mini skirts (anything showing the knee or above) don't look good on me, so I won't be wearing them.
I quite like the 70s vibe look. I just need to find a suitable skirt and boots.

It’s hard

I used to live that look (knee length skirt snd knee high boots) but it now feels old hat/not right

Midi skirts look awful on me

So, aged 50, I have started wearing mini skirts with knee highs (and polo neck) like I did in the 90s (which was based on the 60s Grin)

OR midi length with ankle boots

I love knee lengths skirts but they feel so out now Sad so am giving them a break for a few years

Fashion woes Grin … when you are old enough to know what suits you, and fashion dictates that what you like is old hat Hmm

You have to choose to just stick with your own style maybe?

MaMelon · 18/08/2021 17:23

I’m 52, short, size 10/12, and also look shit in skirts and ankle boots unless they have a chunky heel and are tight right my skinny ankles - flat ankle boots that are too wide for my ankles look rubbish on me, like I’m wearing waste paper baskets on my feet.

I have a pair of seventies style high heeled boots and I wear them with a pencil skirt and a blouse in a soft material with either a couple of buttons undone or a blouse with a tie neck but left loose. I think I look pretty good and that’s all that I care about. It’s one of the great joys of being this age.
